I have tried a lot of different settings and invested quite some time to get out the best of it and to understand it better.

First I got really nice results with just giving out SDR/2020 to the VW760 (set to gamma 2.4 and BT2020). This is an easy and good way for sure. Of course it is essential that the gamma is indeed 2.4 (and the projector calibrated).

Finally I found that to give out HDR/BT2020 with the HDR display set to middle or high Luminance LCD (1000 Nits) with adjusting the contrast slider at the Sony such that clipping is at 1000 nits gave me the best resuts.

Here are some of my more detailed Panasonic settings (in case you are interested). Of course I am not saying that these are the best for everybody since tonemapping is not standardized and always some kind of compromize is involved since our projectors can not deliver the brightness the standard asks for.

Since I have 200 nits on screen available for HDR I wanted particularly to find the "correct" setting for the Dynamic Range Adjustment. Based on the info of Kris Deering setting -12 is 1000 nits, 0 is 350 nits, 12 is 100 nits and the measurents of my own I have concluded that 1 unit is about 55 Nits for values from -12 up to 5. This suggeted that I should go rather into the minus direction. -3 looked actually pretty good. However I am prefering 0 for 1000 nits titels and +1 or +2 for 4000 Nits titels. I do get more brightness without getting the subjective impression of loosing contrast. This gives IMO more depth to the image. So I have found that for 1000 Nits titels everything set to 0 with HDR Optimiser On is best. For 4000 Nits titels dynamic range + 1 or +2 is best for me. Furthermore I found that the Contrast Enhancer (CE) is really useful for HDR (in contrast to SDR). But you must carefully set brightness and contrast slider with the Sony properly and balance it out with the Tone Curve white for 4000 Nits titels. The final result is nothing but excellent.

So I use 2 slightly different settings for 1000 and 4000 Nits titels. This is easy to switch in the Picture Settings of the Panasonic.

P.S. As you can see in the following image the Dynamic Adjustment Slider does not work completely linearly. Between 4/5 there seems to be a break. I projected the White 502 picture found in the R. Masciola HDR patterns for measuring the brightnes as a function of the slider setting.
Thank you so much for sharing your detailed settings for the Panasonic!

I have faithfully run on the two ARVE curves you did for me at the beginning of the year, and they have served me fantastically! Thanks for that!!!

I did wonder earlier in the thread why they ran the UB820 on SDR2020, but didn't get a distinct answer. When you get yourself accustomed to how HDR looks, it's growing on you in my impression, and just turning it off is not what I believe is the way forward. Very interesting to read your impressions!

I am now really looking into changing my UB900 to a UB9000 to be able lab a bit with this dynamic tone mapping. After all having a max of four fixed curves is certainly better than only Sony's single (dark) one, but getting it dynamically in the player will most likely be another step on the very long projector HDR journey!

Hey guys, this is very interesting, as mine is that version:

As I said my united arrived in December 2017 in UK and was very one of the very first in Europe.
Guys, those who has 8.003 can you clarify is your version is US ? 885ES or European 760ES ?

I've noticed to today when the screen goes fade to black I've noticed some grey small round splotches on the top left of the screen. Like stars. Not many there just curious to know if its image retention from the oppo 203. I've only just set it up. Apart from that the pic is great. I can't see it when watching a movie. I watched the beginning of planet earth 2 and Star Wars night scene both fantastic.

Hi There.
Thanks for that.
Looks like 8.003 is still the latest version then.

Have you got yourself a nice little USB light to attach to the USB port at all?

8.003 on 760. I think it changed around Feb/March time.

I would keep a very close eye on that if I were you.
It could be the presence of the very iffy uniformity these things can (and do) suffer from.

Also, I would report any concerns to you dealer and/or Sony ASAP so you have logged the issue right at the beginning.

If it gets worse it will only serve to help you out.

Other than that, if you are enjoying the picture when it is not black (as we all do mostly), then just get on and watch some movies!

Any chance you can capture the phenomenon in some pictures?

