SpeedWoofer 12X

OK, the muzzle is off and I can finally spill the beans about the new subwoofer. With the embargo lifted I can tell you the following...

The new sub will be called SpeedWoofer 12X. It features a high-excursion 12" driver with dual 12" passive radiators. The amp is rated at 600 watts but according to their testing it's almost 700 (I'm not sure what RSL will advertise it at though). It's a class D design that will have built-in wireless, ala the 10S, and dual band parametric EQ. What I'm being told is the sub will have linear response to "well below 20Hz".

I've been given no dimensions yet but they're saying "The 12X is going to be a reasonably sized subwoofer. I wouldn’t call it small, but its definitely not large." Given how small the 10S is my guess is it won't be anything most of us would consider unreasonable.

RSL is using a fully customized amp so they've hit a few unanticipated roadblocks along the way. That's part of the reason for the delay, but another is they created an all new Compression Guide called CG-X (Compression Guide-X). Its name is derived from the X pattern that divides the internal enclosure into multiple chambers. They've already applied for a patent on the design. The layout not only strengthens the enclosure but according to RSL it maintains woofer control for faster transient response.

Pricing is still being debated but it won't be a 4 figure sub. They're considering a promotion at launch time, something I am encouraging them to do. It's not a guarantee, but indications point to it being very possible. And before you ask, no I can't provide a date. I know the amp has thrown them for a loop, but like all things Howard designs it won't be released until he thinks it's perfect. While that stinks for those looking to buy now, it will provide long-term benefits to those who purchase one in the future.

More to come as it's available.

When I inquired back in October, Howard emailed that it would be available around February. Of course, based on what you've learned from them since, that may no longer may be accurate.

Quick update... I just talked to RSL and there will be a promotion upon launch. It may not be broadly advertised though so be sure you're subscribed to this thread for more info. I'll post another update when I can.

The SpeedWoofer 12X sounds very promising. If it has that indefinable magic that the 10S possesses, it'll be something indeed. I almost bought the 10S but decided to hold out for the 12" model. I just hope it won't break the bank.

My guess would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $899-$999. Definitely want to get in on the initial deal!

Anyone used the CG5s in a nearfield setup, such as computer speakers on a desktop with an amp? How did they sound when about 2-3 ft away?

RSL CG5/CG25 wins Audioholics Best Budget Speaker for 2019

It's nice to see RSL getting some much-deserved attention. I've had my CG25s for 3 months and I love them. If the new subs live up to the CG25 standard, they will have a killer high-end package with incredible value.

RSL commentary starts at the 5:05 mark.

The Wirecutter likes the Speedwoofer 10s

The Wirecutter names the RSL Speedwoofer 10s as the best high-performance subwoofer. I'm not sure I would classify the 10s as high-performance (at least on the AVS scale), but it's an interesting read nonetheless. The 10s beat out many well-known brands such as SVS, Hsu, Polk, and others.

From the article...

Quote:
The Rogersound Labs Speedwoofer 10S offers practically everything one could want in a midpriced subwoofer. For its size and price, it provides plenty of output for action movies and bassy hip-hop and EDM recordings, and our testing panel found that its clarity and precision matched or exceeded that of many more expensive subwoofers we tried. It incorporates a 10-inch woofer in a ported enclosure, driven by a 350-watt internal amplifier, and it measures a relatively compact 16 by 15 by 16¾ inches (HWD). The subwoofer has a built-in wireless receiver, so you can pair it with Rogersound’s inexpensive wireless transmitter for even easier setup and positioning of the subwoofer.

The Speedwoofer 10S is one of the relatively rare subwoofers that sound equally great with music and movies. It’s punchy and precise enough to reproduce the chest-thumping, upper-bass snap of kick drum and thumb-slapped electric bass, yet it also maintains its composure (and shakes the couch) when asked to reproduce ultra-deep bass tones such as the submarine engine and depth-charge sound effects in U-571. In our listening tests, the panelists praised it for its ability to blend with the other speakers, with Lauren noting that “it sounds like an extension of the rest of the system” and Ron commenting that “it has a clean transition from the upper-bass notes down to the low pipe organ tones.”

Glad I joined the forum I was going to get my first real 5.1 setup with rsl so I guess I'll hold off till February and hope the new sub is released. Do you think it will be available as an option with their 5.1 package? Or just go with 2 speedwoofer 10s?

it will probably be included in their CG5/CG25 offerings like they did when they had the CG4 and CG3 lineups. they make it really easy to mix and match what you want.

The best thing to do with RSL is email or call them up and get their advice. One thing I know is that they won't try to upsell you. They will listen to your needs and suggest a setup that will be optimized for your space and budget. Their package deals make ordering easier for most but one of the biggest strengths of RSL is their customer service.

If you plan to spend a fair amount of time listening to music, have dual subwoofer capability (L/R) on your AVR and your budget and room placement can support it, I'd suggest also speaking with RSL about that route also.

I have a pair of 10s' and love them.

I'm be joining the owners circle of cg5 speakers. I'll post photos when they are setup and some impressions against my current set. I'll try to get some pre/post break-in info too. But I'll all be subjective.

