Emotiva: 3 Towers as LCR vs 2 Towers and the C2?

With the Emotiva sale, the two options below are basically the same cost for me.

Which would you guys choose?

I have the vertical space to fit towers across the front stage.

Emotiva T1 towers x 3 as LCR = $950

Emotiva T1 towers x 2 as LR, and C2 as Center (with 36 in stand) = $1,050

Reviews of the C2 have been great, but I've always heard if you fit towers or bookshelves vertically, that's the way to go.

T1's 629.10 per pair...Did you call them?

BluesDaddy56 08-26-2018 08:39 AM

I assume you either have an accoustically transparent screen or your display is mounted high enough to allow the T1 to fit underneath it. Also assuming Emotiva will sell you just one T1 (I don't know any reason they would not), then that is what I would do. (Oh, also assuming WAF is met with three towers). The C2 is a fantastic center.

WAF was a worry. She approved the Emotiva "look" but I don't think she knows there may be three towers...

Yes, TV is mounted and bottom of display is 47 inches, so I can place 3 towers along the front stage.

I just didn't know if 3 towers as LCR was preferable in sound to using the C2.

Order 3 towers AND a C2 and return what doesn't work best. (Easy for ME to say. :D)

No brainer, I'd do 3 x T1s then, and offer human sacrifices to the gods on a regular basis for your exceptionally good fortune. :)

Didn't know that Emotiva will sell the T1s as singles though.

human sacrifice coming up then...

OK so now the question is --

Is $400 more worth the cost for three T2's across the front vs three T1's....

LOL. That might be an option...they don't pay for return shipping though.

Depends on size of room, subwoofers you have, and the risk of the "what am I missing" syndrome if you go with T1s rather than T2s. Buyer's remorse works both ways.

True...

I sit about 11 feet away in a 14 x 28 x 13 room. 5,100 cu ft

Planning on having dual Rythmik LV12R's or Hsu VFT2 Mk5's

If HT is your priority not music, I'd get the T1s and put the $400 savings into a pair of VTF-3s instead of VTF-2s.

mpk1970 08-26-2018 09:39 AM

Man here's the thing
I listen to the T2s with music on a regular basis NO subs

You can't play the subs all the time....with the T2s it literally sounds like subs are there...I was in my bathroom last night listening with club songs and could hear the bass booming, quite impressive being bathroom on other side of house....and I had volume relatively low at like 50 which is nothing basically

If you EVER plan on listening to towers without subs for music in 2.0.....it is worth it. T2s I imagine much more dynamic

I didn't care about a few hundred bucks to get best in line
However, if we were talking T1 costing 700 and T2s cost say $1500+ then I wouldn't do it....but $300 bucks more didn't matter to me for something that is without a doubt better in every aspect

Ah...yes, good idea. Center and sub should be first priority.

Tedd 08-26-2018 09:45 AM

WAF is three towers, with an acoustically transparent screen. :)

I take it it sounds better when listening to music to turn off the subs? 2.0 > 2.1?

Right you are! Wonder why Emotiva doesn't.

And why don't they sell B1s in singles too? Does it save them so much money to have 2 speakers inside one box? The mysterious workings of an accounting department... :)

Emotiva will direct sell factory renewed units singly. I just emailed them and they said sure.

WAF has raised its ugly head...
(metaphorically speaking)

If I do go with three T1/2's, placement restrictions for the center tower would mean the rear port would be blocked completely or would have maybe 2 to 4 inches of clearance.

Is this a sound killer?

The port comes into play below 80hz at higher volume. If crossed over at 80-90hz you should be fine with 3-4" clearance. In ideal conditions, you want to give them as much space as possible, but like most of us you do what you can with the space and uncontrollable restrictions. Give them as much space as you can get away with. sound quality should be fine as long as they're not stuffed in a corner.

If the tower is crossed over at 80Hz it should be fine, esp. if foam port plugs are used (ask Emotiva if they ship with them or not).

I tried port plugs for awhile and the speakers sounded bloated to me. I'd try with and without the plugs and go with what sounds best in your room.

gajCA 08-26-2018 12:00 PM

Another vote for three towers you lucky dog.

whoa, I didn't know you bought Emotiva speakers! Or was this with different speakers? I think the effect of port plugging varies depending on the specific speaker.

leecreek 08-26-2018 12:47 PM

Plugged my T2's as they are 9 inches from the wall. Ok'd by a call from Emo but YMMV. No bloat here.

Excellent to hear.

I might get 5 inches from wall to back of speaker, so plugging it is.

As far as dual subs, both Hsu and Rythmik are comparable price-wise for ported 12", but to move up to 15" Hsu has the edge in price. Big edge.

Exactly!

Would much rather have smaller towers and bigger subs for HT, and maybe the opposite for music.

Rhythmik are more music oriented
HSU prob more HT

Ok. Order has been made....crossing my fingers I did the right thing.

Two Hsu VTF-3 Mk5 HP subs on the way. Man, shipping is a beast on those.

Three Emotiva T1's; two B1's; and four E1's. Shipping free.

I will report back once I have them hooked up.
