If I was getting a setup for a larger room, I'd probably grab Refs and call it done... I'm not a man for faff, as I'm too indecisive (you can see that here already) and over-agonise on decisions. Easier to just grab good stuff and call it a day. That being said, I think Ref 1's would be a little monolithic for nearfield usage, lol.
The Ref 1's actually aren't that much bigger than the R300's. They are quite a bit deeper and heavier, but the front baffle is pretty similarly sized.

Here's a picture of mine....and BTW, I think they'd be KILLER nearfield monitors. I'd totally do it.

Stunning speakers, in every way!

I just don't think many folks could use them in a desktop setup the way I can use my LS50's. These aren't nearly as deep, and can perform well close to a wall especially when integrated well with a sub. Those Reference One and similarly, R300 seem to work their very best with plenty of space around them and no sub. Yes, you can have plenty of space behind them and next to them and still be near-field, but most near-field applications are tighter quarters. Recording studios are a good example of a near-field application, though most of them need active speakers.

KEF R500, R200C, R100, R50, SVS SB2000 sub, NAD T758v3 AVR, LG UP875 4K BlueRay, Samsung UN55JU6500F 4K LED TV, KEF M500 headphones, Sony CDP-CE500 CD changer. Office: NAD M10, KEF LS50, KEF Kube 10b, E.A.T. C-Major TT w/Ortofon Quintet Blue cart.

Yeah, as I mentioned in a previous post, I couldn't have a neat desk setup with R300s or Ref 1's as they'd be too huge, desk would have to be built around speakers, not the other way around. I want to prefer the LS50s to give me that greater flexibility in what I can do with the whole of my desktop setup.

If I went Ref 1's I'd have a studio setup with the desk in the middle of the room and the speakers way behind it lmao.

Hi there,

I just found this thread and was wondering if any of you KEF LS50 owners could help me: I bought used drivers on ebay but I can't find the crossover section of the tweeter anywhere. Do any of you happen to know the schematics?

Best regards

Did you say, you bought ls50 drivers eBay?

I wanted to buy one to replace mine. But I had to send back my old defective driver in order to get the new one.

Yeah but in a private auction. I think the guy wanted to get his enclosures painted by a professional and the parcel service lost them. So he sold the drivers.

I'd bet the reason KEF wanted you to send the bad one in before they'd replace it is they wanted to be sure you were getting the exact same version, assuring best chance of having matching speakers. There are always little incremental changes in speakers. Most often it's the crossover, because the electronics manufacturer my discontinue a particular component and replacements with the exact same value may not act the same. Things like that.

I would always prefer to get replacement parts from KEF. Buying on eBay you're never guaranteed the product is what is presented, condition can be unknown. Sure it's going to cost more, but worth it for myriad reasons.

Think what I'll do for now is just use the LS50s for another week before switching back to the R300s and seeing what I feel about them. I just listen to random new music a lot (but add good ones to a playlist that I'll run on the R300s too) rather than focusing too much on the same stuff. Since these are at the desktop they're being played most of the day and so the 100+ hour burn in will be easily reached by the end of next week.

Should have a fair analysis of them then. Can think about trying out a sub after I guess.

I just bought a pair of LS50 and need some help with finding a nice but good value amp. As I am based in Japan, I have easy access to Onkyo/Yamaha, etc. I will be using it in a small apartment.

What do you guys think about Marantz NR1609? It claims to do:
Power Output (6 ohm, 1 kHz, 10% 1ch Drive) 100 W

Not sure if it can deliver 100W to each channel?

Appreciate any suggestion/feedback.

It might not deliver the full 100W but it should do 80 no problem, which is more than enough for a small apartment.

Weird sound on startup?

Hi, another question and possible problem with my KEF LS50 Wireless. When I turn them on, sometimes I get a weird noise from the left speaker. Normally I get a little *click* from the left speaker but sometimes I hear also something that sounds like a violin screech. Just for less than a second. They still sound good, but maybe it is the beginning of something worse? Recognizable for someone?

I used to have those clicks when powering on/off my LS50Ws on the older firmware. Do you have the latest one installed on them? Haven't noticed them since the update or maybe they're just not as audible.

Updated the firmware this weekend but still have the *click* sound from the left speaker on startup. Think it is a normal hardware thing? I had something similar on my old receiver. The screech sound I didn't have till now.

Hi guys, I have had my LS50's for a couple of months but just noticed something now. One of the sides of the speaker doesn't seem to be flush. I'm posting pictures of the same speaker on both sides (edit, I cannot post links as I am a new member) anyone else noticed this on their speakers? I never dropped them or played crazy loud. In any case they sound normal to me but I really don't have anything to compare them with. If I press the front panel it does not move at all.

On the power up thing, when I turned them on I have a "click" on my left speaker, I take it that its a normal reaction to receiving power.

