Best Bookshelf $1000 - $3000

I got a little upset after reading this seeing a bunch of speakers that we "never" talk about.
What would your guys pick be?

The list isn't a bad one the Focalsl are available at Crutchfield with $10/box returns within 60 days which is a big plus and the B&Ws are available at Best Buy with free returns.

But I'd still likely go with the Philharmonic Audio BMRs...even before the wildly enthusiastic reception they received, unanimously IIRC, during the recent BMR "road show."

I'm a fan of WhatHiFis subjective reviews and they HATED the Monitor Audio studios, were lukewarm on the B&Ws and Tannoys, enjoyed the Focals, KEFs and Dalis and didn't test the LSiMs, which get overall good reviews, or the odd Fyssions.

I really enjoy reading the continuing Revel thread. There's lots of good info. there from a variety of members, although audio wisdom from Dr. Toole is icing on the cake.

For me I would lean toward the Phil BMR -- then the Revel Performa series -- then the likes of Monitor Audio Gold and Focal Aria

There is not much, if any, that is going to best the BMR's under $3K. But, right now the Dynaudio Excite X14's can be had for $1K. Given that they are normally $1,300 a set that is a deal no doubt. Furthermore, the Excite the X18's are $1,500 set when normally $1,800 a set. Both are tremendous bargains as well.

I forgot to mention the KEF R300's are now $1399! They are normally $1799. Acc4Less usally sells the R300's B-stocks for $1099! However, right now they do not have any in stock. Here is a link:

At $3K, the Dynaudio Special 40 is a very good choice. KEF LS50 for $1,500 are also very good.

I second the LS50, I also think the Revel M105 should be part of it and I didn't realize this until recently but PSB makes some really good speakers as well, it doesn't seem like they get much attention around here.

A +1 on Revel is easy given my signature. But I have another suggestion.

These forums have many enthusiasts about gear they know -- one reason I come here is to learn about gear from owners. But leveraging other sources of information can be useful, too. After narrowing your list, it's usually worth the effort to find test data and professional reviews on the candidate speakers as that can sometimes produce surprises... good and bad. Think of this as one more way to reduce your purchase risk. Lastly, find a way to listen to the candidate speakers. Sometimes you can find out in a few minutes what hours of posts, test data and reviews can't quite express.

Good luck!

You can get Focal 1008 be’s at Music Direct for $3k. 60 day returns. Also, the aforementioned KEF r300’s at their close out price is a killer deal. I went from LS50’s to the r300’s and haven’t looked back.

They (WhatHiFi) absolutely raved about the Monitor Audio Silver 100's...enough so to convince me to buy a pair (and Crutchfield). By far, some of the best 2-channel bookshelf's that I've ever heard and a sub is truly optional with them.

I wonder if the Silver 50 would be a better sounding speaker if you were going to mate it with a sub anyway. I can't image the upper mid range dispersion being great with a 8" driver in a 2 way design. 5 1/4" drivers seems to be the sweet spot for me for 2 way bookshelf's.

I'm going to have to take another listen to the silver series, thanks.

IMHO, the PHil-BMR is the best value speaker around at ~1500/pr... That is a one really well designed 3 way speaker with a RAAL and you won't find that combo in any other speaker in the price range. And frosting on the cake, the new cabinets that Dennis use look GREAT!

I'm not a big fan of passive radiators on Paper but they do show up on a few designs of music focused speaker designers.

I enjoyed listening to music via a Definitive Technology bookshelf speaker with a passive radiator—it was the D9 or D11, I think.

i guess both the s300 & s400 are very competitive with anything in the price range..i'm not sure that most of us would be *as* impressed , but there might be something to it..

i think i might actually like the s300 more , he indicated it was detailed yet warm, that sounds like i might like that.. the s400 , the way he described the s400 sounds more like the classic monitor... the passive radiator does make me wonder though.. i don't think i have ever heard one on a book that size...
