What happened to the first two? Any chance you can trade up to 870?

I love to go up to the 870 unfortunately the other half will make sleep in the car lol. She’s already annoyed that the first two have issues.

The first one has purple splotches on the background and the second one I could not get the word focus to focus. Even the dealers came to see if they can fix and they couldn’t.

Man hopefully the 3rd time's a charm. These types of problems can be super frustrating.

Annoyed with you? I could see if everything was mostly fine and you were not picking some perfection but these sound like major issues. You should be annoyed with them. Not the other way around.

They owe you a 100% working projector without any flaws. You paid a hell lot of money for it.

If the dealer is annoyed with you, change the dealer and let Sony know. If a Sony Rep is annoyed with you let your dealer AND Sony Support know.

Either way, you are 100% right, this projector does not come with the price tag of a toy and that sort of behaviour is an embarassment.

I agree. I’ve asked them to install it and I want to make sure before they leave that it’s 100%.

There replacing it which is a good thing but still I shouldn’t have to be on my third.

And that´s why they should feel bad and not you!

So far I have had very good experiences with Sony Prime Support and all my units got swapped with new and sometimes even higher revisions of their models. Good luck!

The variance in quality of these projectors never ceases to amaze me. QC *MUST* be non existent!

Not even getting the word 'FOCUS' on the focus screen to focus is terrible!

It evidently must be cheaper just to keep shipping people replacements than to make sure each and every unit leaves the factory working as it should.

I agree the QC is ridiculous. I’m hoping the third will be the last.

It was suggested by one of his Sony bods that there was a setting in the service menu that could help with the focus.

I have looked and there are several entries that pertain to the lens, but any one of them could be what they referred to or conversely, none of them may be.

I struggle to think what a service menu item could do with physical focus, unless it sets the lens to a different position or something?

Or maybe it is just an electronic trick, A-la 'Dynamic Focus Optimiser'.

I'm sure there are adjustments for the lens in the service menu, probably stuff that pertains to the lens motor and such. Dynamic Focus adjustment has nothing to do with focus, it is basically a version of processing similar to Darbee. It makes things look sharper, but it has nothing to do with lens focus.

Hi.
Does anyone know where I could get my hands on a copy of Sony's latest (I assume) version of their calibration pro software?

Namely: Projector Calibration Pro v1.011

Pretty please?

Not as far as I am aware. It is for multi point greyscale and/or gamma adjustment.

I tried asking earlier, and no one was willing and said to contact Sony who refused.

Hello, all. I'm contemplating moving up from my VW695ES to an 885ES and was wondering if black level loss down low, with the 885, would be noticeable when compared to the 695. I like strong black levels down low, but I'm not a stickler for it. I was a long time, repeat JVC owner and had an NX9 on order. And then the delays began, so I took a chance on my first Sony projector, this 695, and am very happy I did so. I absolutely love its motion handling in True Cinema, over all contrast performance, and supreme celluloid-like imagery.

I did demo the 885 at Value Electronics, but they had it on a high contrast/gray screen which made it difficult for me to compare the black levels to my Sony. Any advice here would be appreciated.

I was also a long time multi-JVC owner, extolling the importance of deep blacks. I do love UHD/4K, though, and have a large screen. Felt I had no alternatives (Started with a lamp based Sony few years ago before moving to the new one) and honestly, even though noticable, the black levels do not at all disturb me. Preferably you should look at them in a store where they can demo side to side and see if you also feel the same about the slight loss or not.

The laser is the biggest reason for going 885ES. Just fantastic to never have to worry about whether the light level has gone down enough to warrant new lamp. There is also a general feeling of something else with the laser that I struggle to quantify, it just feels "richer".

Generally I have started to appreciate the way the Sonys present a very film like picture. This goes for both lamp and laser light sources.

In the end, as I believe most will agree on, both are fantastic and similar, but with slight upsides and downsides.

Honestly, if you forget about all the numbers ppl seem to bandy around here, the black levels of the NX9 and N5 aint that great!

I just had an opportunity to see both of them for the 2nd time today, and honestly, i wasn't impressed with the black levels at all.. i really don't think either one of them, the NX9 could beat the overall image quality of the Sony 885 with it's lasers.. and Sony's better colors (which to me always seem more dynamic).

Don't get me wrong.. I am not bashing the projectors.. i think they are great... i just don't think they have anything over the Sony's overall.. and i am going to stick to that opinion...

i have more or less decided to get the 885 myself,.. get a laser, and don't worry it about it for the next 3-5 years ...

I stopped watching AppleTV for a while - in part because I moved the Oppo out of the media room for the Panny 820. And because I cancelled my Netflix and Amazon subscription

But after the firmware update and the return of The Grand Tour, I started watching on the AppleTV 4K/760ES again, this time bypassing the Oppo’s HDR-SDR conversion

Have to say I’m pretty impressed how the 760ES looks. The lights in the studios have that same HDR presence as they do on my Sony ZD9
