Focal aria 906 piano black vs dark walnut?

Hi all,

I’m looking for some opinions of speaker color for focal aria 906’s. I was leaning toward the walnut since the piano black tends to show dust and reflections but I’m not sure how well the walnut matches with my entertainment center. What do you guys think? I will be adding the matching center for whichever one I choose. My entertainment center is dark cherry.

I vote for walnut, hands down!

Have you considered wall mounting the TV and putting the center on top of the cabinet? It would sound much better in the open than confined in that cubby hole.

Another vote for the Walnut! Man I love those stands. Looks very impressive. Lucky you. Feel free to snap a few more pics. We all love speaker porn! Congrats on the 906's! Enjoy! What are you powering them with? Just curious.

Cheers,

Phil

Thanks for the input! I will probably eventual wall mount the TV, but I’m probably going to be moving in the next 4 months so I’m going to be holding off until I figure that out. I agree the center should sound much better on top, but surprisingly it doesn’t sound too bad in the cabinet. The couch is only 7 feet away though so I don’t really have to get the center very loud either.

Thanks! They actually had a 50% off deal off the stands if you bought the bookshelfs at the same time 🙂 I’m powering these with a denon AVR-x3500.

That is a good deal. So, how do they sound? I bet fantastic is an understatement, eh? Very interested in the 906's myself as the inverted dome tweeter fascinates me. Lucky you!

They sound awesome. I tried out a few speakers including some paradigm monitor towers and some svs ultra bookshelfs and I liked these the best by quite a bit (at least for my smaller room and setup). They have a good amount of low end, imaging is great, and seems to have a well balanced sound for most music including rock. They do really well with movies too! Only thing I. The only thing I noticed as a negative sound wise was in a few red hot chili pepper songs cymbals became kind of overpowering, but that was only a couple songs. All the pros of the speakers far outweighed that issue to me though.

Thanks for the insights. I have owned the SVS Ultra bookshelf speakers and know how good they are. It sounds like you feel as though the Aria 906's are on another level. Acc4Less has them B-stock for around $1K. Sometime in the future I may just have to give them a try. BTW, I love the RHCP. Their Californication CD is recorded really hot. Much more so than most all of my other CD's. That may explain why on a few songs things got a bit too hot, no?

The chili peppers are one of my favorite bands! I think I actually noticed it on “by the way” on the track “don’t forget me”. I think it was the splash cymbals that were coming through and sounding kind of forward at peak parts of the song. It seemed fairly noticeable, but maybe that will go away after breaking in the speakers more. Still not a big enough issue to make me pick something else. I did like the ultras too and thought they were a good value for the price point. I felt the return you get for paying a little more for the arias provided a justified increase in price for increase in sound quality. The dark walnut arias have been on sale at the same price as the ultras though for a while now so I would personally definitely chose the arias over the ultras at the same price point. The ultras really seemed to shine with more electronic and bass heavy music to me which is the category of music I listen to the least.

@suckmykiss81 thanks for the info. Will keep all of this in mind. I am more of a rocker myself. It sounds like the 906's would be a good fit for my needs. Much appreciated.

Note the listening window of the 906 and the frequency response of cymbals.

No problem! Good luck on your decision. Unless I’m missing it I haven’t seen a lot of talk on the 906’s on AVS so it’s good to get some discussion going!

Thanks for the charts! That is helpful although must I admit I don’t fully understand frequency charts. I’ve got more to learn on that front. I’m 31 just for reference. I do tend to have picky ears and lean towards the OCD side so I would say there is a good chance that things that might seem like an issue to me could be a complete non issue to most. I’ve also been a musician for a long time and tend to pick music apart. I also think the cymbal issue I was noticing might have been part of an issue with the recording and the somewhat revealing nature of the speakers. I’m still pretty new into good speakers though so that’s my best guess.

I agree 100%! Love the Walnut. If I ever get around to getting a set of the 906's, then they will most certainly be in Walnut! Saving up as we speak. Just got a good ways to go first....LOL!!!!

Maybe listen to cymbal sounds on well produced albums by Steely Dan?

As you say, could be the production or a particular sensitivity in your hearing.

I'm twice your age so no question you hear far more higher frequencies than I do!

The listening window chart for those Focals doesn't show a built in emphasis in the cymbal frequency response but, again, you might have higher sensitivity in that area than many.

Yeah Steely Dan would probably have some good music to help benchmark the speakers by! I did listen to a good amount of other well recorded music that didn’t seem to have any issues as well. For some reason, on the couple songs I noticed it on, it happened when the crash cymbals were really being pounded on that they kind of stood out in a way that seemed unbalanced and kind of sharp/distracting. Again nothing that would make me chose a different speaker at this point, but something I noticed.

It’s around 1:33 on this song if you care to check it out (not counting on YouTube for good sound quality)

Curious what size rooms people are using their Aria Focal 906s in? The focal recommendations of 8 foot listening distance and room size of 160 sq ft seemed rather small. My listening distance will be more like 12-14 feet and I want to make sure these would still work. Thoughts anyone?

Hi Todd,

You may have some luck asking in the Focal owners thread. In any case, I actually just did a comparison of six speaker pairs and chose the Aria 906s. I was listening at about 10 feet and my room is about 240 sqft with lots of broadband absorption. They sounded fantastic to me.
