Well, I guess it doesn't have to. But the extra shielding might deter a squirrel from chewing it up...maybe?

I'd also avoid using peanut butter to lubricate the wire when you pull it through the ceiling

Big +1

Myself, I would get 12AWG, but 14AWG might suffice.

Like the quote above, I also strongly suggest that you get wires that are in wall rated, they should say CL2 or CL3 on them.
The main reason, is for your home insurance, now a day insurance companies like to be able to deny a claim for any excuse.
When buying in bulk on line, the difference of price is around $10, for a 100ft reel, same as the difference of pricing between 12 or 14AWG, so for $10-20, it is a cheap price for a piece of mind.

The wire gauge considerations are about the resistance. The famous site, see the table:
http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm

The wire ratings are for fire protection. You (and your local building code) don't want burning, toxic insulation during a fire. So a CL2 or CL3 riser rating.
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/inwallrating.htm

If they are running in a plenum (HVAC duct) the standard is higher.

Awesome, thank you guys for the quick responses, I’ve never even bought speaker wire before, just used the junk the speaker came with. Can someone please kindly point me to a place where I can buy the 12 gauge in wall certified? Thank you.

Access Series 12AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Speaker Wire, 100ft from Monoprice.

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=2817

Monoprice does not have free shipping but amazon is still more expensive (especially if you have to pay tax), but Amazon gets you the product quicker.

Good wires, I had some and very well constructed

The only reason I did not use that wire, was because I was making my own fancy speakers wires with a sleeve on them.
And the twisted look did not look right.

But as wire, absolutely nothing wrong with this one.
Good quality, cheap and in-wall/ceiling rated

This is good stuff. Very flexible. I have used some black cased wire from mono price in the past that was too stiff.

I’m running this for all my inwalls and in-ceiling speakers. Does the job.

Do yourself a favor and buy a 500' roll instead of the 250'...if you're doing 4 speakers at 50-60' each, that's uncomfortably close to 250. Plus the cost of ordering another small roll is more than if you'd gone big in the first place.
