So... streaming 4k content is borderline at best... it looks ok, but I am not sure how it "could" look until I see it with faster bandwidth... I suspect that the upscaling of the projector has a lot to do with it looking at least "ok"

So, that brings my question... Does the 885/760 upscaling work well? Has anyone tried? If so, would you know if it is much improved over an older Sony like I have? This is a big part of any major financial decision I may make...

I am sure the 885 vs my older 500es will be a night and day improvement on UHD blurays... but bandwidth for streaming may be an issue for me.

on a side note... I have 2 friends... (well, more than 2, because I am such an awesome guy :-) , I live in the Houston TX area... one of my friends is from London, and another's wife is from Japan... they both have relatives there they visit quite often... this is making the wheels turn in my head... I know the downside of warranty support, and I am not trying to be cheap, but I think I will at least explore the possibility if they brought a 760es back on their next trip, what the price difference would be.... I have read that it can be up to 50% .... I just wish SONY would treat all customers as 'Global" and have a standard price for the product.

if anyone knows, please advise on the upscaling...

thx
The upscaling on an 885 works very well. But the upscaling on your 500ES is no slouch.

This indeed will be very interesting to see how the numbers work out. Do you have a lumagen pro as well by any chance ?

thanks, A wise man advised me a while back, that going from a 500es to a 520es for the sake of HDR is not really worth the investment due to the lack of brightness.... the 885/760es has 2000 lumen vs 1800 on the 520es of which I was advised not worth the jump.... is just 200 more going to make a difference? I know this is a subjective question, and dependent on room setup... I have a totally dark dedicated HT with a Da-Lite 150' High Power Screen... I get plenty of light from the 500es (of course I could always use more) ... but any opinions are appreciated..

I've not spec'd in a Lumagen yet. I sort of want to see what the performance is going to be like without one first... using the 885 to scale (also will have an Oppo 203 inline so can play with the scaling capabilities of it).

I've seen others post that they are able to set the Sony 4k projectors to the the 1.24x anamorphic setting, and then the ISCO 1.25x lens horizontally stretches it ok. See the following two threads:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/117-2-...-4xl-iiil.html

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-dig...ic-lens-2.html

I know the content being delivered is 3840x2160, not the full 4096x2160 resolution of the Sony 4k panel . Something has to scale it to that so the 1.25x horizontal stretch lens can do it's thing. I know the Lumagen can scale it, but it seems like others report that the Sony itself might be able to as well through it's 1.24x anamorphic mode?

If anyone has additional experience or insights on this I'd love to hear them. Otherwise I guess we'll find out next week whether I need to drop the additional $$ on a Lumagen Pro!

Black levels, sharpness, colours, everything picture quality wise is superb. My dealer already prepared the service menu 'trick' for me to get rid of the green smearing discussed in the other topic, so I wasn't bothered by that.

HOWEVER, and this is a serious problem for me, 23p (and also 24p) mode in UHD resolution (3840x2160) using a PC (WIN10) is not working correctly. It looks like a HDMI handshake problem of some sort. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and always sooner or later the problem is returning. E.g. after a while playing (usually within a couple of minutes) a movie or just a static Win10 desktop at those framerates, the screen goes black (one half, then the other, then total). I tries to reconnect or handshake again and again, mostly unsuccessful. I tried all the different colorspaces and dynamic ranges available in Windows, tried all options in de VW760 (standard/enhanced mode, dynamic range limited/full), none successful. Tried re-installing Windows10, different Nvidia drivers, with AVR (Denon X7200WA) in chain or direct connecting PC to VW760. Nothing works.

Important to notice is that 50p and 60p in RGB-FULL (8bit) work just fine, also switching between these. And I'm also pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with my playback chain or cables. I've used this exact setup with my previous JVC X7500 (also full 18gbit). My typical usecase (as advised by the creator of Madvr) is using RGB-FULL 60p 8bit for desktop use and RGB-FULL 23,976 (23p in Windows) 12bit for 24p content, which my JVC did without any problems.

@jqmn and @SoulOfUniverse comments about the strange EDID behaviour trigger me. As further investigating leads me to believe there's either something wrong with the EDID or it has problems with the full 18gbit bandwidth. So just now I tried to read out the EDID for the Sony and this looks really off. It says manufacture date 2013, no uhd/4k resolutions specified.

Maybe my PC does force a EDID read out frequently and is this causing my problem? And the Shield and X800 don't do this? Any ideas?

Next I might try a Win10 EDID override in the registry. Maybe that works...

My complete setup:
HTPC (win10, nvidia 1080ti gpu, madvr)
Denon X7200WA AVR
Sony VW760
Certified full 18gbit HDMI cables
Hi.

If it is anything like the VW550 then it says in the manual the maximum resolution for a PC/Computer connection is 1080p. (Page 58 in my manual).

Cheers.

Hi.

I believe upscaling and Reality Creation go hand in hand on these.
The version on the 500 is excellent but the 760 will have much improved algorithms.

Cheers.

The VW885 is substantially more light , see the previous posts what others have to say about the jump from 675 to the 885.

Two posters with VW885 have reported using 138" diagonal 2.35:1 , 1.1-1.3 gain screens at 70-80% ( medium) running HDR .

For reference , I had a VW675 Sony and RS600 JVC . My screen was 133" diagonal(smaller) 2.35:1, *1.5 gain (higher) , and even with a anamorphic lens
giving *additional 20% brightness I still had to run both of these on high to get descent HDR .

