What would be suggested for a budget of $3000 for speakers? They will be going with this receiver, and this amp...

UPA-500 http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amplifiers/products/upa500

UMC-200 http://shop.emotiva.com/products/umc200

Right now I am looking at a definitivetech set, with an 8080HD and StudioMonitor 65 x4

Also was looking at a KEF set

What should i be looking at in this price range?

I've seen a lot of people say they like KEF speakers.

Another speaker to consider would be the PSB Image line. I have the T5 towers of this line and the C5 center and I like them a lot.

How would those compare to the deftech set or KEF set?

The deftech set also has the center channel with the powered subwoofer. Is it worth it, or more of a gimmick?

Hopinater 01-09-2014 10:59 AM

I have heard that speakers with powered subwoofers can sometimes present more of a challenge when getting them paired up with your stand alone subwoofer because the front and center channels need to go in front but that may not be a good location for subwoofers in your room. Sometimes putting subwoofers in the wrong locations causes more trouble than anything else.

I've not heard the KEF or those particular Deftechs so I can't compare. But I can tell you the PSBs nice neutral speakers with good clarity and detail. Also Crutchfield is a great company to deal with and they have a 60 day return window.

Ok. Do you have any other suggestions of what speakers to look for? I guess the next thing is to hear them in person before making any decisions.

I have the Ultra Towers (for a 2.1 system) and I love the way they sound.
SVS has the risk free 45 day audition so there's really nothing to lose.

You can use another Studio Monitor 65 as a center channel - check them out, you
may like them. If not, then I will throw you a curve-ball as a recommendation.

And you can even use a SM55 as a center channel - Definitive is nice.

iCrap 01-09-2014 11:28 AM

Yeah I know I could also do that, but is it worth getting the 8080 rather than another 65 or 55?

A vertical center, will give you an overall better blend/balance performace.

Your call

That is a very wise decision. None of us can do much more than throw out recommendations, you certainly don't want any of us choosing your speakers for you (and I know you're not asking us to).

Nico's thought regarding the SVS speakers is a good one based on the in home trial.

A few weeks ago I heard some Magnepans and the sound was like nothing I'd ever previously experienced. A honest to goodness 3d floating soundstage with depth and realism. You could get a MMG setup for 3gs
The downside is they might be tricky to set up and they require a decent amount of power and you need a good quality sub to blend.
My goal is to have a full Maggie 7.1 set up one day. For now/to start I just got my hands on a mint pair of used 1.6s and am waiting for all my emotiva stuff to come in (umc-200/xpa-2/xsp-1phono)
Google magnepan review and see all the stellar reviews that come up

Also go to the magnepan owners thread here and read the last few posts. Magnepan just demoed a "mystery system" at CES that they claim will retail for 2,300 that was arguably one of the best sounding of the entire show regardless of price.

I've never heard them but would love to. I have seen a lot of love given to them through the last few years but I also heard they would work better for music than movies. From what you heard would you agree with that or disagree? I'm guessing you would disagree since you want to go 7.1 with them but I would still like to hear your thoughts.

I was in the showroom during the nfl playoffs so I heard the surround playing sports. It sounded like I was at the stadium. Cannot comment on movies as I've never heard one thru Maggie's. I think it's the perceived lack of bass that probably lead people to believe they aren't good for movies
My new master plan is a tri center set up with rears and a nice sub or two.

Good info, thanks.
