Did some casual listening last night on the new R253's, and left them running this morning while I went to work to help with some break-in time. In direct comparison to the R162's, first initial thoughts were hints of:
  • Clearer sound at slightly lesser volume
  • Clearer / more vibrant mids
Today I went home at lunch for a first deeper exploratory session, at louder volumes. I did multiple songs back to back with both speakers, and I actually disabled my subwoofer all together from my amp speaker configuration. Versus the R162's, the R253's had:

  • Without a doubt, a deeper and fuller bass. This was the most noticeable difference, so far.
  • I thought imaging was even slightly better than the R162's. I'll toy around and tinker with placement more in the next few days.
  • A slightly nicer / richer / clearer overall sound
So far, I think the R253's are a slightly noticeable difference and a small step forward in overall sound quality. Even when I would go back to the R162's, both speakers can really sing and shine, and sounded extremely similar.

I'm actually glad I have a sub that I can throw the low frequencies to and dial out more bass, as I live in a townhome and have to be somewhat respectful of my neighbor. If I didn't have a sub, I'd be likely getting in trouble because at the higher volumes I like to listen to for vocals, the bass became too much for me to leave as is with the R253. I'd say if you are not going to be running a sub and also cannot get too crazy with your bass volumes, you should be conscious that the R253 might put out a tad too much compared to the R162. It's a double edged sword though, because at least on back to back listening, you'll absolutely notice the bass tones you're losing on the R162 vs R253.

Another thought now running through my mind after the initial comparison is that for the size and price, the R162's are really fantastic. I'm not certain how different any of the speaker hardware truly is of the Infinity R162 versus the Revel M15 bookshelfs, but it seems like we're probably getting a steal on these speakers when they go on sale.

I'll continue to get as much listening time in and more back to back testing this week, and will report back again. Hopefully I can get a better sense and be able to further articulate the difference.

EDIT: More testing, day two

Is it my imagination or is the midrange on the RC263 not putting out a ton of sound? It seems like most of the sound is coming from the tweeter and bass drivers.

Play something that has a lot of dialogue. The human voices will almost exclusively play through the mid-range on the RC263. You should be able to quickly tell if the sound is off. Otherwise it's fine. If I put my hand to the mid-range driver it hardly vibrates compared to the bass drivers.

I can relay that while I don't use my RC263 a ton, I too felt initially the same way. As a work around (and still in place 3+ months later) on my Denon AVR I disabled a setting where it then let me control bass and treble. I only use this setting on the AVR profile that I use when playing movies; not for music, which doesn't use that speaker anyway. I'd like to revisit dialing in my RC263 some more once I have it placed a little higher as my current TV stand will not allow that. I do have it angled up heading towards my MLP though, and its quite good as is.

Got the R152 refurbs delivered today. For refurbs they look brand new and were packaged like new. Out of the box they are a bit larger and heavier than I expected. They also look a little better, less cheap looking at least, compared to how they look on the Harman website. I'm still not a fan of the square, sharp corners of the cabinets. For the low price I had to give these a shot, so we'll see how well they sound.

Hello folks, I attempted a close mic measurement of the drivers in the R253 today. I had the grille on and just pressed the mic against the grille for the measured driver (mic centered on the driver). I did this to attempt to suss out the crossover frequencies. I am thinking 600Hz and 2kHz. Thoughts?

My RC263 shipped today and I have to say that I'm a little bit too excited to get it... I think I'm just a sucker for a deal like what Infinity just had going on. I just got an Emotiva C2 and it's really fantastic but just something special about getting great performance at such a low price. Wish I could have justified picking up some 162s or even the 253s to go with it.

Got in another couple hours today of back to back speaker testing of the R162 vs R253, including back to back testing with rearranged / swapped speaker placement to the same songs. Definitely learned some more about both speaker sets.

I moved the R253's closer and further width out from one another and tinkering around with some toe-in. No question now, the imaging on the R253's is slightly but noticeably better. The sounds were a bit more localized and/or distinct in placement. I tried a number of spacing and toe-in configurations over the first two months with the R162's, and I think anyone would have an easier time getting the imaging dialed in with the R253's. When you close your eyes and just listen, the sound stage felt slightly bigger or a bit wider as well on the R253.

Also, the R253 definitely has more vertical displacement of the sound versus the R162. Horizontally I think they were pretty close, maybe a slight advantage to the R253. I think the high's of the two speakers are essentially equal. It does feel like the R253 mid range is slightly clearer, and that the overall sound is just a bit more full and/or life like. Having said that, I'd still deem the difference between the two as a small but noticeable step forward in overall sound quality; the exception to that statement is the R253 definitely has fuller lower end bass if you're not using a subwoofer.

The imaging and midrange clarity difference on the R253, although I'd define as slight, is noticeable enough to me that I am keeping these R253's due to the price I purchased them at. At full price, I wouldn't classify them as superior enough to the R162's to justify the difference. Looks like I'll be setting up my R162's in my master bedroom sometime soon!

