Help me choose a pair of audiophile speakers

So I got a mcintosh (200WPC) and need to get good set of speakers. I would prefer this to hold me over for several years to come. I will be listening to music and watching movies in a 60/40 ratio. Music i listen to is classical, orchestral, symphonic metal, jazz, pop (specifically Jpop) and techno. Basically music categorized by high complexity and many instruments. I have a budget of about $1000.00. I have a subwoofer so that is not needed.

Thoughts?

I've had mine for 17 years, still a happy camper.

I'd buy them again.

I agree, but for that price, that's one heck of a speaker.

Music area: Magnepan 3.6, McIntosh MC2205 amp & C48 preamp, SVS SB13-Ultra, Oppo BDP 95, dbx 3BX, and assorted equipment.
Movie area: EMP Tek E5Bi (were rebadged to R5Bi), RBH/EMP Tek R55Ti, PSA S3000i, Denon X2000, Oppo BDP 83.

I don't know how this fits in with the other suggestion, but right now Music Direct has the Wharfedale Diamond 10.7 on sale for exactly $999/pr -

http://www.musicdirect.com/p-15494-w...eakers-pr.aspx

Stereophile Magazine thought very highly of them -

http://www.stereophile.com/content/w...07-loudspeaker

Available in Black, Cherry, and Rosewood.

Wharfedale - Diamond 10.7 -

http://wharfedale.co.uk/product.php?pid=55

The Rosewood is fantastic finish.

The Cherry is not remotely as bright or orange as photos typically make it out to be. It is a nice medium brown with a hint of red.

The Rosewood, are a bit darker with a bit more red, but excellent grain pattern and a very nice looking speaker.

How about the Philharmonitors from Philharmonic Audio? They're made by Dennis Murphy who played ( ?still plays) with the Washington ( D.C.) Philharmonic Orchestra........voiced by someone who knows how instruments should sound....and well within your budget; they're $850 shipped.........

In a bookshelf, though pushing your budget, the Wharfedale JADE 3 ($1499/pr) were highly rated by Stereophile Magazine -

http://www.musicdirect.com/p-53406-w...ce=igodigital&

http://www.stereophile.com/content/w...-3-loudspeaker

Again, somewhat destroying your budget, but you will not find a better pair of speakers for the money than the FOCAL 836 for $1899/pr marked down from $3200/pr. Crystal clear speakers.

Except they require that I put them very far into the room. Not really a possibility.

Let's not discount the Martin Logan 35XT Bookshelf speakers. The new Motion series have generated some very positive feedback. I was very impressed for the money when I head the Martin Logan Motion 40 floor-standing speakers.

Though, even the Motion 35XT are stretching your budget -

$625 EACH = Martin Logan 35XT Black Cherry -

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/martinlo...&skuId=8414018

$599 EACH = Martin Logan 35XT Black -

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/martinlo...&skuId=8343008

Well worth a look and a listen.

Axiom M22s. They are very neutral and clean, so classical and jazz sound fantastic. A lot of blues/rock is not recorded well, so I find for those I have to use audio processing more often; I have a Yamaha receiver and that translates to their "Sound Programs". But for classical and jazz I run them using "Pure Direct" and it's audio bliss! I have my M22s paired with a HSU sub.

You have received some good suggestions and some laughable ones. It really comes down to personal preference and people here love to share theirs, but you really have to get out there and listen for yourself. There many members here open up their homes to folks for demos and of course there are always the B&M audio/video stores. Don't be intimidated by the prices as the used market is rife with great speakers at 40-50% of their original MSRP (see Audiogon).

Buying a great pair of speakers used is an excellent way to get into the audiophile world. Good luck

Yep. Not sure why this is not recommended more often. The deals I've gotten on used or NOS have been ridiculous. I like letting someone else take the depreciation. And so far the condition of what I've bought has been excellent.
