Question Opinions on speakers: standing / in ceiling / in wall (atmos)

Hey all,

I know the best answer is "listen to it", but frankly, It is hard for me to travel. So I am looking for advice on the following speaker setup:

2x Martin Logan Motion 60XT (front left and front right)
1x MartinLogan Motion 50XT (center)
2x ElctroMotionIW (Front Atmos, directly above front channel. 9' ceilings)
2X ElectroMotion IC (Rear channels)
Velodyne Subwoofer

Powered by either a SR7013 or an AVRX4500h?

If there is a better bang for the buck, please suggest something?

Thanks

If you’re looking for Bang for Buck, I’d start by wiping your list of everything but the Denon X4500.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

The reason you selected those options?

It's a VIRTUAL channel unless stated otherwise.

Going to need some more info.

What is your full room size (WxDxH)
Seating Distance from the front speakers?
How far are the outside seats from your side walls?
How far is the last row from your back wall?
Music/Movies listening -- percentage of each?
Speaker Busget?

A floorplan of your room with seating would be very helpful -- even if it's hand-drawn.

Nothing wrong with the brands chosen other than they are premium priced brands not known for "bang for buck" unless they are being discounted.

Also, rear in ceilings when trying to do 5.1.2 Atmos is a no no; the 5 bed layer speakers should be less than half way up the wall while, ideally, that Atmos speakers, (above and just in front of the main seating area), should be in the ceiling.

I currently own Martin Logan speakers in my secondary room and have a Velodyne DD15 in my main home theater so I'm not a basher of the brands.

I paid about half list price for the Martin Logans and about 30 percent of list price for the Velodyne.

If I had to pay full price I would have bought a Rhythmik subwoofer instead of the Velodyne and likely Q Acoustics stand mounters instead of the Martin Logans.

I am OK with the prices quoted, but was wondering if there is better that I can get for the same price.

Ah this concerns me. My back wall is stone, and cannot easily mount speakers inside. I already have in ceiling rear speaker. The front wall (screen) has high in-wall speakers above the screen.

Would you suggest avoiding atmos all together in this setup? What makes it a no-no?

Thanks!

If you are in the States there are many options, especially on the subwoofer side.

Here' is the Dolby setup guide for 5.1.2 where that is discussed; not following that protocol negates the advantages of Atmos so might as well stick to 5.1.

Hey folks! Sorry for the delay (as I mentioned I don't move that well!)
  • The room is 23 feet by 17 feet.
  • The wall to the left of the screen goes back 9 feet. The remaining 14 feet is an opening to the dining room.
  • The seats are currently 12 feet back from the TV, but that is moveable.
  • The speakers in the wall over the TV are not in use.
  • Notice the speakers in the second photo by the stone wall. These are currently rear channel.
  • mounting wall speakers on the stone would not be very good...

Questions:

1) Can I use the existing speakers over the TV as Atmos?
2) If #1 is no, can I use the in ceiling speakers by the back wall as Atmos?
3) If #2 is also no, sounds like I need to move those speakers forward to be over the seats. What would the best way to get speakers down to ear level with that stone wall?

Really appreciate the support guys!

The front L/R speakers might could be used as front height channel speakers. The rear ceiling speakers aren't perfect, but could probably pass for rear atmos speakers in a X.1.4 setup. Are you thinking about using floorstanding or bookshelf speakers for surrounds?

7.1.4 Theater Room (In Progress): JVC-RS46U, Silver Ticket AT 2.35:1 142”, Onkyo RZ830, Anthem PVA-7, Panasonic DBT-110, JBL Studio 270’s, 4 - 15" DIY Sealed Subs

3.1 Living Room: Samsung 64” F8500 Plasma, Anthem MRX 300, Dynaudio Audience 52’s, Dynaudio Audience 122C, NHT SubOne

Just use a pair of bookshelf speakers on stands, in the rear corners, for your surrounds. The front in-wall speakers and rear in-ceiling speakers could provide some semblance of an Atmos .4 system. Not exactly to spec, with that layout, but having the bed speakers near ear level will give you a huge boost in sound quality, so anything else you can eke out of the previous speakers is just gravy.

Is it worth getting the 2 rear in-ceiling speakers moved forward over the chairs for atmos?

Is it worth getting 2 new in ceiling speakers for front atmos? Or will the walls be good enough?
