They don't compete on price, but they (sort of) do on specs. 3-way stand mount. I'd guess the midrange dispersion won't be as wide as the BMR, possibly hurting off-axis response, but otherwise they look good and imaging could be better with the Uni-Q driver. I'm not sure if they are worth the $600 premium but they seem like a good speaker. Similar profile, gloss black box (other options are available).
I'm not sure they do spec as good as the BMR. They're 6 db down at 38hz and 3 db down at 52 hz. The BMRs are + / - 2 db at 34 hz. So even with in room response helping out the KEFs, the BMRs in the same room should have lower extension. The only thing I can see is that the KEF may image better with the UniQ. I would think definitely NOT worth the extra $600.
They measure well: http://us.kef.com/media/doc/r2018_whitepaper_en.pdf

Yes, their -3dB point is 58Hz which is not great, but on and off axis response is great. Imaging should be best in class, though there has to be some tweeter distortion with this design because its waveguide is a moving midwoofer cone. How much I don't know, but probably more than the RAAL.

I would tend to agree that the BMR Philharmonitor is a very good deal in comparison. Another point in their favor is that Dennis can make you a third for center duty. The KEF R3s appear to be sold in pairs.

thanks , my question, i guess i wasn't clear, are they back in stock, i heard mid January , but haven't heard whether they actually came in yet , my guess is the govt shutdown might be screwing up the works( customs isn't working right now on a full scale and stereo equipment isn't exactly a high priority)

no problem.. my dynaudio emit m10 demo at the dealer is on hold for that very reason, thank goodness i have no need to hurry , i'm listening to wharfedale 10.1s on that system now .. not exactly slumming it ... did i see in your set ups that you have the bmr's being driven by a yamaha entry level avr? that makes me optimistic that either the dyns or aa+'s will be easily driven by mine...

Lee a lot of that will depend on your listening habits. That is, if you like to play it very loud, then you might run into some problems w/a 4 ohm speakers. I have never been one to play at absurd levels. Do like to rock out every now and then though. For me, it is much about SQ than SPL. Kenny Wayne Sheppard's Blue On Black has to sound just right for me.

Cheers,

Phil

i never was one to see if i could blow up amps or tweeters , i stay more concerned with sq .. i don't buy into the " you have to have better than an avr" for sq theory, *but* i know that some amps are a bit better sounding (i don't hear a huge difference when i have a/b'd though).. it just made me feel a bit better that somebody else runs a music 1st set up with an entry level avr..

Like I've said several times on this thread before - there is nothing better out there (well, I haven't heard everything out there...) than the RAAL tweeter for female vocalists. Amazing.

unfortunately, since the tweeter are imports, they may be affected by the government shutdown!

Yes, I don't listen to music at a really loud level, but my AVrec drives the BMRs plenty loud without sweating!

Yes, the Madison Sound website is a little confusing as they list it as "textile dome tweeter with an aluminum face plate. Good catch, either way, that is a pretty pricey tweeter in that speaker!

Pricey indeed. And in fact too pricey. When I launched the AA+ I thought i was going to be able to obtain a substantial quantity discount on the Morels. As it turned out, the discount only applied to sales at a retail price. I've been losing my shirt on the AA+, and to a lesser extent, the original AA with the Dayton tweeter. When you add to that the hours and hours it takes to hand-wire the crossovers and assemble the components, the AA line just isn't practical. So I've had to bring the AA's to a screeching halt. I wish I had had an automatic braking system much earlier. It's a shame because I really haven't heard as good an all-around product in that price class. But as it turns out, they were too good to be true. I apologize to any prospective purchasers.

I'm not sure very many people would want to take it on if they saw how complex it was. And they would have to pay retail for the parts.

Oh no!!! These speakers are fabulous and perhaps a price adjustment is warranted.

Do you have parts for a few more as I'd really love to get enough for a center and two surrounds. Have built a few crossovers and speakers in my day. Let me know. Thanks.

@Dennis Murphy

Maybe consider still offering the AA’s but increasing the price respectively. I think that your speakers are still extremely well performers in a price bracket two, maybe even three times your asking price.

I’m sure people would pay the extra.

Maybe consider still offering the AA’s but increasing the price respectively. I think that your speakers are still extremely well performers in a price bracket two, maybe even three times your asking price.

I’m sure people would pay the extra.
Nope, because he does these - http://philharmonicaudio.com/Mini-Monitor.html - at $700/750. Why spend 600 when you can get better at 700?

Phil BMR Question

For those that have the Phil BMR's is it fair to say that these have a sweet spot when played louder? I've had a pair for a few weeks now and while I'm still trying to play around with placement my general sense is that when they are played at lower volume they sound almost boxy or thin. (Sorry if I don' thave the lingo down...) When played at moderate and higher levels these really sing and sound tremendous. These are powered from NAD 368 and music is FLAC or Tidal. Also, do these tend to have a narrower sound stage?

Is that consistent with other's experience?

Thanks!

Mark

the mini's are going away soon though .. as are the larger 2 way monitors , as i remember his supplier is no longer offering the curved cabinets he uses ..so everything under $1300 is gone or is soon to go bye -bye.. i hope, but i am not holding my breathe , that he will offer a new speaker at the $300-1000 range .. i get the feeling Dennis works a bit harder than most of us realize and is "gearing down" a bit...i salute him for the work he has done..

Well I was just stating how well they perform (Like $600-$900 speakers) but I would not pay that much for them. I would however pay the extra that it costs to get the morel tweeter and however much Dennis would like extra for his impeccable crossovers.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

Not sure how you make money on the BMRs either!

Fantastic price/value on those as well.