My LS50 passive speakers aren't perfect flush where the front baffle meets the cabinet either. Manufacturing tolerance. As long as it's properly sealed and rigid, looks and sounds OK, that's all I can ask.

I'm a VERY happy LS50 owner!

I'm not fretting too much as it seems rock solid, I really cant budge it at all. Just wondering if they got dropped one too many times during shipping.

Highly unlikely. If shipped in their original box with all the high-impact Styrofoam cushioning and wraps, they're VERY well-protected.

The only part that is flush for mine is the bottom (cause you'd want it flush to put on stands). The sides and top 'just out' a little. It's fine.

Has anyone paired LS50 with HSU VTF-2 mk5? I have 3 LS50 (LCR) and would like to pair it with vtf2 which should fit perfect for my room. I read it somewhere that HSU might not be fast enough for LS50 but I doubt that would be true. Any experience/recommendation? This is for 50 music/50 HT usage.

On that note, I wonder how that HSU one would compare to something like Kube12b?

Good and other.

The Hsu subs will hit lower with more authority for the LFE in movies. For music, the Kube 12b will be (arguably) nicer-sounding because it's DSP effected by a 3-position switch gives you options on bass response. I've used it to "dial-in" my Kube 10b in my office, with spectacular results. It will not, however, hit hard below 25hz or so.

Not much going on here, huh?

An update: Had the demo unit of the LS50s for just over a month. In that period, I haven't once been bothered enough to take the R300s back out and compare them; so I didn't. Laziness? Sure, but it says wonders.

If I have no desire to compare them, then the choice is obvious - sticking with the LS50s. Boxed up the demo units and asked for a brand new pair to be shipped out to me.

In the meantime, I've dug out my HE400i's I bought a while ago and never used until now (as I was fine using the LS50s for everything). Using headphones again after literal years of foregoing them for speakers is weird indeed. I forget just how much soundstage these things can have (nothing compared to the LS50 of course), plus how 'in your face' the subtle details that speakers can hide due to simple proximity is something else!

Tephnos,
Belated welcome to the community. Thanks for the report on your LS50s. I too was on the fence and made the same decision, although I didn't have custody of either pair when I ordered my first pair of LS50s.

And I totally understand going back to headphones. Since last Nov. my rig has been in storage while we relocate and refurbish a new to us home. So, it was back to headphones, and computer managed music, which is fine for awhile, but I miss my TTs, tape, and my LS50 surround system.

The soundstage and disappearance act they perform is wondrous, so watch out. Pretty soon you'll be in my predicament. I've been obsessed with this 'soundstage as surround' vision since I saw the pic of the MIT sound lab which had them surrounding the sweet spot, (32?) LS50s in a sphere surrounding, above and below the listening chair. I wonder what that soundstage is like.

Result: turning a fine two channel system into a classic 11.2 system. I'll let the software interpolate the "height/presence" speakers, and just revel in my old surround sound music, and Yamaha's 9 channel stereo mode. Amazing. I really can't stand not having the same soundstage all around, so I have 4 more LS50s to buy for the rears. It will take a while to get the 'boss' to accept that 11 LS50s makes sense. I'm sure there will be some good buys on them down the road that will help. Then, I'll replace my subs.

You have me curious, what did you decide to do with your R300s? Are they trade in material or are you going to use them in another rig?

Enjoy them, they're habit forming.

Chris

Best, Chris

I have an unusual question.

I have renovation being done at home during winter and I'll be putting LS50s open on stand in garage (not heated) for couple of months. I live in Atlanta, GA so weather is not harsh like North but it does get below freezing quiet often. Is it safe to keep LS50 in garage open? How about during summer time?

Just cover them to keep them from getting dusty and musty when not in use. No problem with those temps.

The winter temps are fine but I wouldn't keep mine in the garage during summer in Atlanta, the humidity is what would worry me but maybe it's no big deal. You don't have a conditioned room you can keep them in?

Thanks for the reply. I'm little concerned about putting them inside home with kids and contractor going around.

guys i'm just setting up my kef ls50w speakers.
any feedbback you can provide on my settings below would be appreciated, thank you?

my room is pretty bright (hardwood floors)
12' wide x 30 deep (one big rectangle from living room leading into open kitchen)

have for now one svs sb2000.
might either add another OR go to one sb4000
(anyone also in this ball game)
still haven't decided.
...i play at moderate volumes

basic settings:
subwoofer/speaker balance.
what should i set this at? more towards subwoofer?

expert settings also confuse me:
bass extension...should i set at minimal since sub is handling most of bass or just standard?
or even large given room size?
my svs is set to handle bass at 80-90hz

but there are 2 settings in expert that i'm not familiar with.
high pass mode shows 85
subout low pass shows as 70
not sure if i should tweak these two or not

thanks

Should I get a single LS50 for my center channel in a 5.1 setup? I have a pair of LS50s as front L +R. Or should I get the R200C, right now on sale for $699, same price as the single LS50.