By going to the VW885 I was only expecting to drop my screen gain to a unity level reference material for the same size with the anamorphic lens. Now I realize I can not only lower the gain, I can also increase the size to 140" and I don't even need the anamorphic lens to achieve that goal . I could easily run an even bigger screen if I really wanted to using the anamorphic lens butr I would run out of space on my wall . For a average to larger home theater screen this
projector will more than suffice .

EDIT: I didn't really notice at first the screen you apparently have now . This HighPower screen at 150" ,assuming 2.35:1 , is going to be bright, depending on how you mount your projector . One thing I have heard, maybe others could confirm ,
is that light from laser is more uniform across the screen and less likely to hotspot .

The 1600 calibrated has been exceeded , it appears the 1800 range that Werner ( Jetsen) first reported is more in line, Ekki confirmed 1700-1800 . Great news indeed .
1830 lumens calibrated here. Max gross lumens consistently over 2000 lumens

Will be calibrating more units soon so will be able to confirm what calibrated lumens these come in at.

It is important to note that in order to unlock the full light output of the projector beyond 1600 lumens is only achievable via the service menu, so your AV dealer and/or video calibrator will be able to help you with that

It would be interesting to know if that does shorten the laser life or not. If 20K hours is at the factory default max laser setting. Or, maybe it doesn't matter. Or no one will really know for another 20,000 hours. Let me know in 35 years.

EDID Issues

I fixed my EDID issue (dual AVRs, color space dropping to Rec 709, sound dropping down to stereo from lossless, and Oppo saying my pj can't do 4k). I brought back the HDFury Linker by inserting it to a spot between my first AVR zone 2 out and my second AVR BD in. I set the Linker to its first custom preset: 600Mhz/2020/HDR). Back in business.

Hope this helps someone with similar or related issues.

Sounds like you are using the W\B service menu item to go substantially above 128 for green and then bringing up the others to match and balance at some level. Have you played around with this to find out when red begins to clip? When I use the Sony calibration procedure for setting W/B out of the 5000 service manual (figuring the procedure should essentially be identical to the 885/760), I start to run out of red pretty fast and that is at their recommended levels that leaves green at 128. Maybe my i1 is flaking out or shouldn't be used with laser (although I thought Kris said it should work fine; maybe I misunderstood him?).

Ok folks a good update on Lumagen Pro 18Ghz output not seeing this projector as capable 18 ghz display unit. My Lumagen output was locked and limited when wad calibraing HDR, that was advised in HDR webinar from Jim and I forgot to remove that limitation, done factory reset and clicked save, and you need to reboot lumagen and it shows on info 18 Ghz:Y so now outputing signal in 4:2:2 12 bit for [email protected] as needed, support from Lumagen also verified EDID of this projector and has confirmed that it is correct EDID as expected, so please ignore my suggestions about potential issues around EDID of this unit. Happy Days

All due respect to Arrow I can’t recommend his Service Menu trick. After testing a lot on Sunday with football you loose color space and color temp options. If you primarily watch movies then his trick setting you at 65 may not bother you. I personally love tweaking for DirecTV. I have been called an eye candy extremist though.

Anyone who says in the other thread this projector was washed out and flat could have been a combination of the trick and other setting factors. I have not seen one scene that looks washed out and flat. I will say football did not look as good with the service menu trick. The “pop” came back after I reversed it back to factory and was able to tweak.

The 760/885 is impressive enough out of the box. I would let Sony handle tweaks or tricks with a firmware upgrade.

BOBCAT, Woof Woof, SJHT and 2 others like this.

4K HDR10- ignore the “rules” and trust your eyes!

The dynamic contrast setting makes a huge difference to my eyes. I have it set to high and with HDR content it’s pretty profound how much it elevates the contrast. Some might argue it’s over processed, but to my eyes I like it.

Set laser to 70-80 is pretty bright for HDR on my 138” diagonal 2:35:1 ST130 screen.

I can confirm that black levels on SDR content are not similar to my JVC X550R one, but its not an issue at all as overall picture looks great, but what this Projector is really a King is HDR content image is just astonishing and more movies are coming in HDR even old one remastered and they all look great! And Blacks here are superb in HDR picture colours popping our and picture is just amazing with its super sharp image. My friend owner of first laser Epson LS 10000 sais he cannot believe how great picture is and is very sharp, still experimenting on 3d lut calibration for HDR

Yes I found changing setting 2 to 0 and leaving 15 at 1 remains colours to be popped out and removes greenish presence in white, I believe setting 15 increases the lumens output, but I agree with you it losses that pop out effect in HDR and SDR

You know it has to shorten the life. The only question is if it really makes a difference, in the amount it shortens it.

I need to make sure I understood you correctly. Does changing only setting 2 to 0 and leaving everything else untouched resolve the green moire and leave the image quality as before the change?

Probably will never know as VW885 users are only using 70-80% ( medium) laser for HDR on screens 138" 1.1-1.3 gain .

Your screen is this size or smaller Mike and you were saying you are running mid laser too ,correct ? How long do you expect your projector to last ?
Unless you have some crystal ball I'd expect no one knows how laser will pan out in the long run , by the looks of things this projector will
do as good as anything in class .

Not from a Japanese dealer. It's an 885 and I got it here in the US. Not sure I understand your instructions. Do you know what page it is in the manual? I can't seem to find it.
