Cool!!! As the tweeter is offset to one side on the AA+, Dennis recommends them to be farthest apart so to the outside which works well in my setup. Looking forward to hearing how the AA+ does for a center on its side.

(However, the MTM would still blend well with the bookshelves despite not having the AA+ tweeter.)

So, I decided to get 3 bookshelves first and once I'm sure they are right for me I can get another pair for surround duty. I am aiming to have them shipped after the Thanksgiving weekend so I can make the most of the 14 day trial.
I have the older New AA's(with the cheaper tweeter) and the MTM center. Love them! Only thing i would ever replace them with is the BMR's. Im saving.

I was reading an old review (3 years old) of the AA bookshelves on Gamestop forum and they mentioned it is based on the Dayton BR-1 kit, which has a reputation for having filmsy grilles that might break if you take them off.

Is there any truth to this? How sturdy are the grilles on the current AA+ bookshelves?

Mine seem ok. Have taken them off a three or four times and nothing broke. Now Dennis did suggest not to lift the speaker by the grill so just make sure you have your fingers under the wood and not on the grill or just grab them by the sides.

Thanks, sounds like it's not a problem as long as you are careful.

On a separate note, was the previous AA a modded Pioneer BS-22? Current is modded Dayton BR-1? Just trying to make sense of the reviews.

BTW, I have already placed my order for 3 AA+ bookshelves today. Just reading some reviews out of curiosity.

The pioneers were called the " Affordable Accuracy Monitor" and those were 2 models ago. The last model was called the "New Affordable Accuracy Monitor" and was the BR-1 kit with a modified crossover. I have those and i just love them. Currently he is selling The New Affordable Accuracy Plus Monitor. This has the Br-1 cabinets and woofer(incredible for its price), but has an upgraded Morel tweeter with a new crossover. The grills are not that thick and sure appear to be a little weak, but i have taken them off many times and they are still perfect. I cant imagine you not being super happy with your purchase.

Right--the mini's will exit stage left when all of the Parts Express cabinets are gone. They aren't making any more. I don't have any replacement in mind.

Dennis, could you remind us again which cabinets are leaving and which you have still have a supplier for?

In other words, which products are on the chopping block, and which are likely to remain available? Are the AA+'s going away when you run out of those cabs as well? Are the BMRs and Philharmonitors still safe?

Chop chop for the New Philharmonitor and the Mini's. I'll be down to three models--AA+, BMR with the rectangular piano black cabinets or a Salk custom cabinet, and the Phil 3's with Salk cabinets.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like everyone better get 'em while you can! Selfishly, I'm glad the AA+ and BMRs are sticking around.

That leaves quite a hole in the lineup - no more 2-way RAAL speaker.

Someone, source some cabinets!

i get the feeling , with less choices in his stable , Mr. Murphy may well be concentrating on the future of the aa+ more than in previous times.. who knows we may see another significant upgrade at some point...

I'm just trying to fill existing voids in the current market--inexpensive speakers with deep bass capability, near-full range 3-ways for less than $1,500, and full range speakers with a RAAL tweet for less than $4,000. The AA+ was supposed to be a small upgrade from the regular AA that would only require a small mod to the pre-wired crossovers. When I had to drop the assembled Xovers due to cost increases that would make the base AA non-competitive, I decided to keep the AA+ alive and hand wire everything. I didn't expect to sell very many given the competition in the $300 range, but now I seem to be spending most of my time wiring AA+ crossovers. I'm really not trying to concentrate on the AA+, it just sort of happened. I would much rather box up BMR's, but for some reason there seems to be more demand for a $290 speaker than a $1,350 one. Go figure.

I sent an email yesterday about this question but also wanted to ask here.

Since I sit the equivalent of one seat to the right of dead center between the main speakers (which are just under 2m from my ears), I was advised by some here to have the tweeter for the single AA+ on the right when I lay it horizontally...

And since each AA+ pair has one tweeter offset to the left and the other to the right...

For the single AA+ I use horizontally as the center, would it be beneficial to have it be the one with the tweeter offset the the left (when vertical) so that the tweeter is a bit higher up when layed on its right side?

(My current center is placed with the tweeter maybe 3-6 inches below ear level and the mains have the tweeter much closer to ear level.)

Thanks

(Also, quite excited about having a speaker setup with AA+ bookshelves all around.) 🙂

Go figure.
i tell ya, after listening to lots of speakers in the $300 range , there are some good choices right now.. i can't decide if the mini is a worthwhile move for me or not , but i sure want to hear one of your creations in the budget realm..i can understand why the aa's aren't your priority(let it be known that i appreciate your efforts to offer affordable quality hardware) , if i had a choice the bmr is where i would land ..maybe i'll just save up for a couple months, it certainly would be worth the money , my only decision is if i can justify the outlay ...

I just ordered an F12G so I could report back later and let you know. I have no idea how long shipping will take though, not to mention the time to get placement correct, etc. Basically, you shouldn't hold your breath.

For music, I have not found it neccessary to use a subwoofer, the scanspeak woofer can hit mid 30hz...so for my classical, classic rock and a few other genras, no need for a subwoofer. Now, I did have them in my theater for awhile, paired with my outlaw LFM-1 and the sound was excellent (and crossover set at 60hz).

Set up #1: EMP e5Ti, e5Ci, and EMP e5Bi surrounds, Outlaw LFM1 Plus sub, SVS NSD SB12 sub, Marantz Slimeline 1504 AV receiver
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and EMPtek10i10i sub, Denon 1910 AV receiver
Set up #3: Philharmonics- BMR in a 2.0 system, music only, Yamaha RXV-363 AV receiver

FWIW my long term plan isn't to have this be the sub's permanent home. I actually plan to park it in my main system with a pair of tower speakers. But I will certainly at least give it a try with the BMRs, if for no other reason than curiosity.

Why the F12G over the F12 I might ask?

Honestly, because I know myself well enough that if I'd gotten the F12 I'd always wonder if I was missing out on something by not paying a bit more for the "better" driver. (I put better in quotes because I don't know if it's actually better in the sense that I'd be able to hear a difference.) If nothing else I'm paying a bit more to assuage my own insecurities. A model consumer!
