Do it. A pair of my 530s is on my PC desk as we speak. Was playing them for a while about 20 minutes ago.

This....is the land of "why not".

Has anyone tried using these speakers in an AT set up and are you happy with the results?

Allen,

Is Spandex screen better than SilverTicket screen?

What is the best place to buy Spandex AT screen for a 2.35 aspect ratio? SpandexWorld?

Thanks.

My spacing is 9' Left- Right,Center speaker is centered between the two. Only thing I might change is to put some insulation on the wall behind the speakers from end to end. Otherwise the sound is very good.

Thank you skypop. I will also cross mine at 80hz. But I will play music in "Direct Referential Mode" which will not use separate subwoofers and 590 as full range. In that case, does it make sense to plug the ports? TIA.

I have no experience with spandex screens that just seems to be the material of choice for diy screens. I will tell you I have seen some very good pictures from some.

After a few months now with my 530s, which I bought during that last sale, I continue to be impressed with their performance with both music and movie/TV material. My Revel M16s are still just a touch thicker and full-bodied but their no-EQ performance doesn't bring quite the same air to music or movies, likely due to differing performance at the higher ends of the treble range. I love them my Revels and they make a great pair with the 530s but man, I'm really glad I bought these. They're worth the retail price but at $300 they're an absolute steal. I'd love to have any need (or space) for the 580s or 590s so I could justify buying and trying them.

The best way to know is to listen to music that you know well, and check for thicker slower bass response. Whichever way it sounds better to you is the way to listen, these speakers are dynamic and quick in the Bass,so you'll be able to hear the difference.

Thank you Skypop. Will do.

A general question on speakers behind an AT screen.

I have 11' width on my planned HT room. I am planning to use a 125" to 128" 2.35:1 AT screen with a width of 124". This setup will leave about 6" gap on both sides. The depth between the screen and the front wall (to install LCR, SW1 and SW2) will be 36".

The question is, what provision should be made to access the back of the screen to deal with the speakers. Do we people usually remove the screen to access the speakers behind it or do they have some mechanism to access via a side entrance?

Thanks.

That falls into room design and choices for access to the speakers. I have a door that opens into the area behind my Screen, but I can still take the screen off the mounts to swap out speakers if needed. If you have the space for an accessible space with a door on the side that's great,if you don't than plan on taking the screen down to work on the speakers which shouldn't happen much unless you blow one up! 😎

Thank you Skypop. I like the idea of door. I will explore that with my contractor.

JBL recommends 20" between side walls and the speakers as well as 6 to 10 feet apart. For a better imaging, I would like to have as much space between the speakers. Does it make sense to reduce the gap between the speaker and the side wall to get better distance between the speakers?

Hard to answer that, alot of it is how it sounds to you. I would say if you want to move it closer to a side wall, than toe the speaker in a little to help with possible side wall reflections, just make sure that you toe the left and right speaker the same amount. This is where having access to your speakers without having to move your screen comes in handy because you would want to judge the sound with the speakers how they will be used.

Since you asked specifically about what others are doing I will share what I am doing. I have a door being framed for access to the left speaker from back. For right side I guess I will need to access by removable panel from front.

yeah i bought a couple 530 pairs at $300. i just dont see the need to upgrade from there after like 20 or so pairs of speakers ive owned.

if the 580s go on sale for $259 again though, that will "probably" be my last speaker purchase ever. who knows, this hobby is ridiculous

If your speakers are crammed in somewhere that interacts poorly with the ports unplugged, then yeah, I could see the plugs being preferable.

Mine are close to a wall, but I didn't like them with the plugs. However, I like the bass a lot better after using Audyssey XT32. I've also got the MultEQ app, so I only use Audyssey for frequencies under about 250 Hz. I also used recommendations from someone in one of the Audyssey threads about how to bump up my subwoofers 5 dB in a way that integrates smoothly with the mains and satellites.

Yeah, they are less than a foot away from the wall and each in a corner. Thankfully the front baffles don't have any obstruction or boundary.

I use Audyssey XT32 as well, but I'm a couple of years before the Audyssey app was a thing.

So what was that sub advice??

Unfortunately, the sub advice requires the app. Posts 6590 and 6591 in the thread below, if you're curious:

If anyone else tries this and gets frustrated with tweaking their sub's target curve, let me know. I came up with an easier way to accomplish the same end result.
