So for the last few days, I have been asking if dual projectors is feasible, particularly for boosting HDR. Then somebody sent me the link here, and I am in awe.

Art, what exactly does the Lumagen add to the mix? You mentioned tone mapping....are both projectors shooting exactly the same simultaneous image, or are they handling different duties(ie one shooting midtones, the other highlights)?

Again, truly a humbling thread.

Presently the Lumagen is used for tone mapping and switching, delivering the same signal to both projectors splitting with a one in two out HDMI splitter just before the projectors.

The HDR now really has enough light to see a dramatic difference. When I had one 5000 HDR really was a wash compared to SDR as to which one looked better on a given title with my size screen.

The first is the pattern as the the camera corrected for the light. The second shows the image being projected from the stack ,the last is more what the room actually looks like when the pattern is up !

Hey Art, seeing that third pic made me wonder how good your black and white movies look now - with sunglasses on!

So, how does SDR compare for single vs stacked? Similar dramatic difference?

Well the nice thing is there is now headroom to do things a single projector couldn't do. The screen size really was the issue. Obviously, on a significantly smaller screen the effect would be the same but where's the fun in that ?

SDR looks better too so you have to decide if you want to maintain the difference between SDR and HDR or not. Before ,on the screen size I have, there just wasn't enough light to make HDR have any sort of real advantage.

Yeah, Ken was at my place yesterday calibrating my Balder and he mentioned that. In St Louis. I’m only two Sony 5000s behind!

Yes, he will be coming back here after that stack to get things more finalized prior to my get together on the 28th.

So, it sounds like to me that if the stack is used for both SDR and HDR, they both look much (dramatically) better; however, the difference between SDR and HDR may not necessarily be noticeable if the stack is used for both SDR & HDR. Ultimately, I'd think folks would be interested in seeing the absolute best output for SDR as well as HDR; being able to differentiate the two may not necessarily be important (in my mind at least).

I'm going to give you my take. SDR looks good for me at more than 30fL. I found that when I had lamp based projectors a new lamp on my 14' screen at that time, it had a much more punchy look at 40 fL. I could get that output but only when the lamp had just been installed, in a few weeks in was down to about to about 31 to 29 range. Literally, it looked less appealing every single time I turned it on. When I got my first 5000 I still had the 14' screen when I went to 16" it still had enough light for SDR at around 30fL but when it was set up for HDR it was obvious that lowering the overall picture level to obtain the effects of specular highlights left the image looking overall way too dim. The result was that I preferred SDR in any given instance, generally, to what HDR could give with the amount of lumens the device could provide.

In comes Chris Cooley tells me he is going to stack 5000s in his theater on his 17' screen was I interested in a second projector to do the same. Now HDR looks great with the lumens needed to make it work satisfactorily on a 16' screen.

To say that I don't like SDR with 70fL would be a lie , I do ,but I don't have to have the extra light there I do with HDR. So I run SDR to give me about 40fL most of the time....
