Heads up. Harman.com has Studio 580 and 590 and 550p sub for sale. Great sale actually. 590 is $475.

I just purchased the 590's today. I'm hoping to find a Studio 520C for a center but Harmon/JBL were sold out of them as of last week. The JBL tech I spoke with on the phone today suggested the Studio 225C as a match but i think he was just trying to sell me something. Are there any members with the 590's that could recommend a matching center that works for them? Otherwise i will be keeping an eye out for a 520C.

Matching is very important. Wait for it. Until then use phantom center and sit in the middle. Your receiver will construct a center channel using your L/R speakers. Keep watching Harman' ebay site as well as the regular site for the sale. As recently as a month ago, they had the 520c on sale for $180. I paid $250 for a refurb in December.

I pulled the trigger too and I'm in for a pair of 580's.

The hard question now, do I move the 530's to the rear or move them to my 2.1 setup in my office and move the Wavecrest HVL-1 (currently in my office) to the rears?

Thoughts?

My Simple 5.1 setup
Mains JBL Studio 580's | JBL 520C | Surrounds Wavecrest HVL-1 |SVS-PB12NSD |SVS-PB2000
Denon AVR-3300X|Outlaw Model 5000 5Ch Amp|

i had to make the same decision
IMO 530s are a waste as rears, such good speakers only to be used as ambient sound... if i can find another set of 530s on sale ill use them for rears lol
i moved them for a 2.2 set up in my living room, hopped on that 520c deal and turned it into a 3.2

just curious, why did u guys choose the 580s over the 590s?

found the center for regular price

I use the 590's for my LCR,and 580's for my Back Surrounds. I'd have 580's for side surrounds also but than I'd have to rearrange my room for them to fit,and that's not happening.

I agree!, The 530's are now in my 2.1 office setup.

I went with the 580's because the 590's are MASSIVE. Don't get my wrong, the 580's are not small but any means but they are smaller. I have them in 15x24 ft room, which is a good size, but I have dual 12 in. ported SVS subs, a 65 inch TV and now two 580's all up front. If I went with the 590's I think it would be crowded.

New 590 owner

Hello all. I've been lurking for awhile now and thought I'd finally post...because today I've just brought home a pair of 590s.

After viewing all the posts showing the arrival of damaged units, I'll admit I was a bit a nervous while awaiting my shipment. So, when checking out the shipping status today and seeing they'd arrived at the local UPS distribution center a day earlier than expected, I immediately contacted UPS to see if could pick them up myself rather than wait for them to be delivered (damaged?) in the big brown truck. After a few hour wait, I got word back that I could do just that, so I dragged by 14 year old son with me to go find the the UPS warehouse. Both boxes were securely strapped to a wooden palate, so we had to first extract them from that before squeezing them into my jeep. It was a tight fit, but as my son said, it was "meant to be" and it all worked out perfectly.

The plan is for these to do double duty as LR fronts for a future home theater ( a basement project still in planning stages) as well as for high quality music listening. I'll post more on that project in the future as I'll be seeking input in a number of areas.

Cheers for now.

Alan

Congrats. I got them exactly a year ago. They take a few days to break in. So don't get disappointed if they don't sound great right a way.

Grats! Give them as much (high current) power as you can so they can sing.

How long did it take for the break in ? About 2 weeks back, I purchased 590 for my LCR duties. So far I like it. Coming from L890 and LC2 for front stage behind spandex AT screen.

Thanks

I would say about a week. I was comparing A/B to my 12 year old Klipsch RF5 and they were not that different. I was starting to have doubts but then about a week later it stated to sound better.

Thank you !
I will post my impressions once I give a decent break in period. I am also running L890 towers side by side (that I bought from a criagslist deal last year). I love both 590s and L890s. Just not willing to let go of L890 + LC2 yet. Perhaps, find another dedicated listening room and move the L890s there. One thing I did notice running 590 as a center is that 590 has bigger and larger presence when compared to LC2.

Cheers
Suresh

So I watched Sing this weekend....the Studio 5 front stage makes for such terrific music (and movie!) reproduction with the fidelity of Dolby Atmos...

Hey everyone,

I just received a pair of 590's for L/R, and a single 580 for Center Channel. All speakers arrived undamaged thankfully. I've been reading this thread and was a bit worried. I spent most of last night swapping out my old B&W 604s3's and LCR-60 for them. I also had to move all my equipment to a different rack since I now have a floor stander as a center. Took me about 4 hours to get it operational. I still need to extend some of the cables so that I can hide them as necessary. These things were so much bigger than I anticipated. They dwarf my B&W's. I've attached a pic for your viewing pleasure.

I have a pair of 590s and the 520 center. When I received my 590s I had the opposite reaction as to the size of the speakers. I have a pair of Polk SRS/SDA 2.3 speakers in my music only system and they dwarf the 590s.

Love the 5 series speakers. Hope you find them a nice change from your B&Ws.

Very cool, man. Thanks for the picture. Considering how much I love my 590\520C combo, I would love a tower as center. Might need to just hold out until the next time I can get a cheap 580...

Anyway, hope you enjoy. Do you have surrounds or just running 3.2 there?

Right now, I'm still using my B&W 602s1's as surrounds. If I find a really cheap pair of 530's, I may swap, but they would have to be less than $150 for the pair.

I am now officially a believer! These speakers are amazing. I initially thought these pretty good, but not amazing, but then I re-ran the Audessey setup on my Marantz and WOW. I must have done something wrong the first time I ran it.

These speakers are so lifelike. The 1.5k crossover frequency in the horn is genius. Norah Jones voice leaps right out of the speakers and suddenly she's right there in the room. It's Glorious.

That is how I feel too. I had Diana Krall in my room last night . Even the 520c does voices so well. The sacd I have of Diana krall uses the center channel for most of the vocals.

I have a pair of 590's that I use for my FR and FL. I also recently bought a 520C for my center. I can't find the 530's anywhere online. What would be a good set of surround and rear speakers?

Have you thought about building a pair yourself using diysoundgroup.com designs?

Good point - if I had the time, I would have gone down that path for sure, but I am in the middle of moving continents (as in, moving back to India), so looking for turn key solution :-)

For reference, I have Polk RM8's as my surrounds right now and I have an extra pair of RM7's (which I was considering using for rears)...

I've been using JBL L820s for surrounds and backs. They mount on the wall and keep up with the 590s pretty well. the 530s seemed like they would take up too much space on the side walls.

I see. I can't seem to find them in stock anywhere (checked most of the usual online retailers). Would JBL Studio 210's work? Or, I have heard good things about Fluance ABVP2. I wonder if it's ok to mix & match...

I googled and came up with a pair on ebay and a couple of other sites. The 210's look good, but I've never heard them.
There are other brands that may work OK, but I wouldn't be familiar with anything else.

I changed out Klipsch RF5, RC7 to JBL 590 and 520c for the fronts and center. But I am still running Klipsch rs35 and insignia bookshelves for the surround and surround backs. Haven't had much problem. One day I would like to get a match in the back as well. One day i would like to upgrade to atmos as well.

Thanks again for the input - very helpful. I ended up buying a pair of RSL CG3 bookshelfs to go with RSL C34E's that I bought for the atmos setup.
