I know it's not the thread for it, but it was mentioned so I'll ask...

Any feedback (no pun intended) on the noise floor of the $80 Monoprice PA amp? I'm considering it to either add the last two Atmos channels or drive the mains with a 9ch AVR for 7.2.4 in a dedicated theater I'm helping a friend build (with 3 of the Monoprice 15s behind an AT screen). Other options are the commonly recommended Audiosource AMP100/Dayton APA102, or maybe even one of the cheap chip-amps. Noise floor/hiss is my main concern with the Monoprice PA amp, especially for Atmos speakers that will be directly above the main listening position.

after a week i am loving these. i dont know if speaker breakin is true or not, but they are sounding even better or im just getting used to them.
not ideal but im using these as desktop monitors in my garage, man cage with my computer. theyre about 6 feet from me behind the desk. wall is 10 feet or so behind them.

i received the monoprice stands to go along with these and they fit perfect. they sound like its coming from exactly the middle of my monitor.

the price i paid for these at $64 with shipping included im wondering if monoprice made any money. i love the tweeter on these but i like a bright sound. its alive and fun instead of boring.

im still looking to test these out with at least 100 watt amp but want to spend less than $200

I have one and have only used it for some speaker testing and measurements so far. It is light and easy to move around. It does have a noisy fan that I swapped out for a quiet computer fan. I don't hear any noise from it now, from the fan or as background noise. It looks well made and a bargain at the price.

I was referring specifically to the noise floor of the amplification... is there any audible hiss when connected to a speaker but with no input signal, especially with a high-efficiency speaker?

Not that I have noticed. That is what I meant when I said I have not heard any background noise. I used it when testing a high efficiency coax design.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback. He's already ordered the Stage Right 15s, but we can grab the amp when we get closer to build time and order cables, wall plates, etc.

A more likely reality is that you are in the Initial phase of falling in love with them. You are about to enter the Daemonic stage of this set of feelings (see Emerson), which generally occurs during crank-it-up sessions.

The falling-out-of-love phase often occurs when you encounter a different, more elegant and attractive set of loudspeakers that touch your aesthetic soul just by looking at them. (It's kinda like with women.) This phase can be delayed somewhat if you are in a home theater setup and your new thrill has a bag over its head (i.e., behind an AT screen).

In rare cases, the love affair persists through time, eventually entering the Celestial phase (Emerson again).

Actually I agree with him, the sound of these definitely improves with break-in! When I first fired mine up they were extremely harsh and the bass was a little muddy, I was honestly a little disappointed right off the bat. But after playing some music through them all day at a moderately high volume (wasn't home, just playing music to break them in) I noticed a substantial improvement the next day! The low end is now a lot more full and detailed, and they didn't sound nearly as harsh - though they are still definitely bright speakers.

If they are too bright, reduce the Treble control. Experiment -- it's the scientific method.

Usually "brightness" is actually excessive output around 2 kHz. A -3 dB reduction there with your AVR's equalizer, or at other higher frequencies, should do the trick for you. With my Yamaha AVR, the "Natural" setting reduces brightness. Which I use when playing at high volumes.

By bringing women into the subject of how one can be attracted away from an ugly but great sounding speaker by one that looks pretty but may not have any better performance you've rekindled a distant memory of a classic Jimmy Soul song that hit #1 on the Top 40 back in 1963:

Quote:
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

I remember that song. In between verses, the background chorus says, "Hey man, I saw your old lady the other day.

"Yeah?

"Yeah -- Man, she ugggly!

"She may be ugly but she sure can cook."

Sounds like the perfect description for the Monoprice 15" passive PA speaker.

In that vein, reminds me of another song. "Who'll take the woman with the skinny legs?"

LOL, thanks for the literary reference. You inspired me to try reading it, but poetry has a hard time penetrating my brain: I. Poems Initial, Dæmonic and Celestial Love II. The Dæmonic Love, Ralph Waldo Emerson.

i have decided to try lrc in a spare but small bedroom. 12x12
placing one on top of hsu vtf2 mk5 and will find a table for the other.
center will sit on the ground in front of the tv.
will run audyssey and set them to small and 80 crossover.

since youve been using these for a while in lfc setup id like your opinion.

will be using these 90% for movies. should i plug the ports?
would you recommend angling the left and right to mlp and also angling the center upwards to mlp?
also, i have some dolby atmos enabled speakers id like to place on top, but top isnt level.
lot of questions i know but i want to run audyssey only once.

I don't have Audyssey, but I know "running it once" is probably overly optimistic:
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-re...d-part-ii.html
Anyhow, yes, I have the sides angled in, aimed right at MLP. I don't have the center tilted, but the horn is high enough off the floor that I don't have any problems with dialogue (and I'm not anal enough to worry about "floor bounce" from the woofer).
I'm sure you'll be able to find some way of keeping the Atmos speakers on top; as you can see, I have something on top of each.
I had the ports plugged for a while, but measurements with REW lead me to unplug them. Sorry, I don't remember why, but I still love them as they are.
My first generation Pioneers and DIY Fusion 8s are in the basement (and on Craig's List, actually).
I have the xo at 100. Without measurements, you probably won't be able to evaluate the difference. I'm sure it depends on the subs and the room and a million other things.
I am sure, however, that you will enjoy them, especially if you're a value/price fan.
Michael

I also have my LR toed in directly at the MLP which I found imaged the most precisely. I have had my Stage Right 15's for about three months and am very happy with the performance and clarity of dialogue on the center channel. I have mine hanging from a storage shelf via bolts to get them to ~ear level.

i am still amazed these cost me only $64 each shipped.

i like the tweeters. fun and alive. its a horn tweeter, correct? description on monoprice doesnt state that.

ive heard raals and they sounded a bit mellow for my liking.
i had the klipsch rp280s and loved those. these sound similar except the bass of course. these are way cheaper with a simiar sound in the highs.

if you have the space and are a caveman that doesnt give a f about waf just buy when on sale and be happy.

I have the Behringer 12" version (B212XL) which cost me more than 2x that and I believe have a very similar sound as well as the exact same looks. I had no idea these were on sale for that low!

bedroom budget setup complete

tcl 65r615 plus 3.0 monoprice pa speakers = less than 1K
havent run audyssey yet but sounds good and tv looks good. satisfied
just need to clean up a bit and run audyssey tomorrow
placed left speaker on vtf2 mk45 and had to place right on a table, but its about 2.5 inches higher than left.
will that make much difference or should i find something to make left speaker same hight as the right?
