Need help with speaker placement

Hello! I currently have a 7.1 surround system in my home theater. I am using Klipsch KG4.5s for the front 2 channels and just bought 2 more 4.5s. Right now, I have all small speakers as surrounds. Should I place the second pair of Klipsches as the side surrounds or the rear surrounds in my 7.1 setup? Not sure what will give a more convincing surround effect -- having the moire powerful surrounds on the sides or in the back. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Most soundtracks are mixed in 5.1. I would use the better speakers as side surrounds and the other 2 as either front height or on ceiling atmos channels if your AVR supports it.

Kef Q100 FL/FR,SL/SR, Q200C, SVS SB-2000, Denon AVR-X3400H, , Panasonic 50" Plasma, Xbox One.
Bedroom: JBL Loft 50 , Loft 20, Bic F-12, Denon AVR-S710W, PS3, 32" Insigna LED.

Thanks for the quick reply. I would still like to keep the 7.1 setup and not change to 5.1. What would be the best option when in 7.1? Larger side or rear speakers?

Ideally you'd want all the surrounds the same. Short of that, I'd put the larger/better speakers as side surrounds.

I agree w/ @pase22 I’d put the new larger bookshelf’s in the side position. Rears aren’t nearly as important

When sounds move from the fronts to the surrounds they shouldn't change. So better to use the second pair of 4.5s at your sides, since they are adjacent to the fronts. Use the dissimilar speakers behind you, where our human hearing is not as good and a little less apt to notice differences. IF you can eventually replace them with a third pair of 4.5s, that would be optimal.

Thanks for the responses! I'll switch out the 4.5s to the side surrounds.
