Stunning install Nigel -

Whilst us here in the UK await 3+ weeks of boredom can you go into any details about the install? The ceiling (glass/crystal?) lighting looks breathtaking and a great way to excuse a dark background - genius!

Michigan governor did the same as of midnight last night. As for the Eclipse plus one there. It not only makes all those new films look great but would make all the old stuff new again. The theater looks fantastic ! I flew on Saturday and had another session planned for today but due to the mandate pretty sure my CFI will tell me in a few hours that we are no go.

Indeed.
Gives the devs time to double down on new software for all our current kit over the next year.
I mean if they can keep 70's spacecraft with a few bytes of ram going for nearly 50 years, they can squeeze more from our current tech.

This whole thing brings a bit of perspective however.

We have all had it great in AV land for a long time in reality and the nit picking of already superb tech is now moot.

Stay safe everyone and as long as we can all hold our nerve and do the right thing by ourselves and our neighbours/society then we WILL get through this!

For the record, I love this community warts and all!

Peace all and look after yourselves and others.

Thank you for all the kind words guys

@A7mad78 called it... The audio system is indeed by Steinway & Sons / Steinway Lyngdorf

I will shortly be posting the details in a build thread. So watch this space.

That said, I will be posting a build thread and details for the TV & Gaming Room type home theater that I also just completed first.

In other words, I will shortly be posting build threads for both rooms

Believe I was the first one to hear this, albeit in it's not quite completed state. This will be great to hear again now but maybe some walnut required.... perhaps a fine mahogany? Ok ok.. oak lighting, there, settled.

Uhm, it sounds like this is either AreYaHavingThat on 95 Horse Power, or an alterego of Ciara O'Doherty who doesn't even blush (must be the foundation) on 95 HP.

Very interesting thread!

Though it was somewhat maddening that I could not find mention of the price of the projector anywhere in the thread!

That aside:

If I was able to afford such a projector I suspect I'd disagree that it's contrast performance means "you don't need any masking."

I use 4 way masking and I'm very sensitive to unmasked images. For movie viewing my wall surrounding my screen is black velvet (including all speakers covered), black velvet on the floor, black velvet pulled across the dark brown felt ceiling above the screen.
And black velvet curtains pulled around the whole room. It really is the "black box/bat cave" environment - I'm pretty certain less reflective than many pro installs that take steps to have a low reflectivity room. I use the JVC RS600 projector.

And yet...I STILL definitely "need" masking. That's not just for the "projected black bars" but also for the unprojected area to the sides of the image (I vary my image size, sometimes making it smaller on my big screen).

While..yes...with some image content the unprojected areas on my screen are undetectable, with OTHER content - e.g. bright but not super high contrast scenes - there is still enough light able to get back to the sides of my Stewart ST130 screen to make the unprojected part visible. This issue goes away with the black velvet side masks.

I'd expect the same to be true with the Christie projector. With the right mix of contrast, the unprojected portion of the screen wouldn't be visible. With another mix of brightness/contrast, it would be. I wouldn't like that variation.

(If I weren't going to use masking I'd think the best alternative would be using a flat, darker gray screen with a bright projector like the Christie, to reduce room light reflection levels on the unprojected screen portion).

Rich,
I agree even if you can no longer see the "gray" border so many films have irregular edges and the masking also adds an aesthetic look to the image and to the screen when the lights are up. I did mention this point earlier in the thread.

Pretty sure Christie set the dealer cost before the last demo in Cypress so the rest is up to the individual dealers.

I think the point is that if you were to raise your hand in front of the projected black bars there would be no shadow because black is actually black, as in a complete absence of projected light.

So it's more a case that you can get away without masking, if you have a perfect blacked out environment.

That said however, if your room is not an optimal blacked out environment, then yes, due to light reflections back onto the screen this would increase the need to for masking.

Plus as @Art Sonneborn 's points are valid as well.

Me personally, I will will be using masking
.