Speakers are here going through break-in. I'm going down the playing music route. System has the speakers set to large and the sub was removed for now. I'll run calibration once this is done.

So far all I can is these speakers are amazing compared to what I had. Considering there is no calibration on everything sounds perfect. Some of the lowest notes show that the sub is off, but for the majority of the time I can't tell.

Oh the cg25 is much larger than I expected...
Some unboxing pics attached. I've got some close shots of the tweeter is anyone wants....

Haha, thanks. Here's some more pics because why not. I need to level my stands, but pretty happy with the purchase. I haven't really tested them with anything audio critical yet...........

Maybe I'll watch some u571 ... It's been a while

I don't advise doing any critical listening until the speakers are fully broken in (~40 hours playing).

I've never been one to buy into the break-in theory, but my CG25s went from sounding okay to sounding spectacular following break-in. I took advantage of a weekend trip and just played music on a loop in all-channel stereo. When we came back, it sounded like someone had swapped out the speakers!

Some initial comments.

Music is perfect either in 2 channel or dolby surround mode. With my previous sets, having music in Dobly mode, wouldn't sound that great, but the cg25 in the center keeps everything balanced and the sound is great.

Movies, it's still a toss up for me on this, so waiting on the break-in to complete:

--Localization of the Sub is completely gone and I really can never tell when it's being used. Crossovers are set to 80Hz all around, Auto calibration had it at 60, but I bumped to 80 because why stress the drivers/amp when I've got a sub to take care of those low notes.

--Dialog is clear, but not always blended into the sound stage, sometime I find my self noticing the sound is coming from the center speaker. Maybe I need to tilt the from of the speaker slightly upward. I don't seem to notice this with music, so not sure about this one. I followed the suggestion from the manual to drop the Db of the L/R channels to keep the center clearer. When I ran Auto, it pushed the Center -2Db from the L/R, I changed it to be -1Db, maybe I should push it to zero Db.

Only watched some of U571, some of Star Wars EP 1, and What Happened to Monday.

Nearly done with break-in, maybe about 30 hrs in.

Ran calibration again after adjusting the L/R channels for toe in and giving the center channel a slight upward tilt.

I noticed this time that AVR's calibration put the speakers at the following:

LARGE
Crossover: 40Hz
L/R -2db
C -4.5db.

I modified the setting to SMALL and played set L/R to 60Hz and left the Center at 40Hz for fun. I played some music and thought the bass notes we a little odd sounding... I can't quite place it, maybe it was an issue with the content (80s mix). It was almost to forward and boomy.

Adjusting the crossover back to 60Hz (might go back to 80Hz) and modified the levels at the Input settings to be -2db for the L/R channels to give the center a chance to be heard for that dialog, but the center is clearly more audible (cg25) over my cg5s on the side.

Still playing a lot with this to get that amazing sound. I was really enjoying it the first day or so, but find it difficult to really tune these in, I may need to incorporate more room treatment to the walls behind the speakers. I have a feeling they are too close to the cg5 and that might be causing an issue.

been there done that

On my old Pioneer receiver I mainly used Direct and Pure Direct for most sources and Dolby Movie for two channel TV sources.

On my current Yamaha I am still playing with setting but I am mostly using Straight and Pure Settings.

Not recently. RSL is a little gun shy because of the time it's been in development so they're reluctant to release any information until it's solid dates, not projections.

True, I could go down the path of testing Direct/Pure Direct modes, but I'm sure I won't like Pure Direct, I enjoy loudness being enabled.

Some more testing was done with the rest of Star Wars Ep1 and Stranger Things Season 1 Bluray. I noticed with AC3/Dolby Digital/Dolby HD sources I need to bring up the volume to near reference levels. I believe this is due to me turning off Dynamic EQ. Two channel sources (Star Trek Voyager/DS9 Netflix) are significantly louder. but this is not directly related to the speakers performance so let's not lose focus of this thread.

Pushed the speakers back up to 80Hz corssover and modified the LPF on LFE 250HZ.

Coming up on a week of ownership (tomorrow) and really loving the experience. I'm drawn in much quicker to what I'm watching instead of thinking about the speakers.

Some more observations.

With the CG25 acting as my center channel. While watching some movies, I'm noticing more from the different sound tracks. Some examples are the difference acoustics of the rooms actors are in or if a recording has some other oddities.

Limited Examples:
--Star Wars Episode II - In the scene where Anakin is in the Lar's wook-shop on Tatooine , I can hear the echo is his voice in the room when he explains that he killed everyone... oh my.
--Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King Extended - the scene where Saruman is talking from the top of his tower, there is a breif moment where the treble appears to be lost in the scene for maybe 20 seconds. Never noticed this before... (unless my system died for a short moment there)

Either way, excellent clarity from the cg25.

Ran AVR calibration again after moving the speakers around a little.

Any other non-scientific observations you guys notice?

My favorite non-scientific observation...when I close my eyes my ears tell me I'm not listening to an audio system. There is a symphonic orchestra in my family room!
