Welcome to paradise

Almost forgot...Happy Anniversary Magnepan LRS-introduced last year at Axpona 2019.
Placed my order on April 14, 2019. Unboxed and setup on May 14, 2019.
After lots of great tips and advice from all you folks here, finally got them where I want them. Been a love affair ever since. Folks, just one more question...even though it's Valentines Day, you shouldn't feed chocolates to a speaker...probably would smear the sound...right???

Hi All,
One more thing....(yeah, right!)
Took this photo of my LRS Crossover.
Looks to be quality components.
Can anyone (josh359) share details?
Just curious.

I've got the 2x4 one, about $95. Have the preamp (an Emotiva PT-100) feeding the input, and the outputs going to power amps for the SMGc's and the sub (mono). I've programmed the miniDSP to sum the inputs from both preamp channels, plus I've tamed some of the hotness I felt was too much (after putting in total new tweeter foils) with some DSP work.

Works well, reliable piece of kit.

I read that typical subwoofers should not be used with LRS speakers. Only dipole is recommended. Is this the experience of LRS owners?

Excerpt from Stereophile Review on LRSs and Subwoofers:
https://www.stereophile.com/content/...speaker-page-2

"...The Little Ribbon Speaker played Chuck loud enough for me (88dB average/96dB peak, C-weighted). And Chuck's Chess-era "rock-it" attitude was definitely getting through. But every cell in my body cried out for more wallop and stronger bass.
This is when I realized that most rockers would want to use a subwoofer (or two): not big ones, just ones that play hard, tight, and fast. However! When the Tidal bot led me to a fine-sounding remastered version of rock-progenitor Fats Domino singing "I Want to Walk You Home" (from Fats Domino Jukebox: 20 Greatest Hits, 41.1/16 FLAC EMI/Tidal), I forgot all about subwoofers and wallop..."

I use a single 12" Hsu sub and after some trial and error placement, tuning 80Hz crossover works fine for my LRSs. As torii says..."ymmv".

I read that review. The comment I read was attributed to a person at Magnepan. It was quoted on the Planar Speaker Asylum forum.

It did seem like an odd statement to make. Good to know it is not written in stone.

2020 car season just about to begin. Cataract surgery coming up on Wednesday so I'll 'see' shortly thereafter if I can see again. SO do I buy a 2020 Crudillac CT6-V Blackwing that my local dealer just got in in pearl red over black or do I strive to find just the right old boat such as something like this?

Those 11 deals I had been working on since Oct all closed so something is going to happen. Decisions decisions.

Scotth3886,

Eight years ago, my missus had cataract surgery in both eyes. Of course, only one at a time. She was amazed at how well she could see colors again. So...that should help you 'see' the choices better, when shopping for your next 'boat'. When your all healed, do reward us here at avsforums with more of your wit and wisdom.
Best of luck to you

Lease is up on the Buick so I have to replace that anyway. BUT I do want another old yank tank, but it's gotta be the right one. I would have bought the 1960 Olds 98 (those are so big we should call it an Olds 99) had I noticed it in time. This seller somehow finds magnificent 50s and 60s luxury house boats and I want me one.

Will be trying WireWorld Oasis 8 speaker cables tomorrow. I have high hopes. I have their power cords (Electra 7s) and USB cables (Chris, that's the yellow USB cable I sent you), those are good. But I have never tried their speaker cables. Have you owned WireWorld speaker cables or interconnects, guys? Whadayathink?

That is interesting. If you like RCA quality that means their speaker cables are also good. Where do you buy obsolete models? At what sort of discounts?
Let me explain. I got this pair directly from WireWorld store on Amazon, delivered by Prime tomorrow. Cost? $324 for the pair of Oasis 8. If I like what I hear I wouldn't mind getting the previous Oasis 7 provided the discount is significant enough, like at least half. I doubt there is a night and day difference between an 8 and a 7. I would love to try their silver line up like the WireWorld Platinum Eclipse 8, but those cables are $44,500.00 a pair. There is no way!
So, is there a specific online retailer that has the previous models significantly discounted (how much, in %?) or you just look for them everywhere?

You are a life saver, thanks, I had no idea. Now all depends on the Oasis 8 arriving tomorrow. If they make any difference at all I will start hunting for higher model at a discount.

I have called companies before and just asked them if had anything I was looking for. ie. I called xlo and kimber back in the day and got deals on new product just by asking them...never hurts to ask. nobody pays retail anymore

Those 11 deals I had been working on since Oct all closed so something is going to happen. Decisions decisions.
Femto phaco or ultrasound and premium multi focal or standard lenses?

Don't understand your question, but if its eye related, HD lens.

Who is running a magnepan center channel versus running phantom center? I have been running phantom center for years. I have 20.7 and struggled to see how a CCR or CC5 placed below the screen would be able to perform better than my current setup. Unfortunately my local dealer dropped Magnepan and they never really had much of a selection in the first place for me to take home and try. What is your experience?

I think you're correct. I sure wouldn't run a physical center with dipoles.

I've run a phantom center most of the time, but never really dialed it in properly. There was a CC3 that would pop in and out of the system that didn't impress me, but I wanted to run more channels because it seemed like 'the right thing to do' for ht. For one movie I ran a DWM with it and that viewing of Sicario was an audio revelation. Dialog was crystal clear and full, intelligible even in the midst of a fire fight. I want to say that was with 1.6s, I'm not sure I had the 20s back then. Being lower than the screen wasn't a problem, though granted that screen is a bit too high. Due to upgraditis it's now a CCR in the main system, which feels better- not sure if it sounds meaningfully better yet, but I like knowing it has the ribbon.
If it doesn't bother you to not have physical speakers at all positions, and you're not too concerned with how the phantom center sounds far off center, then the phantom should keep on being fine. Since I'm a tinkerer and am usually up for trying new things I'd say it's worth trying the real thing if you can, but only with a DWM or other reinforcement. If you're close enough to me (Chicagoland) you could even borrow a set.

Guess what picture was hanging in my bedroom, opposite my bed, when I was a teenager? No, it wasn't a poster of Brook Shields or Cindy Crawford, nor was it a Lamborghini Countach or Ferrari F40. It was a huge poster of this GX635-DB.
Getting it. It will be a financial black hole, a money pit.
