More light, yes, but the Thor offers so much more PQ. There isn't anything that approaches it right now.

The price difference is hugely significant at almost triple the retail cost of a pair of 5000s. But the Thor PQ is a huge technological leap forward. I didn't think we'd see this level of image perfection so soon. It's an enormous step up, not just from the 5000 but from anything else out there, including Barco's own lesser products.

I can't think of any A-V device where the law diminishing returns does not apply...except this one. In the case of the Thor, the performance leap is greater than the price jump.

Just my 34,995,000 cents, though.
Paul,
I've seen the Thor in action and ,although it certainly has it's advantages, it has disadvantages. I disagree frankly with your assessment; the sequential contrast difference (perhaps a quarter that produced by the Sony) is gigantic. Not to mention that the fill factor isn't what I would have thought and thus close viewing distance is more of an issue than expected. It is buggy with software we nuts would be using it with so this must be considered as well. I had thought that the MTF and ANSI performance would have wowed me but looking at the same software on my Sony the next day convinced me otherwise.

I could live with the size, noise, installation headaches and price but.....

I will say that on something the size of Wolfgang's screen it is still the choice but in say 15' -18' range I'm confident that it is not clear cut but more of picking your preferences.

So dual Sony 5000s are about $120,000 that means the Thor is $360,000?

If so go back in time when Chris Carter and Tom Jackson were ESPN Monday Night Countdown. Are there yet in your mind?

Simple. 350 Gs for a home theater pj. Holy Cow (Harry Carey).

However after taking some time to reflect I bet Barco would ship you one for $250-270,000

Not bad if you say it fast.

I remember Scott Wilkinson mentioning that the black levels were not the best. I've never seen the Thor in action, so I can't speak to it one way or the other. Anyone else able to comment?

What do you consider good? IIRC with some mods it is supposed to be getting around 5k to 1 on/off cr.

Having fun playing the new mobile game Volley Village

Hmm, for around $300K, it's gotta be as good as the Christie Dolby projectors. I wouldn't expect OLED black levels since that's a completely different technology.

Barco Thor

Unfortunately the contrast mods developed for Barco Xenon based units, which has been proven to take DCI units to 9-10k:1 just don’t work with the Thor.

With the Thor, if you try to push contrast above 5-6k:1 uniformity is wrecked.

I think real world HC mods for the Thor were topping out around 4K:1 with reasonable uniformity.

I was wondering how much it'd cost just to buy one of the flagship laser projectors, either the LHC or L series. Thor is pretty much a dimmer and less powerful version of the flagship laser projectors made for commercial cinema, right?

No difference. They just give the Barco Residential units catchy names.

The Thor is identical to the DP4K-20LHC.

Barco Thor

Also last time I checked Barco’s Post Production software was still not compatible with the new Alchemy unit. And without this software you have to ability to modify any picture settings without an outboard video processor like the Lumagen.

I wonder if there's any reason to get the DP4K-40LHC if you had the money, as I'm sure it'd be more expensive to buy and operate. I mean...your screen would have to be huge, or you want ridiculous brightness with 38,000 lumens instead of 17,000.

Hello,

It is my understanding that the laser's don't perform well if you reduce the light output to below twenty percent. The light output for a 16's screen is at between 25-30%.

@ccool96 no opportunity to correct the uniformity with Spatial Color Calibration?Equal to the HC 20L, but that starts out as the 30L?Jerry, the Dolby's would be 1.3 not 0.3, of course you'll get two of those, if they were accepting your order.
