What is the F3 of that speaker, ie., the point after which the bass output begins to drop significantly?

Yep. I can envision selling my BMRs one day to go after something like the Salk Song3 BeAT.

I think when you see the driver quality and price of some of the DIY kits, it really helps one appreciate the quality and value that Dennis was offering...I know others have made this point already, but I think it bears repeating...the AA speaker really exemplifies this:
Parts Express BR-1 kit, $194/pr, two Morel MDT32S 1" Silk Dome tweeter at 84 dollars EACH and custom built crossovers...even with volume discounts, you try to find the profit margin there!?

Definitely gonna have to agree on those Phil 3's. They've been on my list for a couple years now... I wonder if I can convince the wifey to let us put speakers in yet another room! I have the BMR's currently; I was hoping to pick up more for a full BMR home theater but oh well

Until you go full profile! Baby got back! And she can drop it low, too.

Jim and I worked out arrangements to get my Phil 3s back into production. Perhaps as early as tomorrow, my cabinets will be back into the flow for their last sealer coat(s) and top coat! Very excited! Its been almost four months since I ordered with Dennis. Jim says they should be out the door by the end of April.

Am very curious how many more are in a holding pattern.

Funnily enough, they're not THAT much bigger than the speakers I have now (Rega RS10). Only a bit deeper (18" vs 24"). To be honest, the only thing that really kept me from getting the Phil 3's a couple years ago was the wifey... so far the current speakers have reigned supreme in WAF.

But I'm pretty smitten with that two-tone on the Phil 3's. Going to have to word it very eloquently to get her to say yes lol.

Indeed!
The only thing more heartbreaking than the wait was learning about Dennis.
Still wishing him well and hoping we hear from him soon! *fingers-crossed
I'm supremely grateful for Jim's role in working with Dennis, then with me, to keep this alive. Honored, and beyond grateful, that I may have one of the last few pairs of Phil 3s to be built. (I do hope they live on beyond Dennis' retirement!) When I started speaker shopping last year, I realized quickly I should be looking for my "forever speakers." My patience was rewarded here.

It was painful looking again for different speakers as I thought there was a chance that this would all fall through. Special thanks to @Rick Craig for talking to me about his gear! Trying to find an affordable near-full-range replacement for the Phil 3 is hard on a budget. If you've got the DIY bug like I do, his kits are very tempting. I am fond of the Illuminismo. But doing full towers as my first build was a challenging step to even begin considering, especially without any test gear!

Hi Bluesdaddy
Since i dont expect to get the BMRs anymore, and i finally have a job with extra income. I was looking at getting a pair of song3's myself. I see you might someday be looking at the song3 BEATs. Why not just the song3's? Do you think the Audio Tech mid is that much better? Just curious, i think from your past posts we are on the same page in many aspects of this addiction.

I think it's here on AVS on this thread. Dennis was working on the original version with the Fountek tweeter and (I think) he or someone else called it a monitor so I simply called it the Philharmonitor and it caught on.

(I don't have time right now to search this entire thread but it should be early.)

I'm eager to hear thoughts on this, too. I can't offer an opinion myself on the driver selection, but I will say, for the cost, the Song 3 is hard to beat. To me, the upgrade I am most interested in for the price is the Song 3A, as I have heard nothing but amazing things about that Accuton Mid. If price wasn't an object, the Song 3 Encore would be a strong contender... though once you get into that price point, I'd have to weigh heavily the pros and cons of that and the Veracity HT3. Good thing I'm not in the market right now. Or rich. Oh, and not interested in being divorced... I'm one speaker conversation away from the couch as it is!

It was based on Jim Salk saying something to the effect that the BEaTs were the best sounding iteration of the Song tower yet and that some of the crossover design done for it was filtering down to other models (I think I'm remembering that correctly). I figured when you're already looking at spending $3300 or so, what's another $1200? ;-) Plus, the model they have up on their website is freakin' gorgeous.

In this post Jim says:

Quote:
A while back, we were looking for a new midrange driver and Per Skanning designed this one for us. We did not use it at the time, but tried a one-off model for a customer at a later date. We loved the musicality of this driver so much, we eventually released this as a standard model and called it the Song3 BeAT (Be = beryllium tweeter, AT = Audio Technology). After spending a good deal of time listening to all versions of the Song3, we very much preferred the BeAT version overall and decided to use that technology in this new model.
That's really what got me looking at them. IF I WAS going to sell my BMRs and buy towers, I'd take a serious, hard, look at them. $5K is probably the max I'd even think about spending on an LR (and I can hardly believe I'm saying that now). But I'm still in love with my BMRs and when I bought them I didn't upgrade to Magnepan 1.7i because of the size and these probably aren't as tall, but they're obviously a LOT deeper.

That Encore is a beast, though! 25Hz extension with that 9.5" SB Acoustics Satori, and an extra 25# of wood and driver per cabinet (97 pounds / 11.5"W x 17"D x 42.5"H). The 3A and the BeAT are the same in cabinet dimension and weight (72 pounds / 9.5"W x 14.5"D x 44.5").

Curious how the Mids compare and contrast between those three models: Accuton, Audio Technology, and Eton... The tweeter just shifts from the faithful 64-10 to the Satori Beryllium.

Good News....I guess....for all who own BMRs, Phil3s, Sierra2s and various Salks.....the price for all of the wood finished Salks (not the standard black or white painted) just went up $3-400...making all of our products worth more.
