mike lavigne,

Mike that was a very nice and Super informative post you took the time to share with us.
Especially to us that have or will have the RS4500.
The thing to me that actually made the most impact was JVC and of course Chris Deering.
Chris did his thing and JVC did their thing as a Manufacturer and that's all anyone can truly want or expect.

Thanks again for sharing your RS4500 personal experience.
Lastly IMO you were really so fortunate to have Chris readily available to assist you that's for sure.
UN-Fortunately for a guy like me I Do-Not have anyone close by to assist in that sort of matter.

Terry

I wouldn’t say the “only” game in town for high power, quality laser. You’d be shocked at what you get with the BenQ LK970 and also most likely the upcoming LK990. The price you can get the LK970 at makes it an absolute steal for the quality of laser image you get. I’m stunned every time I turn it on.

Of course if your budget is much higher for the likes of the RS4500 (if it’s bright enough) or VW5000ES, then you’ll certainly get that extra bit of native contrast performance.

I know you're clearly excited to get your new toy Terry, I get exactly the same, but posting copies of your purchase and shipping documentation, especially with your own address included, on a public forum, might not be the best idea.

Wow! Yeah!

Not really a good idea in this day and age, if ever it was!!

Congrats on the JVC though!

Every RS4500 sold needs an authorization form filled out that goes to JVC. So anyone that had a question when buying one could just ask JVC. They know the history of each projector - it's called a serial number. JVC can tell you how many hours are on each b stock projector too. There aren't that many b stock RS4500's to begin with.

Here's the explanation - all the RS4500's come from JVC on the pallet. When re-shipping by a dealer, some shippers like UPS ( who do take items over 70 lbs. - I stand corrected ) don't want it shipped on a pallet. Those projectors get put into a 2nd box instead. Those that go freight carrier stay on the pallet. And now you know !

That does not explain why mine had no pallet. It was NOT shipped via UPS (shipped via a freight carrier - R&L) and AVS was the dealer. Nor was there as second box.

Broken.. I had intermittent issues from the get-go and now they are permanent. SDR/HDR auto selection does not work. All HDR images are a complete mess. I had some kind of hard failure so the PJ just quit and a solid red and blinking red light showed up. I un-plugged and restarted and the HDR issue became permanent.

Working with JVC and AVS to get a replacement.

NOT a happy camper. Such a pain to have to take it down, remove the A Lens, pack it up and re-ship it and then re-do it all with a replacement. And, be without the ability to watch HDR in the meantime.

Stuff happens and fortunately it is within the AVS return policy.

Sorry buddy about your troubles with the RS4500.

Crap does happen sometimes but like you posted it is a time consuming thing to change them out.
In my case I don't have your talent so my AV Dealer is doing mine for me.
I wouldn't even have a clue as to where to start to do something like installing it.

They will be here Monday morning to start doing my remake on the HT.

sorry to read this, but i just went through this same process and came out the other side very happy. bought a 'B' stock unit, had to send it in for repair, and got it back after repair. missed it for 2+ weeks.

i can totally relate to the effort related to taking down a 90 pound RS4500 + A lens.

hang in there. it will be worth it.

Thanks. I would hope that if I am shipping this back to JVC, they would provide me a pallet. The box I received it in (no outer box) is not fit for ensuring undamaged shipment. We shall see. AVS is a great company as is JVC and I have no doubt they will do the right thing to get this mess resolved with the least inconvenience to me.

if they are planning on repairing it, likely they will send a plastic case used for shipping to shows. it is padded and ultra protective, in my opinion beyond any pallet. if it's a return and replacement, that is different.

What I don’t understand is why these B-stocks are having issues?

If anything, I would expect better luck with a B-stock unit! I can easily understand how a brand new unit that has never been looked at before, could easily have a problem.

But with a B-stock, that has been returned to JVC, checked by JVC, then shipped to AVS and checked by AVS, then to a second customer, I would fully expect these units to be rock solid.

So either these units are being damaged in shipping, which I can certainly understand if they are being shipped via standard UPS or FedEX instead of freight, or they aren’t getting the full QC needed.

I agree with your assessment that a B-Stock should have a higher statistical chance of being a solid product. Which is why I thought it a great deal to purchase a B-Stock.

BUT...Unless the freight company removed the box from a pallet, mine was not shipped on one nor was it a box within a box. For a product of this cost, weight and "fragility" I was more than surprised. And who knows how is was handled (or mis-handled) during shipment. I will insist the replacement be shipped on a pallet.

@ccool96 Your theater is beautiful. VERY nice!! Well done!!

Thank you! I just finished a theater at a home we built as a weekend get-a-way. We built a smallish farm style house on a large piece of property. I didn’t have the 13’ ceiling heights to work with like I did at my main residence. The new theater only had a 9’ ceiling to work with, but I have a 17’ wide Stewart Vistascope 2-way masking screen that basically goes from wall to wall / floor to ceiling.

I know this RS4500 issue is frustrating now, but I know once you get past that hurdle, you will be thrilled with the new projector. I hope you are able to get back up and running quickly.

Here are a couple pictures of my new room. Hope you get a chance to post pictures once you get your new setup complete!

Congrats on a such a lovely theatre build, it's awesome!!! 17' wide huge screen, and you have rs4500? And is that enough with lumens wise to cover that big screen?

I am using a Sony 5000ES on this 17’ wide screen. I used an RS4500 for a while on my 14’ wide screen at my other house. It threw a great image, but it could only give me about 26fL with the iris fully open and max laser power. It just didn’t quite give me as much headroom as I desired for HDR, so I ultimately ended up back with 5000ES projectors for both.

But the new RS2000 and RS3000 have peaked my interest as a replacement for my RS600, which I use on a 120” diagonal screen in my bedroom. I had considered moving to a B-stock 4500 as a replace my for my RS600, but it’s still quite a bit more than I want to spend for my bedroom projector. I have pre-ordered both a new RS2000 and RS3000 to evaluate and play with. If either of those can offer a picture even close to the RS4500, which all reviews seem to point towards, then I think they really will be the best bang per buck of all the new projectors this year.

And hopefully the huge increase in the native contrast of the new JVC 4K chips will force Sony into working on newer 4K chips as well. They basically offer the same 4K chips today as they did when I got my first VW1000 almost 10 years ago. Time for Sony to really step up it’s game.

I thought so that you must of be running something like 5000es for that big screen. Yeah Sony should step up in the game and do better.

Don't see this happening. JVC's awesome 1080p contrast didnt cause Sony to improve their relatively crappy contrast on their 1080p projectors.

Video: JVC RS4500 135" screen in pure black room no light, htpc nvidia 1080ti.

That maybe the case, but hope not. Sony did do a lot of work in dynamic irises back when JVC didn’t offer any. And they were basically 10 years ahead of JVC in offering true 4K chips.

I hope now that they have strong competition in the native 4K arena, they will refocus their efforts back on increasing either native contrast or their dynamic laser dimming capabilities.

I expect we will quickly see their laser based lineup grow and become more affordable. They need to be at lest working on their dynamic laser dimming capability or even the new dual contrast - laser dimming / dynamic iris combo.

At the same time, I hope to see JVC working hard to offer significantly brighter projectors. This is one of the biggest limitations to their lineup. They don’t currently offer anything remotely close to the output of the Sony 5000ES.

Did you do the build out of these two (or, I guess 3) theaters or did you design them and have them built by a contractor? I don't know what you do for a living but given your sense of style, I would hope home theater design is at least an active hobby. My wife loves the look of your theaters!
