Yeah, I installed it too...

So far the contrast enhancements seem to be better. But I’m weary of the cognitive dissonance that’s always lurking. Ideally one would measure before and after reference images. Or test with two projectors. But who has the patience for that?

The thought I had that brought me to the point where I decided to perform the update, was that if Sony didn't want it 'out there' then they wouldn't have put it on a website accessible to anyone and everyone.
So I updated.
Well, from my brief testing with GoTG vol2, it did look like there are some improvements to the image. Not mind blowing to be sure, but there. The dimming is definitely more marked.
The HDR10 and HDR Reference settings seem much nicer overall with more 'clarity' is the only way I can put it.
All in all, it is quite a jump software wise from 8.004 to 8.100. That is a 96 point difference and to me would indicate some proper revisions of things under the bonnet.
I will report any other things I notice over time but as of now, no regrets in updating as there has been no downside I can see.

Change control should see to it that they will name any revised software differently to the currently released version, officially public facung or not.
Any changes should have a later version number (e.g. 8.101) as numbering a new/revised software with a previous number could cause any number of issues.
It is just good programming practice I feel.

That would go against all conventions for software releases where any variations on to an earlier build will have a different build number.

Hi.

I have performed the update and it didn't break anything on my UK 760.

Do I recommend it? I personally haven't seen any downside to having performed the update, but it is entirely your decision as to whether you do it or not.

Also, read the instructions for performing the update from the official website for the 8.004 version *as well as the PDF that resides with the new update*, as that one misses out (what I think is) a crucial step.

Take your time and don't rush it.

All your settings stay the same but you will likely find there are some tweaks to make due to the improved curves etc.

Where it's posted is a website that Sony Australia use to provide firmware and software for not just home end users but a lot of commercial companies.

Honestly? Who knows. But as others have posted laser dimming (we assume) is working a lot better. The iris button still does nothing. There is nothing visible in the menus. But without any release notes...

Again, without release notes we don't know. I was on 8.004 already.

Has anyone measured the on/off contrast (full field white / single lit pixel, measured at the lens) with Dynamic dimming (Full) engaged, to see if there is actually a change in on/off contrast with this new firmware?

Get out of town! LOL.

I have not the gear to perform the measurements of which you speak.

However any improvements will be along the lines of the 870 I reckon. No increase in contrast per-sae, but more how it handles the picture near black.

Hi.
Iris does nothing different to before.

So that is a no go on this model.

As for the older software first, what version are you on now?

The lens on the 760 does yes, the 760 technically doesn't as the user has no way to access the settings for it.

It does close and open again at power on, just before the laser flicks into life, but that is about it.

Well that's a bummer, to know it's there but it won't add to the fun...

WRT the 8.1 firmware, I'd say (without measurements to back my claims) that the dynamic laser control (on Full anyways) works better than before. And that the contrast enhancer is, well, enhanced. I used to run the contrast enhancer on Low (didn't like the higher setting), now I run it on High. And that makes it possible to lower the Brightness from 75% to 65%. All in all I'm (so far) a happy camper.

Considering the positive feedbacks, I upgraded my unit today. It’s a euro unit. I had no problem doing the upgrade.

I’m only using HDR with games, madVR doing the tone mapping otherwise. Thus far I’m not seeing much but I only tested for an hour. At least it does not look worse.

Hi.
The improvements seem to be to the built in HDR curves, contrast enhancer and maybe the dimming.
All of which (or at least the first two) are, to all practical intents and purposes, overridden by madVR are they not?
So if using a outboard VP of any sort, the update is less necessary.
Release notes would be nice.
No doubt any bug fixes will just be denoted by 'various bug fixes' however.
The cynic in me says that they will look at what people think has improved and then put that in the release notes so we all feel good about it.... lol.
