Hi all -

I have a polk Cs10, looking to get the Cs20 but i read somewhere that i can use a bookshelf for the center channel.

I have an extra pair of polk m 40's and thought i'd try it out.

So... my question is are the gains/losses by doing this?

My set up -

Yamaha - RX 700

Polk 70s - fronts
Polk - 40s , rears
Center Cs10

BIC F12 X 2

Why? The m40 is pretty much the same as the cs10 that you're using, in that they both have two 5.25" drivers with a one inch tweeter. The cs20 would be an upgrade because it's got the bigger 6.5" drivers.

The goal for your LCR front speakers is balance between the three to give you an even, seamless front sound stage. Since you're running towers as LR mains I'd also suggest the cs20 center speaker, as a bookshelf with fewer and smaller drivers might get overwhelmed by the towers. (If you were using bookshelf speakers as your LR mains then a third, identical bookshelf speaker as a center would actually be the ideal.)

My neighbors all listen to great music. Whether they like it or not.

You are going to get wider dispersion using a vertical bookshelf over a horizontal center. If you have listeners sitting in other places other than the sweet spot, then you can definitely consider using a bookshelf as the center. Try it out and I think you'll notice the center as a bookshelf fills the room a bit more.