It's funny when I had the oppo 103 projector home screen you can see it cause it's black etc, movie watching you cant see it. You can see it when you don't have no source.

Question I've set my projector when adjusting horizontal movements I move projector but when I setup my lens memory the projector lens still moves slight to the right then back to its position. IS that normal?

Watching Passengers on UHD Wow what an amazing picture. Haven't set the panny yet using oppo 203 looks fantastic. The space scenes (so much for the rumours of them being grey) they are inky black. Very happy

Yeah, be under no illusions that blacks are generally pretty damn good on these.
Only on some very low light scenes with specific mastering do you get any hint of greyness.

However, but for a small change in the code to enable the iris or improve the dynamic dimming, we could enjoy just that bit more contrast.

Enjoy your projector. They are a stonking machine.

Im very happy with the panasonic ub820 in SDR2020 with my 885. But Id like to get improved HDR on my streaming sources ie Apple 4k tv for netflix/amazon/itunes/vudu and gameplay on my xbox one X. So I was thinking of getting a lumagen.

Does anyone here use a lumagen with their 885? Ive heard it does a great job with HDR. Does it do something similar to the panny's SDR 2020 mode that tone maps to the source's metadata?

Yes, I use the Lumagen Pro with mine. Tone mapping is class leading, and it’s soon to be improved with frame by frame tone mapping this quarter apparently which will put it a good step ahead of anything else.

Myself, Wookii , SJHT and some others here use Lumagen Pro along with 885es. I have even posted best settings without calibration, specifically when used with Lumagen Pro. But it does even better results when you do 3d Lut calibration, it throws stunning image. As Wookii alr Ady mention, very soon it will have dynamic tone mapping, which will implement mapping on the fly with much better results . Also recently theyve improved tone mapping handling. For me personally it's best what can be achieved with HDR mapping, and by now I believe it's the best combination to watch UHD HDR content . The other great option can be achieved via madVR, but this requires HTPC to be running.

You can, but obviously in service menu it will show the amount of times it's been reset, at the moment it shows 0.

When I received it turned it on to adjust it to the screen and there was light splotches on the screen. With a source it disappears but when there is a hdmi handshake etc it's there.
Too be honest I was quite annoyed because the box it came in didn't have that brand new look to it, ripped and faded stored at the back corner and forgotten about look to it. I know I might be over thinking it but first thing my wife said it is a refurb ??

Interesting...i ask because my mate took "3' units to get an acceptable sample ( current one is excellent...3rd time lucky!! ) His first example had terrible convergence, and i mean "terrible!!"

2nd unit had "blotches" that were visible in normal content, also extreme "bleeding" when displaying white text/logo,s

His 3rd and current sample is excellent...VERY VERY happy with it.

SONY "and JVC need to step up their quality control......seen several JVC E-Shift units with appalling quality control issues in the last gen also.....so NOT just SONY with issues here!!!

SONY "and JVC need to step up their quality control......seen several JVC E-Shift units with appalling quality control issues in the last gen also.....so NOT just SONY with issues here!!!
That's why I think I got a refurb.

If you paid a "NEW' unit price, then a "Refurb" is TOTALLY unacceptable!

I paid a new unit price and I questioned it but they assured me they ordered a new one. Maybe the guys who sent it must of thought these guys have an open cheque book they dont care what they buy, they wouldn't even know what to look for. I have to be fair though they are looking after me they're letting me hang onto this unit while I get a new one.
Your mate had to go through a third unit to get an acceptable one is not good kinda worries me that I don't want to go through that bull****. I hope the next one will be okay.
I'm kinda glad I bought it locally if not I would have to ship over East and wait for another one to arrive.

Oh my you own the Z1 now that is an impressive projector. You had to go through 3 as well ?? Its amazing you wouldnt think spending big $$$$$$$ on projectors their should be a problem. But looks like your third unit worked out the best. Id love to see one in action they have an impressive lens on them and I bet the PQ is outstanding. I wouldnt leave the room lol.

Tried the UB 820 utilizing the HDR optimizer looks good. I wish OPPO was able to do that.
