I was 8 or 9, and my friends dad had an old yamaha system he bought during WWII, had a preamp, amp, separate tuner, equalizer as well as the yamaha speakers. I had that system till I was in my teens and it blew away every system that was pitted against it, better sound, better bass. Thats when my love for yamaha began as well. My husband doesn't mind, he loves the sound quality, the only that bothers him is when he comes home and says "Honey, what did you buy that was $2,000" And I have to tell the delivery guy to leave it in my car
ambesolman and magic bus like this.

You sure about that WWII part? Yamaha's first hifi product wasn't until 1954 according to their history page http://www.yamaha.com/about_yamaha/c...ory/index.html

Wow I started this thread and then went on vacation. Pretty cool to see so many people respond. It's amazing to read about so many different journeys that took us all to the same place!

My very first car had no speakers in it when I bought it. I took an old RCA house speaker that had a 10" woofer in it and strapped it into the passenger seat with the seat belt. Wired it into the stock stereo directly with no amp. It was pretty "audiophile" for a broke 16 year old! I was driving an 88 Nissan truck with just a single bench seat so when I had a friend ride along I had to leave the music at home.

There was no AVS in those days to tell me that what I was doing was not quiet the best way to go about it lol.

What started the Audiophile in you?

Car stereo is another story.

Started with a friend's old a$$ single stereo with two 4x6's in a Cutlass (I believe).

Then my car with a Clarion shaft unit, an EQ/spectrum analyzer (lights!)/booster and a pair of 6x9's on the rear shelf.

Peaked at ridiculous levels in college - Pioneer, Rockford, and (2) 12" JBL's in a ported enclosure in the trunk.

Culminated when I downsized to a single a/d/s/ 10" in sealed, 320i/s components, Clarion preamp only HU, and Soundstream amplification.

That's about the time I started getting deep into home audio; so car audio took "back seat" due to the time commitment going DIY.

Now, I've the income to continue home audio (but as with most others, my hearing isn't as good).

I was an odd kid, but I swear I remember playing this thing with no vinyl on it and I could still hear faint music coming out of its little tiny speaker. Weird.
For me, it was music and movies!
