Deciding on Bookshelf speakers - HSU HB-1 MK2 vs. JBL ARENA 130 vs. Chane A1.4?

Looking to get some bookshelf speakers and hoping to get some input. These are all roughly $300/pair, tweeters are all different types so curious to see if anyone’s had experience with these before. I’m currently running a HSU VTF-3 MK3 sub in a 2800cuft (with vaulted ceiling) room. I’m using these mostly for movies. Coming from some old POLK TSI500s for L/R and matching CS20 for center, powered by a Yamaha TSR-5830 7.2 AVR. Would prefer same model speakers for L/C/R but considering running phantom as I sit in the sweet spot when watching movies and prefer this to a dedicated center. I’m looking at these speakers so far:

1. HSU HB-1 MK2 (I live in So Cal so I can pick these up in Anaheim)

2. JBL ARENA 130

3. CHANE A1.4

Let me know which you would recommend and why? I know there are TONS of other options so let me know if you recommend something different than the ones mentioned above.

You should add the Ascend CBM170SE to your list and I would also take that over the JBL and HSU. It’s a direct competitor with the A1.4 and both of them are in a different league than the HSU and JBL. I recently did a write up comparing the Ascend CMT340 (MTM Version of the CBM) and the JBL Arena 130. Maybe you’d like to check that out.

But as far as your list goes, the A1.4 would be the best.

You should also add the Studio 230 by JBL to your list as it commonly goes on sale for $200ish which is within your budget. In fact, @zieglj01 recently got a refurbished pair from JBL’s eBay store for $150.

I’m sure he’ll be happy to share his thoughts also.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

The JBL Studio 230 is better than the Arena speakers, they are more smooth and refined over the Arena, and they have some good tight bass, plus some good dynamics for movies/tv .... now to the price, it will be about half your budget, and mine looked like new -- and the price includes shipping

Alrighty then, I think the CBM170’s are the way to go

Or perhaps he likes AMT’s and would want to check out the B1’s.

For mostly movies I would go with the Studio 230 -- but the CBM 170 would still be a decent/nice choice

The Chane A1.4's are "Out of Stock" b/c the newer and more refined A1.5's will be arriving sometime this Spring. Which is right around the corner so to speak. With respect to the list provided by the OP, my vote would easily be the Chane A1.4's. Jon Lane might have a set of B-stock A1.4's that could be had at a very good discount. Sure would NOT hurt to ask. Have not owned the A1.4's, but have the A2.4's. Need I say that I was utterly impressed?

Cheers,

Phil

If you can setup an appointment with HSU to listen to their speakers, I recommend doing so. A 2nd VTF-3 wouldn't be a bad idea either.

There really isn't a bad choice on your list. All 3 would perform quite well for HT and are well reviewed, though the A1.4 appear to be out of stock. The above mentioned Ascends would also be a solid option ang may have the edge musically.

Kef Q100 FL/FR,SL/SR, Q200C, SVS SB-2000, Denon AVR-X3400H, , Panasonic 50" Plasma, Xbox One.
Bedroom: JBL Loft 50 , Loft 20, Bic F-12, Denon AVR-S710W, PS3, 32" Insigna LED.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback and suggestions. I may pickup a pair of HSU HB-1s since they are close and demo them in my space, if I’m not liking what I hear I’ll just return them within the 30 day window. I may increase my budget and lean towards the Chane A2.4 in vertical position with tweeter rotated as L/R. Or possibly wait for the new A1.5s to come out. Seems everyone loves Chane and what they can produce and I’m sure the new model won’t dissappont.

Now for a curve ball, if I’m upping my budget I’ve always been interested in Tekton Design, they have their Mini Lore speakers for $575 delivered right now. But if I’m not digging them would have to pay return shipping and probably small restock fee. Has anyone had experience with the M-Lores or any Tekton speakers? Thanks!

Tekton owners on AVS might be even more enthusiastic than Chane owners and the pro reviews have generally been quite complimentary.

Your HSU plan sounds like a good one...Ascend Acoustics is also in your area.
