Energy CB-20 vs Sony Cores SSCS5

I currently have a set of Energy Take Classics as my fronts and surrounds (with a Dayton sub-1200 12" sub and a mediocre center i.e. JBL Loft-20). One of my surrounds went bad (random distortion noises when playing audio).

I decided to move one of my classics from the front to replace the bad surround and replace the fronts with something new.

First got a pair of Energy CB-20's which were on discount. I figured these would be a good match for the take surrounds since they are from the same company.

The CB-20's are decent.... didn't wow me. Ran them pretty consistently for ~3 days to break them in and hoping they will get better. They did not. Sounded a little boxy and didn't quite have the punch I was expecting.

I just received a pair of Sony Core's (SSCS5) to compare.... and wow, are those speakers awesome! The room sounds like it's filled with sound now. I did not expect them to be as good as they are. They have a good bass punch too, especially compared to the CB-20s, which have bigger woofers.

I am very impressed with the Sonys!

Currently have a set of Infinity Reference 253's (floor standing) to compare to the Sonys. Will see how the Sony's hold up against those.

I find the Cores surprisingly decent considering their price. And even more-so when they go for <$100. They are a notch below Kef Q100s to my ears, but it's not like there is a humongous difference in quality between them.

If they had an andrew jones signature on the back, I expect they would be more popular than they are. I still find it weird how some review sites claimed (or maybe still claim) the BS22s are the best budget speaker and overlook the Cores entirely.

For music listening only, I might agree. Not sure, as I primarily use them for HT. There I find the Kefs have a bit more 'sparkle' which works well w/ movies.

I'm not sure if I'd like that 'sparkle' so much if I was listening to music for hours on end though.

I tried the BS22's briefly when Frys had them on special. I didn't see what all the fuss was about. They didn't sound that much better than my Take Classics (at least not to me)... plus, I really hated the way they looked, so I ended up returning them.

Most noticeable difference will be that the Refs should be able to play a lot louder without distortion. The Cores are awesome at moderate volumes and crossed over to a sub, but when pushed near reference levels their limitations quickly become obvious, esp. if running full range. The Core towers and centers though are reportedly not anywhere as good as the bookshelves.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

another vote for the cores. The only reason I didn't go with them is that I'm holding out for something that is a bigger step up from my current system since I don't like to upgrade often.

emotiva b1's are darn similar..a little smoother with the amt tweeter... and better treble extension..

the phiharmonic aa+ might work for you as well .. a good source says they are the same "kind" of presentation as the cores and b1's ...

I'm currently looking at those for my office where I'm currently using yamaha powered monitors. I'll probably try the AA's first while I wait for the CG5's to get released. The HT has to wait because I trying to decide where to remodel or move.

I have both the Energy CB-20's and Sony CS5's. Both are good speakers for their price points. The CB-20's do require a lengthy break-in period, but once they are settled in they have a really nice, balanced sound. For 6.5" woofers the cabinet size is relatively small, coming in around the size of most speakers with 5.25" woofers. I'm using the Energy CB-20's with the CC-10 center in my very small theater room set up and I've been very pleased with them. Aesthetically speaking, the Energy speakers look a bit more stylish. Both speakers benefit greatly from a sub to anchor the low end, but the CS5's are a bit thin in bass on their own, more so than the CB-20's. IMO, both are edged out by the Polk Signature speakers, which generally cost a bit more.

I used to have the Energy CB-10 and they didn't really wow me either. Kind of muddy sounding and the top and bottom end didn't really impress me at all. I think I liked the Energy RC-Micro set more (even though they had no bass at all due to their size). I also have the Cores and the Infinity Reference R162/R152 bookshelf speakers and the Infinity are a step up in every category to me. Cleaner sounding with better bass and treble. The Cores are still pretty good though for their cost.

Yeah.. I figured the CB-20's would start sounding better as I got closer to the 100 hour break-in (which is insanely long), but I couldn't wait that long. Out the box, the Sony's just sounded better, and I expect they will get sound even nicer once I hit the break in period (whatever that is).

I was surprised that the Sony's bass sounded better than the CB-20's even though they have smaller woofers. That's probably due to the break-in as well.

The Sonys don't put out much bass, but what they do have is nice and tight. Try positioning them closer to the wall to get a little more output.

I love this thread. Years ago I was searching for some bookshelves and I had the CB-20's on my list. I got RC-10's, B&W 685's, Paradigm Mini Monitor 6's, and PSB Image B6's instead. I just noticed the CB20's are only $150 now on Amazon and thought about picking up a pair but think I'll hold off now based on your experience. Might as well grab some Sony Cores lol. The vintage Mirage 360's I have are really something special though. In hindsight, I probably should have just kept the B6's or Mini Monitors and saved a lot of money!

If you aren't in a hurry to get speakers, I would wait about a month. I believe the past two years the Sony Core speakers have all been about half price around the end of November. Seems like I paid like $76 a pair for the CS5's near the end of last year.

And a third.

I'd also recommend keeping at eye out on Polk S15/20s... I expect bargains to be found as the newer revision is coming out soon. I've already seen the S15 direct from polk at $150 and it may go lower.
