A new question, is their any down load site where movies with ATMOS are available? I heard ATMOS for the first time yesterday and must say it sounds mighty good.

You can download demo clips here: http://www.demo-world.eu/2d-demo-trailers-hd/

If you mean streaming full movies, Vudu: https://www.watchvudu.com/uhd/

OK I found the problem.

The unit is working correctly. When you change inputs, the MX 160 puts a message on your screen indicating the video scale, OF THE INPUT, not the output. This was very confusing to me.
I thought that was what the MX 160 was sending down stream. My error. I've set the unit for preferred 2160 and indeed that is what I am getting. I had to go to the TV information window to prove it but all was OK.

On the Web browser, the MX 160, unlike the audio side where you get the ...incoming and outgoing audio report, on the video side you only get the incoming video so this too was confusing. I thought, like the audio side, you'd see beneath the OUT video resolution, this is not what the web browser does, only input.

So with all that confusion cleaned up, the MX 160 is operating properly.

With the update firmware 3.0.0, the McIntosh MX160 is now a very fine, if not the best, audio video processor.

Since moving up from a consumer grade surround processor (Marantz) to more of a boutique brand (Lyngdorf) I have found that the users on average are more passionate about music and more experienced. It got me wondering... who is the youngest MX160 owner (or MP-50 owner) who participates in this thread? The oldest? Anyone willing to reveal their age and take the bragging rights?

I am 43

Just 10 years ago, I was still using the Pioneer Elite VSX35TX that I had bought 20 years ago. 5 years ago, because the Pioneer didn't have the HDMI inputs, I bought the Marantz SR7007, and to me, it was a big jump. 2 years ago, when the manager of the audio store where I visited once every few months showed me the Datasat RS20i, I laughed out loud! Someone must be crazy to buy such a processor. He agreed that 20K was indeed too much and suggested me to try the brand new McIntosh MX160. I thought, "Well, it's cheaper than the Datasat, but it's still 10 times of what I paid for the Marantz." But only 5 minutes after he started the movie "Transformers: Age of Extintction", I changed my mind.

By the way, I am 64.

47 over here.
Went from Denon in my 20's, to a Fosgate, early 30's, to Theta Casa Nova, then MX 121, to the 160 right when it came out.

Optometrist....5 years out! 5 years ago I went into magnolia wanting to buy a Def Tech home theater in a box and I left with a very basic Denon receiver and satellite speakers. I ended up upgrading exponentially to what I have now. I love learning about this stuff and can’t wait to see how I can improve my system going forward.

Haha! I’m fairly content with where I am at but I’m just trying to maximize what I have! Next week I’m going to try and fine tune the subs and get those integrated better! Until we buy a new home I am limited by the space we have and can’t put a legit theater room in. The space we have now for the theater works well but nothing like everyone on this forum has! You guys have amazing setups!! When we decide to have a child we may have the option to get a larger home and the theater room is something I will seek out down the road!

dts remapping

I am assuming we are supposed to have remapping engaged for dts x and neural x, but it affects all other modes as well, on my unit anyway.
Kinda confused.

So, while I have always enjoyed the higher end stuff. After reading this forum its like latin. I couldn't agree more with one of the posts above, folks here are very knowledgable about this equpment far beyond what I know. I'd appreciate a little vocabulary if some one is willing. What the heck is MQA? And I've seen several other abbreviations I didn't understand. I do understand UHD HDR Dolby vision...get it got it. I'm more interested in the others. I do know what Atmos is and Auro, just a pair of decoding types. But that MQA what the heck is that?

Im probably the oldest, just turned 65 in September. I was a cinema projectionist from the age of 16 and stayed in the industry for over 35+ years working in all the top theatres in Auckland then Sydney. Screened my last 35MM film at the age of 45 and never showed another film after that, the industry had changed to something I no longer liked. Started an AV company at the age of 50 and sold it a couple of years ago. Even with some of the quirks we have endured with the 160 its still the best ever processer I have ever own, and there has been plenty! Im sure this will be in my hands for a very long time...

Sorry, Murray, you can't claim the title of oldest - I turned 69 two weeks ago. I have owned the following McIntosh preamp/processors starting in 1994: MX130, MX132, MX134, MX135, MX120, MX121, MX122, and 2 MX160's. The MX160's are in the theater rooms in my Austin and Houston houses, and the MX122 is in the den system in my Houston house. The MX160's are my favorites of all of these.

Murray, I doubt you are the oldest. I do know you were instrumental in convincing me to give the MP-50 a shot. I think you may be one of the few using the full monty, all 16 outputs. You have a true home cinema. I can barely call mine a media room in comparison.

Edit: Boom! As I was typing, 69 years young! 31 is this biggest shocker to me. Maybe I should have put up a prize?

I turned 51 in September. First movie capable system was a Fischer 2 channel stereo to HT speakers via aux in my teens, then Sansui AVR, then Denon 5600, Lexicon MC12B, MX151, and now MX160. Just old enough to see the birth of home theater then THX era to present. Greatly enjoyed watching home theater tech evolve.

Tidal finally released an Apple TV app last week. I think that its quality is better than Apple Music, however, it still is not as good as high resolution audio files. I normally use my Oppo for high resolution audio files.

I'm 38, and I live in San Jose, CA. I have a Marantz 7010 and an Integra 80.2 in other rooms. I briefly bought an Anthem AVM60, but I returned it after a week because I really disliked its room correction. That was when I decided to save up for the MX160, and I'm completely happy with its sound.

Does anyone remember when Star Wars was shown on broadcast TV? Early 80s? I remember it being simulcast on FM radio so we could hear the audio in stereo. That is my first memory of anything resembling home theater.

I setup Dolby Pro-Logic in the 90s, never found it satisfying. I never experienced a 5.1 laserdisc setup.

I still remember when DVD was first released and I heard my first 5.1 setup at Circuit City. It was my first wow experience and really the gateway to this hobby. When I graduated in '98 5.1 and a 60" RPTV (480i) was my first expenditure.

You always can check the newest version using MX160 control center on a web browser. Mine still shows 2.0.14.
Arnie, Joe is an MX160 update firmware Beta user. His knowledge and experiences about movie theater sound as well as the MX160 are beyond ours. Had something been wrong with the firmware, he would have already reported to the McIntosh technical team. I trust Joe and am not even waiting for an official copy of the update firmware. It happened before when he sent me the 2.0.13-21 firmware that later released officially by McInotsh in version 2.0.14. both versions were identical. Just go ahead and install the firmware Joe sent us and enjoy your movies. You won't be disappointed it.
