Thanks in advance for your reply.
Best Buy has a policy to match the lowest advertising price. Since Dealers cannot show McIntosh Mx170 MSRP, a Best Buy salesman cannot give you a 10% discount. Some dealers including Best Buy Magnolia salesmen love to make you believe that they are prohibited to give customers discount. Do you believe it? Do you think dealers have to show McIntosh their invoices? Apparently, if you pre-order the MX170, you're the guy who want to have the Mx170 on the first day it's released. Why do they bother to deal with you?

I’m confused, what are you asking? In the past I have bought both from Magnolia/Best Buy and an independent dealer. I found benefits to buying at both. Best Buy gave a a great credit line, zero interest for 36 months financing. The dealer gave me a fairly decent discount (it was a package deal with a couple of other items) and since I was paying cash I bought from him. If I needed to finance I would have gone to Magnolia. When I bought my HiFi and Home Theater a couple of years ago I actually did both. I bought half at one and half at the other. It was all a matter of financing. The independent dealer asked me why I didn’t buy the whole thing from him as he could have given me a better price but it understood when I told him I needed the Best Buy financing. And as why deal with someone who wants to buy the first off the assembly line products? As my sales guy told me today, I’m a loyal customer and he will make sure I stay that way.

My point is clear and simple. There is no such thing as "Dealers have to sell McIntosh products at MSRP or they will lose their dealership contract."

Congrats!!

Do you still have your MX160 for a good side to side comparison? For folks that dont see going beyond a 7.1.4 system, the MX160 is still a compelling choice. But if sound quality has been improved I am very interested in the new MX170.

I'm also wondering if the MX160/Lyngdorf MP-50 might be better for those of us with Wides.

With the outgoing models, Wides could be matrixed for all sources, including native Atmos, but those often make very little use of them.

@joerod , would you be willing to compare a few Atmos movies with both and share your impressions?

In looking at his rack over the years, I believe he typically pulls out one and puts in another. Lol

Though now that I think about it I don't even know if he has wides.

So I was up late last night and then spent a good amount of time this afternoon working with the 170. I will say it is.... actually I am working on my Review as I post this. I will answer a few questions though if anyone has any? I will say I am very happy and if you are wondering if it is better than the 160 the answer is YES.

More to come.

Joe, what is the firmware version on your MX170? Just curious what it is shipping with. I'll be picking my MX170 up on Saturday.

I will report this in a little bit. I also need to add it to the first page. I will be recruiting a few fellow 170 owners who would like to help in future beta testing of firmware updates before they are publicly released. If this is something you might be interested in send me a PM with your name and email. You can also include your phone number if you do not check your email often and would prefer a text alert.

Please don’t ask me what might be coming soon because at this time I am not allowed to say.

Haha- it’s not for everyone. Of course I would help every step of the way and of course help resolve any issues if they did happen to happen. Though I will say we never experienced a single one beta testing with the 160. Were 37-0.

I picked up my MX170 this morning and installed it into my system. I still need to run Room Perfect, but I've got lots of football to watch first.

The firmware version on my unit is 3.5.5.

For those of you with Control4 systems, the MX170 does not show up for identification into the Control4 project using SDDP (simple device discovery protocol) whereas the MX160 does. There is not yet an MX170 driver in Control4's online database. However, the good news is that the MX160 IP driver works just fine with the MX170 after identifying the MX170 into the project via its IP address.

Hello,

Just setting mine up today. After switching out my MX122, I need some help with a few questions:

1. Is there any on screen volume indicator? My unit is the back of the viewers
2. Is there any video/audio pass through to the TV when the MX170 is shut off in standby mode?
3. Can you get a pink noise signal to the speakers when you are in the manual level menu?
4. Are there any apps that can control the MX170? Tried the Steinway/Lyngdorf apps, they don’t recognize the MX170.
5. Any HEX codes for the control by Irule or other control systems?

Thanks in advance,
Cheers

1. Unlike on the MX160 (which has an on-scrren display for the HDMI 1 output), it appears the MX170 does not have an onscreen display capability.
2. I don't think so. I am using a control system so I can't really test this without shutting the MX170 down with its remote control and leaving the TV on.
3. You can run the speaker verification which will output a signal for the chosen speaker.
4. Just the web browser interface.
5. The Source menu lets you select which McIntosh IR code you want to use for each input. The standard McIntosh IR codes are available in Hex form at Remote Central.

Hope this helps. If I discover otherwise on any of these points as I play around with the unit some more, I'll report back.

Thanks for the update. No onscreen diplay is unfortunate. To anyone thinking of upgrading from the MX122 to the MX170: the MX170 is lacking some simple things as outlined above. Also, my main TV has an intermittent hdmi video drop out. And sometimes fails video handshake. The sound is definitely an improvement, but I will wait to see if these “differences” and quirks force me back to my MX122.
Cheers
