What should i get ? (speakers)

I am stuck . I need 4 bookshelf speakers to complete my surround sound system.
I have a small to med size room but the speakers will be place near the walls.
I have a yamaha cs210 center speaker, yamaha 383 avr and a pioneer smk8 sub but its too boomy because of apt neighbors.

I would like to get all 4 for under $400.
Uses are mainly gaming and some tv.

I would like great sound at low volumes (again apartment life) .
I have the monoprice 5.1 set but i think it sucks it has zero mids or lows

any advice ?

Sony Core speakers ($150/pr. at BB.com) are well-rated budget speakers.

(The Dayton SUB-1000 ($120, shipped, from parts-express.com) could be an option to replace your current sub.)

-- Edit --
Re. the boominess of your current sub:
- If the sub is in a corner, try moving it out along a wall.
- A high crossover setting in the AVR (usually because of small speakers with poor extension) may also cause the sub to be boomy. Larger speakers (and a lower crossover setting) may help with that.

Very nice sounding Boston Acoustic A25's would be good in your situation. If you want to run with no sub you could get the A26's up front as they go just a bit lower with a larger 6.5" woofer.

Four of these; speakers are sealed, would have to use with sub though.

https://www.amazon.com/NHT-SuperZero.../dp/B00CKNOYWK

Or four of these that dig deeper but not deep enough to bug the neighbors so could work well with no sub with close wall placement.

If you have to place them on or close to the wall ^^^ these are your best bet within your budget. You can go with 2 Super Ones up front and 2 super Zero's for surrounds. If you can be flexible on budget, get a 3rd Super one for center for an even cohesive sound all around.

Pricing is stunningly low for such well regarded speakers.

Missed the need for close to wall so the NHT's are the best for your situation. Boston's are rear ported

It's a good thing for the OP who would be getting 5 well regarded speakers for just a $420 if he gets (highly recommend doing so) the Super one center. They'll easily outperform the Monoprice package IMO.

You guys made great recommendations. I have the Sony Core speakers and they have nice clarity, even better deal when they were on sale for $75/pr during the holidays.

NHT's SuperZero and SuperOne are also great choices. I've heard those in stores and live less than 30 minutes from NHT headquarters. Need to stop in one day for an audition.

You can get the directly from NHT, but prices are higher than Amazon. You could call them to see if they'll match the Amazon price. They will accept Paypal.

Dual 3.25" main drivers so may be volume limited compared to the NHTs.

The NHT Supercenter would be better and not that much more money.

Is there any other suggestions for a center that i could get from ebay so i can use paypal as i can't seem to find the NHT supercenter 2.1 on ebay or any other site that uses paypal.

I can wait till next month and get it on amazon but i really dont want to wait that long as i have initiated the return of the yamaha center already.

Do you think the pioneer sp-c22 or elac debut 2.0 c5.2 would be a good fit or would a NHT supercenter 2.1 be a major difference in tonal matching to the other NHT's that would make others inferior?

I know i'm going way over my budget but if thats what it takes to get good audio thats what it takes

Thank everyone for all the advice so far

If you want a killer center to go with the NHT take a look at the Emotiva C1. They take PayPal. A 3 way sealed center so will work close to a wall. You don't necessarily need to match.
https://emotiva.com/collections/loud...ts/airmotiv-c1

Another option is 1 more NHT Superone 2.1 as three identical speakers across the front is really the optimal setup. It might also work laid on its side if you don't have space to place it vertically

What would be the best then the supercenter 2.1 or another super one 2.1 for a center ?

Well i was going to go with horizontal but my only other option would be mounting the center superone above the tv on a shelf (maybe with a slight angle down) and moving the L+R superones to the side of the tv. I still have some woodwork to finish anyway.

Options are leaving them the way they are(closer to head height) or raising the center to above tv and placing all vertical.

As a note if the center is horizontal i have to raise the tv up via the unfinished wood you see in pic ...Which leaves no room behind tv to move the large pc behind tv so all fronts have to be horizontal.

If i put the center vertical on a shelf above the tv then i can lower the tv and the pc can go behind tv and i will have room the build two speaker stands beside the tv to place L+R's vertical also.

I don't mind the woodwork.

What setup would sound better ?

P.S Thanks for the NHT recommendations they sound great!!!

Well if they sound great to you horizontally then maybe just leave well enough alone.

But mounting them vertically would make the TV about 5 inches higher and it looks like that might actually be a better height for viewing?

Glad you found the speakers as good as advertised.

Enjoy.

Having all 3 speakers at the same height either vertically or horizontally would be best. I'll agree with Geoff that raising the TV 5-6 inches would provide a more ideal viewing height. You can put the center above the TV and still get good results if you've exhausted the other options.

I'm worried if i raise the tv up more with a wallmount that it might make my neck sore. My eye level is about 3 inches below the center of the screen right now.

If i do get speaker wall mounts for the center and put above the tv angled down towards me should i get 2 more mounts and raise the left and right fronts to the same height as the center ?

Sorry about all the questions .....

I would think that would work very well especially if all were vertical, on the same plane and angled down.

It would also sound good with the left/right bracketing the TV and the center just above the TV angled down.

My towers bracket the TV and the center is about 6" below the TV angled up and it sounds great.

I was going to do that but my friend had a brand new Sanus full motion wall mount so i figured i would try that and so far so good..

Thanks again for all the help.
