You mean you didn't get the ones from Japan for $833.99? lol. Wow $160 is an amazing price. I'm tempted to grab them for surrounds.

The JBL Studio 230 are here, and they look like new -- still in the early stages, but they have the sound of a winner -- and a crazy good deal (no brainer) for $160 delivered.

Someone on YouTube opened up the 230 and did a break down

Interesting for sure. I demoed the 220's and was impressed with their bass output and overall sound. I ordered a set of the 230's and they will be here on Friday. I'm already having second thoughts after seeing Z's review today on the Arena 130's. The silk dome tweeters in the 130's might be closer to what I'm looking for.

I am not troubled by the Studio 230 tweeters, they are clean and not harsh or edgy sounding. I have owned the Arena B17 (same as the 130) and the Studio 230 is a nice and clean step up, and has better resolution, detail, definition, and depth over the Arena series. The Arena series were also coarse and grainy sounding to me

If you are really seeking or looking for a silk dome tweeter, then keep the Canton GLE or Boston A series in mind -- however, check out the 230 when they arrive as you have 30 days to decide

the new b1's are in, they sound just as nice as the other pair , maybe a bit more of an edge in the treble , but i assume that will go away in a couple hours of use...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=j8-5XTR9CXs

I remember someone comparing them to the SVS Ultra Bookshelves and saying if the SVS were a 10/10, then the 230’s would be a 9/10.

Do you agree with this? Why or why not? Or what would you compare them with if you haven’t heard the SVS Ultras? Can they even touch your (now gone) M105’s?

Do you have any interest in the LSiM 703’s that keep going on sale for $500 a pair at Adorama? Looks like quite the steal at ~60% off. I wish to try them soon but I have a couple of other speakers soon to be on my plate. Review of them coming out soon

I have not listened to the SVS Ultra -- and I will not pay their price -- it would not surprise me if the 230 was breathing on their back. One thing nice about the 230 is that there is no midrange happy bump. I have to do some more listening, but they are competitive with the Canton GLS 2 (Chrono) speakers. The Studio 230 is about 80% of the highly rated Studio 530 speakers which I use to own. .... I have been looking at the Polk LSIM, so maybe some day it will happen.

what I do remember is :

Pro's- wide soundstage, good thump, dynamics, great for HT, imaging a little forward/aggressive similar to Ultra's--

Con's- music so-so, mid/highs I thought struggled with details, a little "off" from clarity of other speakers in this price range, completely fell apart with high volumes

For HT, definitely one of the Top speakers to buy in this price range
For music, 2.0, I probably wouldnt pick these over a few others in this price range

They captured me right at the start I remember but the more I listened to music and not use in HT, the more I realized this wasn't the perfect speaker I had hope.

Looking forward to Zieg's analysis

Yeah I remember my 130’s fell apart at higher volumes. I find it interesting how you say they would make a great theater speaker but the highs struggled with detail. I would see how that would suck the fun out of music though.

Well, I guess we’re both on to the next set of speakers. I got a pair from KLH headed to me. Can’t wait to listen to them.

Did you ever decide on whether you were going to wrap your T2’s or swap them out for something? The Polk LSiM’s perhaps? Such a great deal. Or maybe even stepping into the Revel or Canton arena?

I’m a little confused as to why their Albany bookshelves are only 5.25” woofers. At $480 a pair, that’s a real stiff sell. Same with the $380 4” woofer bookshelves. We shall see if they live up to their supposed performance, with the Albany’s F3 speccing to the mid 30’s with an efficiency of 92 dB.

But their Kendall towers look to be quite the part. Those are definitely on my list, especially if these Albany’s can blow my socks off.

I almost bought the Albany, but they are somewhat suspect to me and the price does not move me.

I am still listening -- we may or may not see eye to eye -- Take Five by Dave Brubeck will give me good insight -- but the JBL does not have the forward push of the Q A 3021 and is a clear and clean step up over the SuperOne 2.1

You did like the Arena speakers -- and these are a clear step up and with no midrange happy bump (boost), and no coarse or grainy sound like the Arena -- these are also a step above the JBL Studio 130. I am still going to check with some horns, violins, and high range female voices. .... in the end their is something out there for everyone.

As Russ is starting down the "audition and flip" path as he moves forward there is a very very good chance my friends who's house burned will be getting those once he's through with them.

Initial thought was Q Acoustics but the positive press and real wood veneer on the KLH vs fake on the QAs might seal the deal as they love real wood as do I.

If Russ won't give them up at the very least he'll let me borrow them for my friends to audition...maybe compare them to my LX16s and my buddy's Concept 20s in late March when the wife and her sister go on a week long cruise!

That’s correct! When I have finished my time with them, I’ll come by and drop them off along with your Sansui so you and your friends can audition them. If their specs are even slightly true, these should be a very formidable 2 channel setup with a supposed F3 of 35hz.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

If Russ won't give them up at the very least he'll let me borrow them for my friends to audition...maybe compare them to my LX16s and my buddy's Concept 20s in late March when the wife and her sister go on a week long cruise!
that's a great idea.. i think there a lots of opportunities for a guy to find the right set up in that scenario...

We shall see if they live up to their supposed performance, with the Albany’s F3 speccing to the mid 30’s with an efficiency of 92 dB.

But their Kendall towers look to be quite the part. Those are definitely on my list, especially if these Albany’s can blow my socks off.
If you've owned speakers with a quality wood veneer you would understand the pricing.

But if the sound doesn't live up to the price we'll be finding out vs the $500/pair Concept 20s and originally $798/pair LX16s, (which I paid $398 for).

Sue is gone from March 23rd through the 29th.

I'll get my SPL meter back from my brother in law to match SPLs, (curiously the Concept 20s and LX16s have identical sensitivity in my home though not on their specs).

If you can't make it you'll just have to trust my comparison!

Completely forgot that it was a real wood veneer. That’ll be a nice change. Sort of tired of my Ascends satin black finish. That’s why I like those White F206’s. The black trim on the gloss white is beautiful. I would rather get the M106’s but they don’t make it in white

That would be a great shootout though, Concept 20’s, LX16’s, CMT340’s, Albany’s, and whatever mystery pair I have at the time lol! Maybe I’ll get some more JBL’s with their free returns.

We can always use your Umik also
@zieglj01 sorry for taking over your thread!

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

Sure but I think I'll pass on the added complexity of Umik+REW though SPL meter should be fine.

We'll do it in 2.0; maybe with the MiniDSP crossing over at 60hz with the subs off to take care of any bass advantage one speaker might have vs the other as rarely if ever are these speakers used without a sub.

Saying that though my buddy with the C20s listens in 2.0!

The thread is not restricted -- feel free to continue -- still toying with the 230, but I did give them 13.24689 minutes to break in

speaking of which.... a quick update on the b1's , they have a "hard edge " on the highest treble register that isn't present on the older pair .. i only have 3-4 hours on them , so i assume this *might * be the same phenomenon that i experienced with the other pair early on.. my guess is it will mellow rather quickly .. my guess was it was maybe 10 or so hours in last time .. i guess this may be an "AMT thing"... just my observation
