Infinity Interlude Speakers

I just bought a set of Infinity Interlude Speakers, specifically, 2 - IL40, 2 - IL10, 1 - IL36c and 1 - IL120S. They came from a nice, nonsmoking home and as far as I can tell they are in excellent shape except for the binding post on the IL40's and the IL10's. I called Harmon to get a set of manuals sent to me and they informed me they were an older speaker. They gave me a list Infinity service centers. I called them up concerning the binding post and they informed me due to them being discontinued, they no longer carry parts for them.

I paid $100.00 for the set, did I get hosed? I am going to try different stores to find suitable replacement binding posts. Anything else I should be looking for?

Many thanks for you input.

What is wrong with the binding posts? Can you post pics?

I'd bet that Parts Express will have something that will work.

All that for $100?

Assuming you can get everything working, $100 is a steal!

nice find , assuming you like the sound.. seems that infinity binding posts universally suck, i bought a pair of alpha books several years ago .. they were in good shape except for binding posts being broken (snapped).. never had any other brand with this issue on multiple speakers...

Those are quite good speakers, especially at that price. Agree with the previous poster, you should look for a substitute part. Cannot imagine it would be hard to change out such a basic part.

I wouldn't sell my IL36c for $100, let alone a full set of Interludes. You did great. Many new speakers don't perform as well as they do. After 15 years of continuous use they still give me chills. I hope the binding post issue is an easy fix.

I can't really tell from the pic...but assuming the binding posts are on a terminal cup, I suggest removing the terminal cup to determine the following:

1) Length and diameter of the existing binding posts.

2) Crossover to binding post connection type, for example crimped O-type or soldered.

Knowing the above should help narrow down which binding posts to buy.

I was able to remove one binding post to determine size. I was afraid it was going to be more difficult.

For some reason, your pics are not showing up well for me, but looks like it is a pretty shallow binding post, like maybe only 3/8" to 1/2" deep on the inside of the speaker?

Just curious, is the crossover board connected directly to the binding posts via spade lugs, or do wires connect the crossover to the binding posts? I've worked on speakers with both.

I'll try and post them again later.

They are a 4mm thread 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, the wire is soldered onto a lug that fits over the post with lock washer and nut to secure it all together.

The outside thread that is broken is an 8mm - 1.0 thread. A nut screws all the way down and leaves halve of the thread open in the nut. I screwed another nut onto a bolt and screwed the nut into the unoccupied threads of the nut that is screwed onto the broken post and attached the wires to that for a temporary fix until I get the binding posts in.

Ok, the sub is not working. I checked fuse, it was good, checked power it was good. I removed plate amplifier and visually checked the caps for swelling, they looked good as well, checked the power from switch to main cpu board, I had 120vac there. I guess I will look for another plate amplifier for it.

Here's the same thing for $250, which is also a good deal. Your's is a good deal too, even with the binding post and subwoofer issues. .

Now I am looking for a receiver to power these speakers. Right now they are coupled to a Technics SA-EX400.

Most people buy way more receiver then they actually need. I do too! . Check out a factory refurbished avr from Ac4l.com. Buy one for $499 or less and a 5 year extended warranty is only about $50 more. Denons are real popular around here. Marantz and Yamaha are solid choices. I prefer Pioneer Elite (pre Onkyo merger). Look for the features that you really need. But sometimes you have to move up to get that one thing you really want. Pioneer is a perfect example. I really like their Optimum Surround feature but it's only available in their top three avrs.

But any newer avr will make your head spin with all they have to offer compared to your Technics!