All I can say is "WOW"! Color me impressed. Got my pair of R162s last night. They had big shoes to fill,
replacing a pair of vintage JBL L112s. No problem. None at all. The highs just sparkle, and the top to bottom
smoothness really impresses these old ears. Run alone the bass was substantial for such a small speaker, but I
have them crossed over to an old DefTech PF1500 sub that really fills out the bottom end. I'm no stranger to
Harman's Infinity products. My living room stereo has Overture 3 powered towers that I've had for 20 years,
and my HT setup is anchored by a pair of 15-year-old Interlude IL60 powered towers that still deliver the
goods. The R162's sonic signature most resembles that of the latter, but with an airy openness that the IL60s
only hint at. I feel as though I stole these R162s at the sale price. Looks like some new stands are in order now.

GLBright,

Is that your center channel speaker sitting on the floor? Have you tried placing it on top of the furniture, and then placing your TV on top of it?

Sorry for a little OT.

That's an old Infinity CC-3 center that I used with my Overture 3s when they were my HT speakers. It's actually for sale. Nothing could sit on it anyway since the cabinet is curved metal. I run stereo only here in the back room.

Got my RC263 yesterday and fired it up... if I didn't also have the Emotiva C2, this would be my new center channel no questions asked. Very even sound, blending perfectly with my Revel M16s (makes sense since the Reference uses Concerta 2 design tech) and incredibly clear with some extra pep at higher volumes. It's also IMO a very attractive almost charcoal grey that is a bit more interesting than the usual black wrap and not nearly as grey as the website makes it look.

Tested with my usual go-tos of Steppenwolf's voice in Justice League, Thor: Ragnarok, Heat (that outdoor gunfight...) and others I feel like it actually provides just a touch more clarity than the C2 at times, perhaps a product of the perfect blend with the Revels. The C2 digs a bit deeper in my room and as I sit only 6.5 - 7 ft. from the center I feel like the C2's wider spread on the drivers gives it a slightly more expansive feel than the 263. Not a knock on the Infinity by any means but just how it goes in my room.

At $500 it's still a good choice though the competition is a lot stiffer, but at the sale price of $199 I haven't seen a better value. I can easily see how some might even prefer this over something like the C2 but in my application the Emotiva is just a smidge better.

If anybody is needing a pair of R162’s I have an extra set unused new in box ready to go. I’m gonna go with the R253’s when they come back on sale again. Missed the return / exchange period with Harman.

I may be interested. Looking at potentially getting a 2nd pair of 162's to expand system from 5.1.4 to 7.1.4. Has anybody used the RS152s in a dolby setup? Curious on peoples thoughts compared to 162.

Any reason to not get a set of R162's, the RC263, and the R12 sub for a 3.1 system? Ive loved all the H/K systems in my cars but I'm only just now branching out to home theater products.

Nope, and they're currently at great prices. The sub doesn't dig terribly deep but at that price it's tough to argue with. They also have 30-day no-risk with shipping covered both ways if you don't like it... pull the trigger.

Consider it pulled, especially with 6 months no interest. Now I just got to get a receiver. This home theater stuff is a slippery slope. First I buy a projector, then I'm like, I need sound, lol.

Check out https://www.accessories4less.com for receiver.

You can get some pretty good stuff for about half to 70% of retail.

I've seen accessories4less recommend quite often and prices always look good. But I'm torn between just getting a Denon that works or springing for a Marantz like the NR1508.

I would pass on the R12 sub and get something better, unless your budget doesn't allow for it. If you need a nice mid-level receiver, neweggflash has the Onkyo TX-NR686 for $299 w/$30 gift card thrown in.

So I am really wondering *IF* this Infinity Reference set is "better" than RBH's Impression series that I have in red burl...Most notably the r55ti towers and the r56ci center?

Does anyone have any direct/indirect experience or any opinion(s) ?
I'd appreciate it. I am thinking of getting the Infinity towers, 162 BS, RS152 surrounds and the center. I guess the R12 Sub isn't all that?

Thank you for any feedback!

I'd appreciate it. I am thinking of getting the Infinity towers, 162 BS, RS152 surrounds and the center. I guess the R12 Sub isn't all that?

Thank you for any feedback!
I can't speak on the towers or that center, but I used to have the R5Bi bookshelf speakers. I would give the edge to the Infinity bookshelfs. It definitely won't be a massive jump. You may even be losing bass output and volume on the towers since the Infinity are smaller. The Infinity tweeter is definitely an improvement though.

Finally got my R162-based system properly located and sounding sweet. It's on a short wall of a 10'6"x12' room. Although I still prefer my Infinity towers for large-scale symphonic and big band music, these R162s provide a level of resolution, openness, and sound stage that I've never experienced before at home. I honestly wonder how much better a pair of, say, Revel Concerta2 M16s would really be. This is now day three of rain so they've been getting a workout.
