The worst speakers to you is Salk, really?

I'd like to know which ones you use to own and why you've come to that conclusion. My findings are the direct opposite as are many others, who've heard a whole zoo full of speakers.

Song towers, absolutley dull sounding just my opinion, kept them for 3 months, then sold them, went back to aerials 7B's, no comparison, also now using golden ears (7's)in a separate room, they are excellent

All of the above design and manufacture their own drivers. Also have outstanding looks in addition to being engineered and built well.

Wow! Never heard someone say that the SongTowers are dull sounding. I currently have the Veracity Songtowrss and they are far from being dull sounding to me.

Sorry you had bad luck with them...

I have not yet heard any Salk Sound speakers but I do realize that like music, speakers are a personal taste item. Still, from what I have read, they are highly regarded by many. With my choice in music, they also may not be for me but I would love to audition the Soundscape 8's or Veracity STs, or perhaps the new Exoticas someday. 😎

My favorites--

1-Vandersteen (may not be the "best" in any overall competition, but they do absolutely nothing wrong)

2-My old ESS Heil AMT speakers (going on 37 years and I think they still are impressive)

3-A tie between ProAc and Harbeth speakers

My least favorite speakers have been Bose and JBL.

With the exception of a bad experience we all like what we know.

Fo non-ID speaker companies Vandersteen, Revel and Monitor Audio have outstanding engineering and make good to great products. Their customer service has been above average as well. There are many other speakers that I have heard and liked but I have minimal to no experience with the companies themselves.

As far as ID companies, I will avoid the obvious bias of recommending the brand I own ), but I have had good experiences with Seaton Sound and Danley Sound Labs. There are others but those stand out for quality, superb engineering and great value.

Some of my least favorite are now defunct ... not that I had anything to do with that.

Anxiety is contagious, please keep yours to yourself.

hmmmm this is tough - from what I've heard over years, I'd have to say in no particular order:

Magnepan
PMC
Anthony Gallo (own)

The worst -

Rockets (from AV123) - I'd rather have BOSE

Based on what I've owned (not listened to elsewhere for a short period of time):
Axiom
Advent (from early 80s, still use them)
Harman/Kardon (satellites. I know, I know; but for what they were they sounded great.)

Worst:
JBL
(I dislike Bose for their insulting pricing; but I've never owned them so I feel I can't list them)

I have heard allot of speakers and there are a million more I would like to hear
But so far the best for me have been

JTR
Selah Audio
Danley.

I have also heard allot of bad speakers or to put it correctly, bad for me. I won't mention what they are, just to keep the peace.

I think it is really easy to just say Bose is the worst, but Bose is what Bose is. They are excellent at marketing to make you think they are the best.
I mean if you talk to anyone that does not really have a clue about audio, there is a good chance that they believe that Bose is a really good speaker.
That all falls on great marketing and Bose is one of the best at it.

OK, here I go...

1) DCM (old stuff).

I first heard the TimeWindows back in the late 70's and loved them. In the mid 80's I bought a pair of TimeFrame 500's and used them for about 15 years.

2) Focal.

I've listened to their home speakers and have had Utopias in a car stereo. I currently have an inexpensive pair of Focal coax speakers in my car and they sound great.

3) Boston Acoustics.

I've had a 5.1 setup featuring Boston mains/surrounds/center for about 15 years now, in addition to owning several pairs of Boston speakers for bedroom/office systems. For some reason the Boston sound/value proposition always worked for me.

I've seen a couple of people mention Vandersteen. I remember listening to the Model 1 back in the day and being favorably impressed. At my urging a friend of mine recently picked up a pair of old Model 1's at the Salvation Army here for $50. He is using them as replacements for some frankenspeakers in old Pioneer HPM-100 boxes which replaced all of the drives with cheap car drivers. They sounded like hell. The Vandersteens sound wonderful.

As far as hate? I've never cared much for the newer Bose speakers, although some of the older x01 speakers sounded OK. But really, any Japanese speaker from the '70's. All of the one's I heard were shrill and boomy; they just hurt to listen to. I had a pair of Dynaco A35's back then, much nicer.

Always come back to B&W

Bose portable speakers are actually pretty decent for the size where that's an important feature. Their home products not so much and large part of it is price.

I don't really feel like I've spent enough time with other speakers to say I dislike a certain brand altogether. It really depends on the application for me, even Bose has it's place if I want something really small that can get loud.

Good:

Danley
BFM
JTR

Not so good:

Bose
Cerwin Vega

If one is going to make a simplistic assessment of the value of different alignments, it would be that sealed/IB goes the lowest, at the highest cost per dB; horns have the lowest cost per dB at the expense of size, and vented box characteristics lie in between the other two. None is inherently superior across the board, neither is any inherently inferior across the board. The one to use is the one that fits your response and output needs, available space and bank account. -BFM

KEF (true innovators in sound)
B&W (ditto)
Klipsch (as much as I dislike the harsh horn, their overall speaker dynamics is out of this world, and their 650-thx is excellent for instrumentals)

I would stay away from DIY companies at this point.

Its funny how I see a bunch of guys putting down JBL, I wonder if you'd all feel the same if you had a chance to hear their new M2's?
From a lot of what I've read they are pretty amazing speakers.

JBL is a long history, and their consumer speakers haven't always held to the standard of their pro speakers. But there are too many great, even classic JBL speakers to say they are the worst, and anyone who does so hasn't heard many of their speakers. Most commercial cinemas use JBL speakers, many imax systems, and so on. Many recording studios use JBL speakers, and in fact many THX soundtracks are mixed on JBL speakers. JBL even helped to develop the THX standard as it was created using some of their drivers.
