According to what is written on the Alcons Audio website, they state "Where conventional (compression driver) technology has an RMS-to-peak ratio of 1:2 (i.e. 75W RMS / 150W peak), Alcons pro-ribbon drivers have an RMS-to-peak ratio of around 1:15 (i.e. 70W RMS / 1000W peak). Together with the ultra-low power compression (resulting from the patented heat management + the direct air contact of the voice-coil) this enables the maximum dynamic range that 24-bit Digital Cinema has to offer. The CR4, CR5 and Cinemarray™ CRA30 systems have a 2400W peak power handling."

Is that ratio true for all compression driver-based speakers?

Some claim 1:4, but most are 1:2 (on paper), but a vital part of the Alcons 1:15 is the way they keep distortion level in check while reaching that number...

(EDIT: 1:15, not 15:1... )

The demo was impressive and your screen was definitely a big part of the overall experience. I hear AVScience will be stocking frames to go along with your V6 material.

Happy gang of Pro-ribbon Immersive Experience demoers at this years Alcons CEDIA booth. Thanks again for all you AVS’ers valuable inputs in terms of improving each year, we’ll certainly keep taking your feedback into account for future shows!

Had the wondeful opportunity of meeting Tom at United International Pictures, Amsterdam for a small demo of the Alcons system installed there. I am not an expert in analysing the technicalities of the sound.

Ellie Goulding - Love me like you do : although played at reference level, the still seemed low to my liking, but it was nice to listen to the surrounds. Tom said he wasn’t very happy to play this clip and I could understand why.

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol - Sand Dune Scene- First thoughts; what i experienced immediately was that my brain was trying to adjust to so many different elements that did not sound like they were on the same layer. The separation of sound was just incredible.

LOTR - Bilbo steals the Ring - This scene was used to show level of clarity in centre speakers and ATMOS . The clip did not last long but still impressed.

Ready Player One - trailer - The trailer in itself was bass heavy and had a lot of synthesized music. Very impressed by how good the system handled the bass.

2 Dolby Demo Clips - This was beyond what I imagined to expect. Truly outstanding. I had a wide grin on my face throughout. This is what every cinema theater should sound like.

I did not have much time to soedn after the demo but Tom went into a lot of technical details which went a little over my head. He sounded really passionate about what he was doing. I concluded out metting by saying that I could never go to my local cinema again and I’ve been spoilt now.

I think Alcons has a new customer now. 🙂

Can someone explain how Alcons Audio manages to get 134 dB out of a 4" pro-ribbon driver and a 8" woofer? Referring to the CRMS-SR: https://www.alconsaudio.com/product/crms-sr/

Look at the Freq range 134 dB (Sentinel10 200 Hz - 10 kHz)

Even taking account the frequency range they mention, 134 dB seems very high. I mean what would their output be if the frequency range was 80 Hz - 20 kHz?

Because it’s going to pretty hard to hit 134dB at freq below 200hz.

There are a lot of people on this forum who have heard their CEDIA demo's over the last 4 years, I've yet to find one who thought their output was lacking.

Math and efficiency. It's quoted as peak, not sustained, and above 200Hz since that is where the very high 103dB spec'd sensitivity is relevant. Sentinel 3 with 380W is ~26dB gain + [email protected] 1W = 129dB, and Sentinel 10 with 1450W is ~31dB + 103dB = 134dB. It's physically a reasonably large cabinet for a ported 8" woofer with extension to ~75Hz at roughly 18.5" x 18" x 7" deep. The design also implies it will be wall mounted, so the low end of the woofer will always get 6dB of help from the wall vs a stand mounted speaker. You would have to ask Alcons if the numbers are calculated or measured numbers, as many pro audio products they would be compared with post calculated peak SPL.

The CRMS is plenty dynamic in smaller rooms as well as larger. Their 90x60 new surrounds will make then easier to place in terms or dispersion and distance.

Although there are some HT demo installations around, Alcons is mostly installed in commercial cinemas. A very good alternative if you would like a proper immersive "home cinema" demo is attending the ISE or CEDIA shows, whereas next ISE will be in February 2019 (https://www.iseurope.org/) in Amsterdam. They normally run their regular CRMS at ISE / CEDIA, but accompanied by CRMS compact for surrounds. Overall you´ll get a good feel of the system at those shows albeit a proper demo at a residential home might be even better as showroom demos are always somewhat challenging in order to really portray their capacity. The one the did at 2018 CEDIA was quite good though, a proper audio room that finally provided some pressurised bass response. They do have some nice HT installs in Norway if you like Viking territory...
