I've got 7.1.4 and at the suggestion of various Atmos threads, I installed the front and rear Atmos speakers. It definitely adds a level of detail and immersion that I have never experienced before. While I don't have direct experience with just one set of Front Atmos speakers, I can tell you that having 4, 2 in front of the seating area and 2 behind, really spreads out the above sounds.

Soundtracks like Hacksaw Ridge, I felt like I was on the battle field with bullets zipping by around and above me. I was watching War for the Planet of the Apes and the scene where they were walking in the forest while it was lightly raining... I could hear the rain drops all around me but also hitting the leaves above... I got goosebumps!

I suspect that Hacksaw Ridge would probably sound fine with 2 front Atmos speakers but War for the Planet of the Apes would not sounds as convincing as the rain drops would be above but only in front... but to be honest, I find that the sides and rear are harder to pinpoint location detail generally speaking so ymmv.

I've got 3 x Mythos XTR 60 in front and 8 x In-wall RSS II for all my surrounds and Atmos. I'm considering upgrading the XTR 60s but we will see if the future budget allows...

What left and right sorrounds would you all get to go with a pair of st towers and mythos 10 center? I currently have a pair of gems but plan to use those as rear channels when I pick up new sorrounds. Let me know your thoughts

As a follow up

Just wanted to state that I have made a few minor changes to the set up. I was able to get onto the Oppo UDP-205 list and have added it into the system with a pair of MonoPrice Monolith R&L audio cables. The sound quality of this combination through the Marantz receiver to the STL's is really, really good. I played "Hang" from Matchbox 20's debut album through this system from the UDP-205 for several people and they have marveled at it. Time from Pink Floyd is "Make the hair stand up on your arm" good as well. For the first time in my life I am completely content with the system I have to play music and movies through. These speakers are really something else.

If it sounds and looks good, it sounds and looks good!!

Does anyone know if the Mythos Ten has been discontinued? They seem out of stock everywhere.

Looking at the DefTech website it is still current but like you I checked the net and it’s hard to find. Even on Amazon. It may be coming to being discontinued.

So there's that..

Wow. Even the floor standing speakers discontinued?! Showing everything as back ordered is a bit misleading. I guess they are not selling well anymore? Mythos speakers have been regarded as some of the best sounding speakers in the business for a very long time. So are they going to be exclusively bi-polar designs? I have three 9's across the front, with dual supercubes, gem XL's for surround and DI 5.5R in ceiling for Atmos. My setup sounds fantastic and plays as loud and hard as I want all while being superbly detailed and musical. I imagined some day they would finally upgrade the line with new drivers and I would upgrade my setup. I have always felt the Mythos line was the flagship in sound accuracy and design. There must be something new about to be released to freshen the line with a new series/flagship name. As they say.. End of an era.

The Legacy (discontinued) product page is a bit confusing but all of the Mythos speakers are listed there.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

I also have 3 Mythos 9's across my front stage with 2 Mythos XL's in the rear all wall mounted. It sounds amazing!

When I did my search for speakers several years ago I could not find a wall mounted speaker that even came close to the Mythos series.

I hope they come out with an upgrade of some kind that are similar and wall mountable.

Definitive Technology Mythos Series Thread

I was able to get three Mythos Ten speakers for front L/C/R channels just in time then. I’m not seeing them listed anywhere. I found them in an eBay auction on close-out.

I also got a couple Mythos Gem speakers for L/R surrounds and am planning on installing a couple DI 6.5R in-ceiling as Atmos channels. Should make for a nice family room 5.1.2 Atmos setup.

I might even add a second sub if I can track down another JL Fathom f110.

I wonder what the back story is in discontinuing them. They’re fantastic speakers.

Other than STL all other speakers were pretty old and behind times. I only regret that they cancelled STL - it is really good competitive speaker but probably did not sell well for $5000. Yeah first they killed OPPO and now STL and I own both of them they both are beautiful and truly high end. STS and etc - I do not really care - they should kill them anyway.

Source/Dac/Pre: OPPO-105
Fronts: Benchmark AHB2 -> DefTech Mythos ST-Ls
Surrounds: Parasound Halo A23 -> DefTech Mythos Gems

What on-wall speakers currently in production surpass the Mythos Ten (in the same price range)?

Looking online I am glad I didn't sell my spares. I have a pair of Mythos ST Towers, 2 pair of Gems and I think a CS3000 sitting as spares in case I blow something. I always keep an AV Receiver and a couple power amps in the spare bend too knowing how I can get outrageous at times pushing the limits.

Good hunting to those searching.

Front - Mythos ST-L, Center - Mythos 10 & 8
Side Surround - Gem XL
Back Surround - Gem XL

I got irked and gave my 5.0 Mythos system to a friend after explaining the circumstances. They've upgraded from television speakers and I'm not irked so win - win.

I might type 2K for 1080p.

I am using 4 PM1000s with 3 Mythos 10s across the front. Great match.

