I have found a few options on speakers for my living room using this forum. I have a separate question I didn't think of though.

My TV stand only has about 4.5 inches of clearance under it. All of the center channels I have looked at are 7~8 inches in height. My question is, can I put my center speaker/channel on top of a ledge above the TV?

The details... the middle of my TV is ~3.5 feet off the ground, the top of the TV is ~4.5 feet off the ground. The ledge starts at a little over 8 feet off the ground. So the center speaker would be about 4 feet above the TV. I have plenty of room on the top of the wall to angle the center downwards towards the seating area. Is this too high to work, and should I look into trying to find a nice looking way of raising my TV stand about 4 inches?

I have considered mounting it to the wall behind and above the TV, but some of the center speakers are rated >20 lbs, so I am a little hesitant to place it on a bracket above my TV. I also might move my setup a foot or two left/right while trying to get everything setup, and not sure I want to keep drilling new holes to center the speaker.

Thanks!

I actually put all 3 of my speakers on a shelf just above the screen, and I have a friend who does something similar except the speakers are built in to a cove. . This is called "Soffet mounting" and it has long been used in recording studios. The speakers are tilted down so that they are still pointed right at the listener's ears.

What you seem to be proposing is a little less extreme, but it can work.

I saw those, but most don't hold the weight. The center I am looking at it 26 pounds. Even if there is a center stage that can hold that, I am concerned what kind of stress that is going to put on the TV's frame and back panel.

My concern is that it will sound like it is coming from the ceiling when people talk. That would be bad. smile.gif

It won't. Just be sure it's aimed down at the LP.
