sound great. not as loud as my focals can play...but think around 87-93db is loud enough for most. my subs...no clue they even on! and the stage, depth, height all very good so far.

Great review. You sure have me wanting a pair.

Seriously, I have a dealer near me. I just bought Bryston Mini A's from him. If he has the LRS in stock I will be bringing a pair home for evaluation.

These seem to like some toe-in, but of course it varies as much as every room varies. Might also try just a little wider. And correct, not as loud nor do they need to be played as loudly.

They were a little rough for the first few hours, but that goes away with some time.

I will play around with these all summer. glad I didnt cancel my order which I almost did a couple times.

ML, who equips the newish Masterpiece series with Anthem Room Correction, is only for the bass, the cone woofer, but not the dipole panel. Conventional wisdom sorta goes out the window with dipoles. The only thing that works is working with placement.

A couple more that I can think of. OK, this is hugely my kind of music, but very unlikely that anyone else will be in to it. Been this way all of my life.

Nevertheless, great recordings

https://tidal.com/browse/album/53226201

https://tidal.com/browse/album/6423680

This one below isn't on Tidal as Chesky Records won't let them have it. It's on SACD.

Listen to the sax on this. Talk about WAY outside the boundary of that left speaker

Spent later evening tonight back down on the Martin Logans.

Really bizarre how different the MLs are vs the LRSs. If I had to leave for the proverbial desert island, and I could only take one pair of speakers, I would insist on both.

got these set up a lil different today. experimented with 40/60/80 hz xover. I like 80 but I could see others liking 60 or 40. 80 has a nice rich bass which is better than my focals at lower volumes. the speakers about 1.5m apart, 1.75 pulled away from front wall, 2.5m from mlp. toe in 12 degree maybe. these speakers have a very nice sound to them and image really well. I like the highs and mids better with the focals, but obviously this just day 2 and maybe breakin will provide better sound. mids/highs have a bit of edginess. the center image, depth, soundstage and separation of instruments are really surprising. I like. so far my bridged amps doing well with temps around 115F at -10 master volume which is 87db about. I ran them at 0mv for 10minutes or so to see if amps would go to protect mode but was fine. speakers didnt sound that great tho at mid 90's db....I will be trying more setup positions as time goes by. I dabbled with lrs about 12 feet apart and that didnt work very well with speakers disappearing...more to come

"mids/highs have a bit of edginess"

That took a while to go away. Maybe in the range of 40 or 50 hours. Another more unpleasant possibility is that you're getting into the range of speakers (albeit at a very cheap price) that resolve well enough that they will let you know if they don't like certain associated equipment. From what I can tell so far, they are no ways near as brutal as the ESLs, but I can hear pretty far into the food chain with the LRSs too.

And IMO these are not speakers for listening loudly. There just isn't enough panel area. I would think you'd be at 3.7i or maybe even 20.7s or 30.7s for that. Doesn't matter to me much as I don't do it. True, I've had the MLs way up there a few times listening to hop hip at 110db+. The LRSs are much more for peeps who listen to stuff similar to what I posted in the last several posts.

Although we've never discussed it before, but if that's typical of what you like to listen to, I would consider sending them back. These are not going to be pleasant. Serious!

I'm a Pink Floyd fan from the beginning (saw them live five times), but good gawd what awful recordings up until 'The Wall' was better, but still in my bottom 10% of the recordings I have. Although, not really Pink Floyd, Amused to Death is better, but still...….

the little flippers to adjust rake really make a huge difference. I have them engaged standing the speaker more upright.

I listen to all sorts of stuff. have 32k songs on computer plus tidal.
I am using 2 pretty big subs. pink floyd sounds good at medium/lower volume. steely dan sounds good too.

Steely Dan, Dire Straights and Alan Parson are probably the best of a pretty bad lot. Some live stuff also does pretty well, such as Humble Pie at the Fillmore circa 1971 and Cream at Prince Albert from about 15 years or so ago.

LRS - what is new? Inquiring minds want to know

Just ordered a pair, but still in the dark about what is new. The LRS uses the exact same quasi-ribbon technology as the 1.7i but is somehow better? Designed for power amps delivering the goods into a 4 ohm load means exactly what?

I wonder if there are improvements in any of the speculative areas below:

Ability to play louder/square inch of panel
Better crossover topology
Better crossover implementation: no electrolytics or iron-cores, etc
Tighter control of panel resonances
Improved materials in the panels and adhesive

Anything else you can think of?

Not sure, but also heard both 3.7i s and 1.7s at the show and I like the LRSs better. I don't hear these have the same issue that caused me to buy MLs over the 3.7Is when I put together a new system a few years ago.

Can you characterize the differences?

It's a VIRTUAL channel unless stated otherwise.

History in Sound & Vision
1.Congratulations Magnepan.
2. Beautiful restoration of Apollo 11
Watched it on 17" B/W TV in July 1969.
June 2019 watched it on 4K HDR 65" TV
and listened through Magnepan LRSs...what a difference 1/2 century makes!
Didn't make Woodstock.

I spent a few songs switching out my speaker cables back and forth with my nephew between lrs and focals. boy is it hard to judge when my focals a good 6-10db louder. so obviously a fail scientific test. but the lrs have such huge depth and spaciousness, top notch. if you enjoy the 3d ish sound, the LRS can deliver it really well if setup well. I would appreciate pm's of some top notch recordings of 3d sound...or just post em. I have listened to most of scotts links and they do very well on lrs...just not something I can listen to for long :P