I recently tossed the Mythos STS SuperTowers into the list of contenders for my new HT set up. Others in there are the SVS Primes, SVS Pinnacles, and Goldenear Triton Sevens.

I'm curious of two things:
1) What center would you recommend with the Mythos STS towers? ($300-$600 range)
2) How do they stack up to the other speakers listed above?

I've tried combing through the hundreds of pages here for the answer to the first question but I figured it would be best to just flat out ask.

Thanks!

2-Channel: Rega RP-3, Bellari VP130, Cayin A-88T MK2, SVS Ultra Monitors

I’ve been through many of the Mythos Center’s. By far the Mythos 10 is the way I would go to match the STS Towers.

I have read and have seen others on here stating that the XL's are worse than the normal Gems because of the bass and frequency? Is this true?

To anyone else.

I am setting up my HT setup again that's been away in the closet for 8 years... I have my Mythos Ones for the floor standing speakers. Mythos 3 for the center channel. I currently have Promonitor 100 MKII and Promonitor 80 MKII but was thinking of replacing those with the first gen Gems... any thoughts on that or am I spending money for no reason. I like that the Gems have the spread for sound and in my case in the room I think that is actually going to be a good thing. Subwoofer is a Supercube III.

Just wanted to know if the Gems would sound better or perform better than the Promonitor 100 MKII/80MKII?

Thanks,
-Nigel

Haven't posted here in a long time. I am looking to setup another system with my Mythos STS's that I've had for awhile when I came across a good deal for the ST-L.

Has anyone made this jump? I know someone posted from the ST to ST-L. I am assuming it is a good deal better.

I was dead set on getting the 9060 towers and bought the 9060 center...and then this deal showed up along with the 9080 center...I have tried the Mythos nine, ten, 8080 center and back to the nine (had moved into a condo) all paired with the STS in the past. I guess I wonder what is best to pair with the ST-L. The 9080 is probably the answer...but I also see that Def Tech has a new line released with a new center that is not bi-polar...Wondering what to do, and as people have complained in the past it's a shame they never released a true matching center/surrounds for the ST-L.

EDIT: so likely I'll keep the 9080 center, sell the 9060 (sucks I opened it ) and sell the STS's. Just curious what the best path for center is given the current options out there as it may make sense to buy something different.

Thanks

Old thread!
I bought my Mythos system in 2012. They were on closeout and I got the 5 speakers plus SuperCube II subwoofer for $1,694. Eight years later, and they're all working and looking great. I have Mythos 1 as fronts, Mythos 3 as Center and Mythos 5 rears, all in aluminum.

I did recently move, and one of the speaker posts broke. Def Tech sent me replacement parts which worked just fine. I'm so glad I bought Definitive Technology speakers. Excellent value after all these years and their service has been fantastic.

I have a question about Def Tech front speaker considerations as well as placement.
Looking to complete 5.1.4 setup.
Already purchased the following:
Mythos Ten Center
SR-8040BP surrounds
4x RSL C34E in ceiling atmos
Sub: unknown (open to suggestions)

The room is 12x25, with tv viewing area being the rear half and approx 12x15. short ceilings, only 7-7.5 ft.
Use mix of DVR-Directv, sports, movie, games

For fronts I am debating between Mythos ST or STS SuperTowers.

1. Which would be better paired with the Mythos Ten Center?
2. Couch is on rear wall. How should I place SR-8040BP surrounds?
- rear wall, how high?
- side walls ?

3. In ceiling atmos RSL C34E's; how far in front of primary seating position?
4. Is center channel better below tv or above? Mythos Ten
- TV will be on a swing mount. Not sure I could mount center to TV.
- If it were above, it may need to be a few inches off center. deal breaker?

5. Sub recommendations appreciated
6. Receiver recommendations appreciated

Mythos 10 will go with either of your choices. STS have a smaller foot print. Both sound great. If price is right go ST. As far as surround placements you have to experiment with it since you are going to have ceiling speakers too. A rough quest is about 18 inches from the ceiling if you have 8 or 10 feet ceilings.

The center channel can go above or below the TV. My personal preference is under. That way it doesn’t grab the main focus of the front part of the room.

Definitive Technology:Front Height - Mythos Gem XL
Front - Mythos ST-L, Center - Mythos 10 & 8
Side Surround - Gem XL
Back Surround - Gem XL
Sub - Supercube Ref, SVS SB13 Ultra, SVS SB16 Ultra
There can never be enough music

Only $100 more for the ST over the STS.
Low ceilings (basement), only 7 feet.

Definitely get the ST then. 10-12 inches from the ceiling for the surrounds is my suggestion.

Any suggestions for ST setup? I got a Denon AVR x4500h.
My current sub is an older 8", cerwin vega.
On the ST towers, do you recommend using the LFE?
Likely will upgrade next year. Considering SVS or HSU.

The LFE will give you more control with the sub volume level but will sound the same using it or not. There’s really no sound quality difference other than volume.

As far as the sub, the SVS is a good choice. You get a lot for the money. Plus if you don’t like it they will let you return it, no questions asked.
