The B1s begin to show signs of strain a bit earlier, maybe around 80db.

However, to the B1s' credit I seldom feel the urge to go much above 70db because they already provide very rich and satisfying detail at that volume. I would expect the T-Z to do the same if not a little better due to the extra woofer, and the T1 to provide another step up in higher-SPL performance.

Oops been reading that thread wrong then. But I guess my point has been further justified strain at 80dB isn’t exactly optimal. For me at least. I was cranking my Cerwins to at least 90dB, I would hope way more because it was clearly heard across the street

No, I think the 340SE were the correct choice for you.

~ Are you a "geek hobbyist" obsessed with squeezing out that last 5-10% improvement? The economy will thank you...especially the Chinese one. Or are you more of a get-set-and-forget "casual user" who simply wants to increase your enjoyment of movies, TV and gaming? Relax, HT isn't rocket science, nor does it have to cost an arm and a leg---especially if you ignore the aforementioned vocal minority. And remember to smile...it's just a silly hobby, after all. :)

I contacted SVS to get the return started. I’m currently heavily researching the Ascend CMT340SE. I’m also interested in going with Emotiva T1, but the concern is my receiver won’t have enough power.

I just keep wondering about how different the Chanes would be. They were said to be “better” than the Ascends because of the leaf tweeter but the 6.5” woofer vs 5 1/4” woofer is what I’m stuck on. How can it be that good when it’s missing that much cone area. I don’t doubt that the AMT tweeter is better but what about bass extension and dynamics?

Regardless, love these things. The only limiting factor is the fact I can’t max out my receiver running these thing full range because I don’t think there’s a speaker can take 100 watts full range without distorting. Besides maybe some towers with large diameter woofers. My Full Marty will change that though

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

If you are truly a volume freak AND you have an underpowered entry-level AVR that might be worth considering.

However, in order to determine if you truly ARE a volume freak or not, I would get this freeware and use it:

or:

Lol ok I’ll quit worrying about it. I’m in an apartment so I can’t blare misc anyways. I think I’m ordering the T1 or B1 from Amazon and trying out. If I like I’ll order the C2. If not I’ll send back free via prime, then order the Ascend CMT340SE. Just can’t swallow those shipping costs right away.

I vote you keep the SVS a bit longer since you will be returning them anyways and you have 45 days. Compare them, see what you think, do a write up like my JBL vs Ascend thread, and hope you help out the next person that comes across the same problem.

I wanted to give everyone an update. After a ton of research I decided on the Ascend 340s. I called Ascend to discuss my choice and they quickly told me I could get the rear speakers too for only $40 more so I jumped on the package deal. Basically got 5 speakers for $100 more than the SVS I originally ordered....the difference being shipping. Now I have to find stands for the rears. Any suggestions? My couch is against the wall and I can’t wall mount the speakers.

The Chanes are some seriously good speakers. The split gap woofer has some voodoo going on inside, the bass from them is better than my E55Ti towers. They are effortless and maintain composure at all volumes.

I’ve got the A1.4 in a stereo setup for music and haven’t even considered adding a sub. Now I think they do benefit from a capable amp, they sounded much thinner on my Denon AVR, but the Parasound makes them sing.

5.1: Samsung PN60F5300 | Sony BDP-S1700 | Denon AVR-1713 | EMP E55Ti | EMP E56Ci | EMP E5Bi | Outlaw Ultra-X12

2.0: Oppo DV-980H | Apple Airport Express | Topping D30 | Parasound HCA-1500a | Chane A1.4

Yeah that’s what I keep hearing darn it Jon. Why do you have to be such a great engineer. You couldn’t just leave Dave and Dennis to do their thing. Now I gotta hear these things.

They are a joy for sure, the leaf tweeter is very detailed but doesn’t become harsh at all. I’d definitely give them a shot, though I’d recommend something better than an AVR to get the most out of them.

I know... I really want some Emotiva amps... but that’s gotta wait. I’ve spent soooo much money on everything else lol. Soon though. Very soon.

Yeah in due time, can’t do it all at once for sure.

I’ve been on the hunt for a matching Parasound preamp but they are hard to come by, though that’s half the fun for me.

Also planning to build some nice cables soon.

Do you have a few feet one either side of the couch to use these stands near their maximum 54" height?

You want them high in your situation to minimize localization issues when seated at either end of the couch.

They’re the HVL-1. I can’t find much info on them. I have a table on the right side of my couch and just a stand lamp on the other so I may be able to make that work.

Wow, you got two excellent HVL-1s for $40?

That's an amazing deal for what is a bit of a cult speaker on AVS designed by the Ascend designer.

Didn't know Ascend sold them.

That price is stunning.

Yes and no; same designer, different "brand" name, (Wavecrest), but, in essence it is an Ascend speaker.

So you got a pair for $40 more, not the still excellent $158/pair price, right?

Gosh I’m starting to look like the people I see on here. Stands came in and I’m waiting for my Ascend’s yet. I like the SVS prime’s but I think the Ascend is a better value.
