I've got speakers, now what?

Hey everyone,

Last week I got these speakers from a friend. He didn't know what to do with it and they were standing in his garage for the last five years (2x RCF compact 100w): imgur.com/CNdXyTB and imgur.com/qYw4S3V (those are links but I don't have 5 posts yet...)

I'm a total noob when it comes to technology/sound/amps etc. (I can make websites though!) but I believe the holes are XLR inputs? I have no wires or anything with it, just the speakers themselves. I would like to know what I need to get this working (don't be afraid to be too detailed, links to products would be nice!!), I'd love to hook them up to my computer (I've got an integrated sound card in my ASUS P6T deluxe motherboard).

Best regards,
Bretlaw1 (because there apparently already is a Bretlaw :@)

Ask your friend if he has any cables for those speakers.
Do you have an amp ?

I asked him but he told me he didn't get any cables with them. He got the speakers from a cafe-owner who told him that they were still working.I do have an amp (philips FA144) and some others at m parents home. They have all kinds of outputs but those are for regular speakerwire and not for xlr I think. Hope this helps, thanks for your answer.

The two plugs together are standard Microphone-style XLR pugs which make no sense for speaker. I think the intended current capability of of XLR is too low to be effectively used as Speaker Cables.

The larger round connector by itself on the left is SpeakOn, which is a standard PA Speaker Wire connector with standard connection methods.

Here are some diagrams for wiring SpeakOn connectors. Though you can't see them there are more than one set of connections inside a SpeakOn connector.

This is probably the most obvious for a single speaker -

Though you might want to check with a Musician Supply Store. They also probably have SpeakOn wire cables.

Hey all,

Thank you very much for your answers! I do not have a frys electronics store nearby as I'm living in The Netherlands Thanks bluewizard for your explenation on the 'third hole', I thought it was a power input haha.

I've also sent an e-mail to one of the largest sound-equipment stores here in The Netherlands, they provided me with the following information:
- You need an amplifier of 150w rms with 8 ohm
- Two speakon cables
- 2x jack 2p - 1x mini jack cable

And then it should work. I was wondering about the amplifier, they gave me a link to their webshop but I saw that they purposely filtered out the cheaper brands. I'd like to know if the AMP that I have right now will also do the job. It's a philips FA144.
