Once it’️s off and been red light for a few minutes, remove usb and power up. Will take about 15 minutes, so don’️t disrupt it. Hope it works alright.
That’️s slightly different than normal protocol. Is that because the file is mislabeled or merely because Sony tech finds this way more reliable?
I think tech fellow was being over cautious with cut and paste vs staging or copying. I don’t think mislabeled file was an actual problem since we got it to work without renaming. It was a usb drive issue. It was formatting it with dual petition for some strange reason. Second drive was broken and third time a charm.

My 2 cents...I've tried with random movies; I find Digital Focus renders a too grainy image and ruins the film-like look of 5000ES. I definitely turn it Off.
As regards Iris, I still can't see any difference and so I'll wait for the enhanced users comment.

Exclamation Projector with three blinking red lights status post FW update

A bit worried here:

Just updated to the 4.801 FW for my VW5000ES. Install was flawless. However, the projector now shuts down within 2-3 minutes of the laser being lit (HDMI-2 - AppleTV - Lumagen - MX160) and gives three blinking red lights. Behavior continues to repeat.

What the heck could be going on? Any advice would be appreciated. Planning to watch a movie with the family tonight, but this has me a bit worried. Not finding great troubleshooting advice elsewhere.

Not sure if you’ve tried already but the couple of times I’ve had weird behavior I’ve unplugged waited a minute or two and plugged back in. Did the trick for me. I wouldn’t do that in the middle of a FW install but it sounds like that process completed fine.

Unfortunately it’s not changing the behavior after unplug + plug. It just quits. Image is perfect. No warning. Just goes dead and keeps blinking red 3x

8.102 Update

Not having any luck getting this to install. Projector just turns on normally. I have tried 2 different usb drives, reformatted each (to FAT32), downloaded the file several times (from the US site and UK site). No go. I have done this several times before with no problems. Just copy the folder with the bin file to the root of the usb and voila!. I have seen mention of a mis-named folder but have also seen posts of success. Going to quit for now as I don't want to keep turning my projector off and on repeatedly.

I had the same experience. Called Sony this morning, and after going through the obvious, the tech gave me a different number to call Monday. His only unusual instruction was to unplug the projector before putting in the flash drive, but that didn’t produce a different result. If you come up with a solution, please let me know. Thanks.

I know it shouldn’t matter but I’ve never had luck updating with a Mac. My main computer is a Mac. All my personal devices are Apple. Could never get the updates to perform properly with it for the 5000 and various other components I have. I have a cheap Windows laptop that basically I only use for AV/electronics gear. I’ve never had a problem with anything since.

According to the service manual there are three different meanings to three flashes.

Only 'On/Standby' blinking red:
DC power & memory error. The DC power (3.3 V, 1.8 V, 1.0 V and 5.0 V) output
on the QA board is abnormal, or the memory
(NAND) access failure has occurred.

'On/Standby fully lit, 'Warning' blinking red:
Laser error. The laser does not light up normally.

Both lights blinking red:
Fan error. Any of fan does not operate normally.

Maybe trying the update again is worth a shot?
You gave to wait until the PJ clicks the power relay, after the update has finished before you remove the stick, in case you didn't quite leave it long enough before?

8.102 is NOT the correct version number. That is the 760 firmware version. 4.801 is the newest 5000 F/W.

Use a windows formatted USB stick for the update files too.

The iris should now close then open at power on and the close then open again at power off.

If this is happening on your unit, then it should be working correctly with content.

Quick observations on new firmware:

Black/shadow detail notably improved -
HDR significantly improved despite lack of dynamic/frame by frame mapping -
So far I like Digital Focus - sort of Darbee for 4k, but subtle and calm. I haven't watched grainy-film based material yet however. But on modern, digitally shot films, quite good
Banding significantly reduced.

More viewing required, hopefully tonight and tomorrow. But, overall a fantastic upgrade. I'm still nudging to get dynamic tone mapping added - perhaps next go round...

This behavior is not, (as far as I can determine), documented for the 5000... curious where you got that?

Thanks

Thanks. Only standby is blinking. I waited 10+ minutes after FW update before removing the stick. Actually left the room.

4.801 confirmed on the info/menu screen.

Not sure why DC power would suddenly be different - no changes on that front.

NAND failure is a fearful concept. Unsure if any DIY fixes can make this better before movie night. Getting a Sony tech out here also seems like a major PITA and on a “who knows when” timeline unless someone knows who to contact to bypass limited knowledge call center folks...

The behaviour is not documented anywhere, but it is from observed behaviour of 760s and 870s.

Hmm. That is what it says on the US 5000ES download site. Well, I think I'll hold off for a while and see if any solutions arise.

Hello thrang, have you seen improvements with HDR handled by SONY or Radiance? I've been feeding my SONY with SDR/DTM from Radiance.

The text on the site is wrong, but if you download the file it indicates 4801 in the filename

Success! Apparently a Mac can't be involved at any step of the process. I dug out an old Intel NUC and formatted the usb drive on that but still copied the file the the usb on the Mac...no go. So I connected my NUC to the internet and did the whole thing via that and it is updating as I type. I guess I'll have to keep at least 1 windows pc around for emergencies!

The to way to tell is if anyone has noticed the iris cycling at power on and power off before the update. The 760 iris would cycle before the DCC was enabled.
I would be surprised if the 5000 was any different in that regard.
It is of course possible that it isn't though.

Thanks for the input on Macs. I went out and bought a cheap Windows laptop and updated the projector without any problem. The advice above about waiting a few minutes after the light turns red before removing the flash drive is well taken. The light turned solid red, but the update apparently wasn’t finished. Less than a minute later, the light started blinking again, first green and then orange, before the update apparently completed.

How do you know when the firmware has been fully installed? Is there any light indicator that is completed or do you simply wait 15/20 minutes before powering on?

Funny, I have have used a Mac with a Windows emulator program (Parallels) for years and I finally bought a true Windows laptop a month ago for all my theater / automation gear - mainly Lutron lighting software. Far less headaches. Mac and Parallels works nice but it is not perfect.

I'll have to update my 5000 now...

Goodbye to a great audio and video genius and writer... JOHN GANNON. I enjoyed your friendship, wit and a nice long run we took around Indianapolis at CEDIA years back... and for buying my Runco 980 Ultra years back... you saved my ass! Rest in peace.

HDR Contrast/Bridhtness Settings are now independent of SDR

I noticed after the firmware 4.801 update, HDR settings for brightness, contrast, laser level etc... are independent from the SDR settings. I only use the Reference mode settings which were professionally calibrated with SDR 4K video. I normally have my laser power set to 20. After the update I noticed the fan spooled up when I switched to an HDR video. The fan normally spools up if the laser setting is above 50. After further inspection I found the contrast, brightness laser level and other settings were at factory default (laser 80, contrast 50). So now you can independently set contrast and brightness for HDR and SDR on the modes!

I updated both projectors in the South suburbs (Chicago) stacked-pair to 4.801 yesterday. No issues whatsoever. Looking forward to doing a full recalibration before Thanksgiving.

That was a concern clearly emphasized by Sony tech. Leave the pj on red light for at least 10 minutes to make sure it isn’t mid-way through install and appears complete. Removing usb before it is loaded entirely is problematic. Once usb is removed, takes another bit of installation time when powered up.
