Looking for hi end speakers in San Jose bayarea. Need suggestion

Hi

I have problem finding a showroom in San Jose Ca. area, only ones I found is Audio High, Magnolia/Best Buy. Lots of car audio, but I have a hell of a time finding home hifi particularly 2 channel speakers.

Any suggestions? Seems like all the stores disappeared. I used to find a lot of stores around the bayarea.

Own designed power amp, own designed preamp, JM LAB Spectral 913.1 speakers, Rythmik F12SE sub.
Not hooked up: Nakamichi Stasis PA-7 power amp, Velodyne VA1210 sub, Kef Reference Series center, Kef Bookshelf speaker, Monitor Audio bookshelf speaker, Infinity rear speakers. Acurus 3X200W amp.

I believe the SF area has a lot of showrooms if you can make the drive.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

It is a problem everywhere. Good news is that speaker technology has improved significantly and most speakers from companies like Revel and KEF and others are very good.

Check out the options in Monterey/Carmel ... nice day out and speakers to hear!

It's a VIRTUAL channel unless stated otherwise.

Century Stereo in San Jose/Saratoga closed last year. About the last of the good places in SJ.

San Francisco, different story and worth the drive.

All my business goes to Audio Vision. Highly suggest you at least take the 50 min drive and check them out. They carry great brands and have many trade in gear that can be like mint for a good price if that interests you. If new, they have many great brands. You can see some of their speakers choices in the link.

You really think speakers have improved a lot in the last 10 years? I almost bought a pair of JM LAB Diva Utopia, I changed my mind because it's just too far to drive over to pick it up. I was looking at used speakers.

Nothing wrong with used speakers, speakers don't really wear out (unless they have foam surrounds which rot, and maybe after 20-30 years some capacitors might go bad).

I do believe if you compare a 10 year old speaker with today's replacement, today's will be better (IF it has not been downgraded in price). But a 5-10 year old used speaker could far exceed something new at the same or even less price. 20-30+ year old speakers did not have the design benefit of modern simulation and measurement tools.

So why the heck didn't you get those Divas? C'mon, halfway across the country is not too far to drive for something that could last you 20, 30, 40 years!

A little cold feet and 600miles to drive!!!(1200miles round trip, can't really leave them in the car and have to drive the whole 600miles in one day back home after picking up the speakers!!!). I think if seller is willing to ship, I would have paid extra $300 to ship it.

On those high end speakers, you think the new ones improves a lot. That is if I can buy the Divas for $3600, can I get a pair for say $7200( double the price) that can sound better?

I have no idea and it's not easy to shop for new ones now a days!! How do people shop for hifi now a days? You can't listen to it, how do you buy anything without actually listening to it first?

$3600! Jeez, I'll drive there! We once did 1000 miles LA to Boise in a day. Actually if covered from sight no reason the speakers can't sit overnight. As for better, hard to say. My point was more like the $3600 used probably just as good or better than new $3600 speakers. New Divas are what, $10k? But some $10k used Utopia or whatever is above that are perhaps superior. At those money levels it gets very hard to say-ALL the speakers are very very good, it comes to personal preferences and interaction with the room etc.

And I don't know how to buy stuff. I've been wanting to hear Quad towers-or even the bookshelf-but did not have luck finding any. Ya gotta go listen used, or drive a long way to a dealer, or buy unheard (yikes!) with a liberal return policy. It is definitely a problem!

The Music Room also sells gear, mostly used but some new as well I believe, I think they’re in Colorado

I sold a motorcycle to a guy who lives in San Diego and met half way so instead of an 1100 mile trip it was a 275 mile very chilly ride down and returned in my wife's car who followed me.

If buying new towers it is hard to beat Crutchfield's $75/pair return fee on towers within 60 days.

For stand mounts it is $10/box.

There are some very good deals on B stock Revel Ultima2 speakers going on right now. All dealers have access to them.

Very hard to beat the Salon2. The Ultima2 series were released in 2007. The Salon2 has not been updated because it has still has not been beaten in double blind listening tests.

It's always good to get information from Dr. Floyd Toole. His research and publications are highly regarded.
