I am very lucky. My wife is ok with my Vienna Acoustic Mozarts (beautiful cabinets) as long as all the gear (receiver, Oppo player, turntable, etc.) is hidden in a cabinet.

I don't know why and what the point that your wife hates speakers? Is it because she hates big black boxes that sit right in front of her?
If that's the case, introduce her the RBH Impression series.
I got the whole package which including 2x R55ti, 1x R5ci, 2x R5bi and i12 sub in Red Burl, for my sister.
They look beautiful.
The whole thing costs around $1500.

Those are handsome, but they're still big dark boxes taking up floor space and visual attention space. Highly doubt those will cut it.

You want to see ugly big black boxes, check out JTR speakers. I'm sure they sound incredible but they are not nice looking or wife acceptable in any way.

They actually look better than those pictures give them credit for.

Here they are when I unboxed them to test vs my LX16s and 90's era B&Ws all with MSRPs more than double...yet they held their own.

I liked the Q Acoustics Concept Stands so much I bought them for my LX16s.

The Concept 20s my friend now owns as they were only on loan from Q Acoustics for testing purposes.

They do look better to me in your photos vs. the one stock image I've seen.

They are hefty little beasts and the unusual shape, (very deep cabinet vs. height), actually "disappears" when in use so you end up looking at an impossibly tiny front face.

The cabinet is cinder block rigid and even in 2.0 they have decent extension despite the specs.

If my daughter's B&Ws were stolen tomorrow this is what I'd tell her to replace them with.

Build quality is top notch.

I'm personally tired of the big black boxes myself. Thinking about going with the Monitor Audio Silver 8's in white

I think white would distract me though when movie watching? I'm pretty sure it would actually. I like my speakers dark so they don't stand out. What's with all the hate for black speakers all of a sudden?

No hate, I have black speakers in my theater so they blend in. These will be in my living room and used mainly for music and light tv viewing. Just want something different after owning nothing but black speakers for over 10 years.

Since you're going all the way to the studs, I don't see why you wouldn't use recessed ceiling speakers. Women love them!

Some even offer paintable grilles, in case your ceilings aren't white. Though I wouldn't paint speaker grilles.

Well, Focal does custom paint colors including pink if you ever change your mind.... All I need to do is slap a HelloKitty sticker on anything, and it's automatically approved by my wife, so there's another option......

Always loathed black speakers. Mine have always been either ash, mahogany or cherry. I'm also rather keener on silver separates than black which are in vogue these days. To each their own.

I've definitely had some compromises with how the speakers should look. My wife hated the subwoofer at first, but the first time she watched The Martian at a good level, she kept saying, "oh wow!"

I'm 95% sure that was because of the subwoofer and surround sound. There's a chance it was because Matt Damon was on the screen.

Yeah we don't watch movies with actors that are better looking than me so we pretty much watch the Elephant man every day. 😀

I'm being a bit sarcastic w/ my thread title. The reality is, we already have a pair of floor standing speakers (zu omens) for the vinyl setup and another set of towers would be overkill. Sucks I don't have a dedicated HT room!

BTW - Those RBH's are beautiful!

So that's the plan for the rear surrounds (given room size 22' x 16' - see plan in original post) - is it foolish to "settle" for 5.1? Any recommendations for in ceiling surrounds? I've seen the RSL c34E mentioned, but they seem on back-order and don't look recessed.

On the in-ceiling front - we are doing 2 outdoor in-ceilings for the patio (in the underside of second story balcony) - open for suggestions there. The outdoor speakers will be tied to a different amp/zone (currently Nuvo but up for suggestions for the zoned audio amp/setup - we'll want an app driven interface if possible).

So I'm thinking the best path forward is as follows:
  • 3 CCB-8s in a custom cabinet under the TV with some kind of cover (possible a nod to the old mid-century consoles) to conceal the front sound stage. TV lifts, covering art, etc. all good ideas but sound more a PITA and the "good" in wall speakers seem to be $$$$.
  • 1 (2?) HSU subs on the far wall (built into a cabinet w/ sliding door for access).
  • 2 (or 4) in ceiling surrounds - brand TBD soliciting suggestions need to be recessed and clean.
  • Amp - TBD.

This path gets me decent sound and keeps the TV wall uncluttered (but for the TV) and we (wife) can choose whatever veneer, etc. she wants w/out compromise.

Queries
  • given the "console" housing the front sound stage is custom, would it be better for it to be backless to give the speakers room to breath or will the HSU CCB-8s perform fine in an enclosed space?
  • should I run 14 gauge wire (v 16) for this setup (guess answer is yes, incrementally not that much more $$)?

I'll probably start a separate thread on the in house zoned sound.

Finally, I *really* appreciate y'all's input and sense of humor. Wish I'd have thought to get this thread going sooner!

Happy Friday.

Well the CCB-8's are rear ported so you want to have room behind them, I would push them as far forward in their spot as possible. 14 or 16 gauge wire would be fine unless your running really long speaker runs, like the AVR or AMP is 60 feet away. And with the sub again you might look at building them into something like an end table but being that the HSU subs are front ported enclosing it in something would probably affect performance.

I have always enjoyed the sound and look of the Audio Physic speaker line, not your typical black boxes.

Definitely a good suggestion but rear ported is not a huge issue if crossing over at 80hz as the port doesn't come into play until 50hz or so.
