This thread is about a three way speaker and discussing how it would have been nice if you could turn the driver in the center speaker to use as a non Atmos LCR.

So in that regard the image presented doesn't address that.

It would have been nice if that speaker had been designed to do that but it was not.

i want to order these speakers so bad. i live an hour away but i dont think they offer free returns on monolith products in case i dont like them. theyre more strict on monolith products i guess.

*ok i see its free 2 business day shipping and monoprice return policy says 30 days from date of delivery, including iiip products. but i dont see if monolith products are included

i could drive the speakers back if i dont like them instead of paying for return shipping.

Even if they look good, if you CAN place speakers on or in the ceiling as overheads, or even up high on the walls (sides or front/back) at the ceiling juncture as heights... that's the way to go. Enabled, up-firing speakers are a last resort. The others I mentioned will give you a truer sensation of actual discrete 3D surround.

That's why I still recommend that Monoprice have less expensive THX models without the upfiring module as an option with separate satellite speakers for overheads as I mentioned a few posts back.

They wouldn't be that much cheaper. I would look at it as you are getting a feature for FREE.

A free top driver and grill that will never be used...kind of like an old Mercedes Benz hood ornament. 😉

Without hearing them how would one quantify the upfiring speakers relative to other upfiring options? How are these better?

I could be wrong but the angle of the upfiring speakers seems less than others, are there specific placement recommendations?

MonolithGuy,

Any plans to add a floorstander to this line?

Perhaps also with an additional 6.5" driver or 2, larger internal volume (but maintaining the sealed cabinet, I like that for sub integration), etc., for increased power handling, lower bass extension, higher sensitivity, etc.?

Just personal opinion...I would rather have floorstanders for L/R vs. standmounts, due to stability, aesthetics, and the potential audio benefits mentioned above.

I do realize that floorstanders could add shipping cost and damage concerns though.

These are licensed by Dolby, so they meet their spec for angle and performance. I feel they over perform at their price point, but I am a pretty biased observer.

I am jumping in today.
I just ordered a pair of L/R and 3 centers. My rear channels require a horizontal speaker and I am already using Monoprice ceiling speakers for rear Atmos.

I am picking up the package at the store on Friday. Super excited.

MrMonolithGuy, if you have any thoughts or tricks that I should be aware of when setting up to my receiver, I'd love the advice.
I am using a Yamaha Advantage RX-A2060 receiver. If you know specific settings that I should be aware of, I am all ears.

I am replacing some HSU Research HC-1 speaker set up I used for all 5 speakers.
I can't wait to A/B test them.

They already do. Just place them on top of a 15" monolith. The tweeters are at ear height just like George Lucas intended.

Picked up 3 of the center channels and 2 of the atmos L/R speakers. I already had rear Atmos speakers in place. I got it all installed and adjusted/tuned (for now). Connected to a Advantage Yamaha RX-A2060. I am using a 5.2.4 set up. I kept the two HSU subs in this room. I wanted to move my previous HSU HC-1 speakers elsewhere in my house.

I ran through a couple Atmos 4K discs and some 5.1 audio DVDs and even some normal audio CDs.

My personal benchmark is the Beatles LOVE 5.1 DVD Audio disc. I have heard this disc on very high end set ups playing the first two tracks and it gave me goose bumps. My HSU set up never got there. The first song is open and airy, but the transition to track two is rough and my previous set ups muddied the transition and the following vocals never popped. To my happiness and glee, the Monoprice speakers nailed it. I actually got goose bumps. My wife laughed her ass off. She humors me and my obsessions.

Honestly, I carefully unpacked these speakers because I kinda assumed they weren't going to be much better than what I had, I was preparing for having to re-package them back up and return them. But I will be throwing the boxes out today. I am keeping these. The opening action seq. in Deadpool 4K disc has so much chaos going on in the audio, from the opening song to the massive car pile up. It was a different experience with this set up. For me at least. I had a big ass smile on my face. This is what I was hoping for.

I am sure many of you have much more extreme benchmarks and tests. For me, I have used the Deadpool intro and Beatles DVD so many times, I knew instantly that this is what I was missing from my previous set ups. I am very happy.

Before pulling the trigger, I went over to the Magnolia sections of my local Best Buy to see what they had set up in the demo rooms. They were very honest and said they didn't have anything too crazy. The employee and I goofed off a bit listening to what they did have. I didn't love anything I heard. I am very happy to know that I got all 5 of these speakers for the cost of one B&W tower they had at Best Buy.

Another surprise was the packaging. Of course thick beefy boxes. The speakers were floating in foam, snug as can be. They were individually wrapped in these nice soft fabric bags knotted at the top. it was like opening a gift. Maybe all bookshelf speakers come like this, but I was impressed. It was fun to open each of the 5 boxes. It was all part of the excitement.

I am excited to hear from others that try these out.

airdino23, nice to hear such great impressions from an early purchaser.

These speakers definitely have my interest. There aren't that many speaker companies that make consumer THX certified speakers (M&K and Atlantic Technology come to mind). This Monoprice line is the lowest cost line of THX Ultra speakers that I'm aware of.

Curious about the design/engineering pedigree of these - like were they designed by a known name in the THX consumer speaker market? Seems like the designer would have needed to have experience with the THX Ultra certification criteria going into to the design phase.

ive had mini towers and center for a while and so far very happy. didnt like spending $1500 on 3 speakers though
0 sibilance and the center is very clear with dialogue. music sounds great with a sub. def needs a sub.
curious what you set your atmos crossover at? boxes didnt come with a manual just a thx card i think

I would almost bet money that they were made by Triad.

curious what you set your atmos crossover at? boxes didnt come with a manual just a thx card i think
mariogonzalezzz: First I had to figure out how to set my receiver up for 4 ohm speakers. For my Yamaha, you have to hold down a button while starting it back up to access the menu.
Since the speakers are THX certified, I looked up their spec. I found that they suggest 80hz.
I have always heard to set the speakers as "small", but I liked them better when I set them to large, except the Atmos up firing speaker.

If someone who knows way better, I would love to gain some knowledge. I am not a pro at this.

80 Hz and small seems about right. They don't play with authority at lower octaves.

Listen up, studios! Dolby Atmos Lite™ print-outs must stop!!

Nope, they aren't made by Triad. These were engineered from scratch based on performance targets set by me.

I have not heard them before but they sure have a lot of the triad characteristics.

Airdino, NEVER use the low impedance setting on any AVR, regardless of the nominal impedance of the speakers. I highly recommend you switch it back to (or whatever the higher setting is).

See here: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-re...l#post46041745 for an explanation, particularly the comparative output figures for the high and low impedance settings in Audioholic's measurements of the Denon.
