I purchased the Pioneer pk52fs 5 years ago and have been more than satisfied with their performance in both music and home theater.

To me, they sound fantastic at the price point. I was impressed enough by their performance that I've decided to upgrade to the Pioneer elite speaker line in the near future.

Not sure why the pioneers are getting knocked for being too warm for home theater, maybe I just haven't listened to enough speakers for a proper reference point. For comparison I listened to a much more expensive 5.1 klipsch rp-260f demo at Best Buy and found them to be way too bright compared to what I was used to... To the point I found it distracting. Personally I preferred the sound of the entry level Pioneer towers which are a fraction of the cost.

LG OLED65B7A, Denon AVR-X4400H, Kef R200C Center, 4x Kef R300s, 4 Kef Q50A Atmos Modules, 2x Hsu Research VTV-15H MK2s

The Elites will likely answer your question compared to the base Pioneers.

Two opposite extremes.

There are lots of speakers without the Klipsch treble emphasis that would crush the Pioneers in terms of detail/clarity, and cost not that much more.

Also, if you ever add a center speaker, for the love of God do not get the "matching" Pio C-22.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

I found the SSCS3 for 125$ more for the pair.
Is it really worth it? Having a hard time finding reviews

I preferred the Core bookshelves over the towers myself. So to me, no, not really worth it over the bookshelves.

But the Cores in either flavor were better than the Pioneers, to my ears.

When I heard the Sony Core bookshelves and towers side by side I found that the bookshelves had more clarity and overall punch than the towers. I think the best reason to get the towers would be to avoid buying stands for the bookshelves but I would know that I made that compromise in quality for convenience.

If you don't already have a subwoofer, then you'd be far better off with the Core bookshelves + subwoofer.

$118/pair shipped here:
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS5-3-...A5DGMMSYFST8PY

Emotiva S8, $200 shipped:

It's weird how there develops a feedback loop in here. Certain speakers get repeatedly mentioned, which in turn generates more sales for those speakers, which in turn reinforces their continual repeated mentions, etc.

It's also interesting how eventually some of the most repeatedly mentioned speakers here on AVS (apparently) lose their luster. People looking for the new/novel? Better alternatives replace them? Whatever the reason, they seem to totally drop out of the AVS recommendation-list rotation. Ascend CBM-170 & HTM-200, HSU HB-1 MK2, anything from Aperion or Axiom, for example, come to mind. Go back 4-5 years and you'd be hard-pressed NOT to find the Ascend CBM-170 on nearly every suggestion list. And it's a speaker which is still available today and which still compares very well to the competition in the "budget" speaker category.

Not so much a complaint but an observation of what I find to be a rather curious phenomenon.

Anyway, here is another speaker which rarely gets mentioned but probably should be listed with the current crop of frequently cited options. Especially now with their current sale going on:

I used to both own and frequently advocate for, the 170s, always with the qualification that "well you have to be ok with its strange boxy shape and relative lack of wow-factor." However nowadays the competition has pretty much caught up and some have even overtaken them, at the $300/pair pricepoint. I still recommend Ascend 170/200/340 from time to time as well as the higher up Ascend models, of course, but far less widely. $300/pair JBL Studio 230s and Emotiva B1s, $250/pair KEF Q100s, the stupendous $120/pair Sony Core bookshelves. It's suddenly become a buyer's market...if the buyer knows what to look for and where!

At 50 percent off those are indeed great deals here in the US, at MSRP not so much.

HSU, Ascend are definitely often recommended, Aperion and Axiom less so but that was true years ago as well.

Here's a list of AVS favorites.

AVS FAVORITES: BOOKSHELF SPEAKER PAIRS WITH >4.9" MAIN DRIVER AND UNDER $500 MSRP

**equals free returns ^^equals $10/ box returns

NOTES: >note that most speakers do not actually reach within 10hz of their stated bass extension; check pro reviews

>CRUTCHFIELD carries many speakers that Best Buy does not listed below. Their return policy is very inexpensive and longer in time.
$10 per package, (not tower speakers), within 60days.

>check center speaker prices before choosing a pair for a surround system as some companies have VERY high prices for centers

Bingo! good options for sure -- they should be on a short list, and should hold their own against many of the popular brands listed -- thanks for the link
