I actually blew one of the woofers on my Sierra's, but had no tweeter issues for the 2 years or so that I owned them. In my opinion, they make better music speakers than home theater. Good discussion!

Well, the graph tell us that under some conditions, the FR of both speaker can be very good! To compare them to each would be hard, ideally, you would need to measure each in the same chamber at the same time with the same mic...

You can be sure each company used whatever looked best to them!

Both are admirably flat.

Nobody posts their worst dyno pull.

I have no doubt that both are typical, though.... and not statistical outliers. I know this for a fact with the A2.4.

Right on....but....not necessarily what can be expected in one's home. The "trick" is finding a speaker that can actually come close to those results in our own homes. lol.....especially off-axis, where quite often many speakers get placed, and some especially renowned speakers that actually have "bad" off-axis sound start bouncing that bad off axis hf off of our room walls ceilings, floors and furnishings. Off-axis graphs are a lot more useful unless one intends to listen in one dedicated listening position with perfect speaker/listening positioning in a "treated" room .

Nothing is more useful than listening with our own ears in our actual listening room.

graphs are useless because they dont indicate what we hear. They are good at showing they are reproducing them correctly(but how many companies do that)?

ta ke 5 different companies any price range and compare graphs...then write a review without looking at graphs...that will be a good review

Hello Mike.

The group of speakers I auditioned were different from the ones that are listed here (except for the RBH). And I was looking to go very inexpensively for my movie setup (but not on the subwoofer). I auditioned the Sierra’s because I was flat out curious and my son wanted to hear them, and especially the CMT-340’s.

To answer your question, there was only one speaker that I liked slightly better, and it was less than half the price. That would be the JBL 530 because of its really smooth, effortless midrange and its 3-dimensional sound stage (the best I’ve heard from any bookshelf speaker that I've auditioned). I still think the Sierra is overall a better speaker … a better high end and it sure looks a lot nicer, but if I wanted a speaker for music only in a small room, I’d take the JBL, even though their output won’t match the Sierra’s. Obviously, I already own the speaker that I’ve always wanted for music, so when auditioning speakers, my eye was on value, and mainly for movie sound reproduction, although I test all speakers for music first. I also preferred the EMP Tek R5Bi’s upper midrange (very pristine) and its surprisingly large soundstage. But it’s just not quite in the class of the Sierra 2 (as one would expect at $225/pair).

But understand, I only had an hour to audition the Sierra 2’s (the other hour was spent listening to the Sierra towers). Add in that the room was extremely well dampened (I prefer a little more airy and lively room that gives me a more live concert feel, where I felt the room caused the music to sound like in a small studio — very accurate and detailed though). In other words, I think the Sierra 2’s would have performed better in my house than at Ascend Acoustics, because of my preferences toward live music, but that’s only an assumption. I did feel on first several tracks I played, that the Sierra 2’s were a little colored and dark sounding, but by the end of the audition I didn’t notice it as much, and sat back and enjoyed myself.

Movie area: EMP Tek E5Bi (were rebadged to R5Bi), RBH/EMP Tek R55Ti, PSA S3000i, Denon X2000, Oppo BDP 83.

I would add the new Paradigm Persona series, they are listed as +/-2db over a wide frequency range, and have perhaps the best technically performing midrange driver short of the Raidho diamond midrange.

I never looked at one graph before/after buying a speaker. Did my research on these boards, went out, bought way too many speakers, and just listened. Good ole fashioned Ear science.

Nice write up. Love reading reviews like this.

It's nice to see people actually prefer what sounds good to them in their own home or own ears and not that a graph tells them what sounds better. Graphs are a good reference point but there is a reason we have so many choices to make in life. We all like different things.

I have Sierra Towers w/RAAL, Horizon w/RAAL, Sierra 2s and Sierra Lunas on the way. I found the Sierra 2s performing really well with any kind of music (rock, jazz, classical, etc) but the Sierra Towers w/RAAL are just outstanding with jazz and vocals. That dedicated mid range driver does wonders. Listening to Norah Jones, Adele and Lalah Hathaway on the Sierra Towers is just amazing. It takes some time to get used to the sound of the Sierras but after that time you get addicted to their signature sound. They are so far the best speakers I ever listened to below $5000.

Both are impressively flat. It looks like the Sierra 2's are slightly elevated above 10K hz. I wonder if this characteristic could create the impression that more details are being pulled from the recording.

Excellent post! I also feel not every sonic parameter can accurately be measured and that all of us hear slightly differently (shape of ear, age, etc)

I agree with much of what you wrote. I am very fond of the Studio 530. It is special. The S2s are definitely better speakers... They present more detail than the JBLs.

The JBLs have a classic fifties cinema sound. For the money the JBLs are kind of magical. I had them for a year or so. Had they been a bit less Darth Vadaresque I might have kept them. In the end though the S2s just ended upgradeitis for me. 3 years in and I just don't long for better.
