5.1 system for 50/50 music and movies/tv

I am looking to replace a polk setup (RTI4's etc) with a bookshelf 5.1 setup. My wife has decided she wants the tv mounted to the wall above the fireplace and the Polk towers no longer fit the bill. So far I am considering ascend acoustics with mini towers (not sure if they can be wall mounted), QAcoustics 3020i, RSL, and Infinity Reference. Any others I should consider? We use the system for 50/50 Music/Movies and TV. I'd like to stay in the $1000 to 1500 range.

Thanks,

For 50/50 usage, Ascend would give you the best of both worlds. If you like the Polk sound, the S20's may worth a look. If you're flush mounting to the wall, NHT Superone with it's seal cabinet would be suitable.

Infinity Reference would be a nice option

HTD Level Three speakers can be wall mounted

Use the Level Two for surrounds

The Infinity Reference line just went off sale, so that's off the table right now. Am I understanding correctly that you want to wall mount the front speakers? If that's the case the QA 3020i wouldn't be a very good option.

you certainly dont want to wall mount towers or mini towers whatever that means.

The SuperOne is a sealed design so you don't have to worry about a rear ported speaker against the wall. And they look good with their glossy black finish, wife friendly.

Doesn't have to be full wall mount, brackets would be fine too.

Mini-tower is Ascend's acoustics term, specifically the CMT-340.

Brackets/arms would be fine too. They do not have be speaker back directly mounted to the wall.

Ascend recommends these brackets at Amazon.

Since this is not an, "I need to buy today," situation. I can wait and see if anything goes on sale for 4th of July.

Why aren't the Q3020i a good option? They are listed as wall mountable.

Thanks,

Thanks,

You can mount pretty much any speaker to a wall within a reasonable size and the right mounting bracket. The 3020i is really made as a bookshelf speaker, or more so as a stand mounted speaker. QA even has specific stands for these. They do also offer a wall bracket, so it is an option. However, these speakers area bit odd for wall mounting due to the cabinet design being rather deep and not as tall as similar speakers. Using these as wall mounted left/right speakers, the rear ported design will also be a draw-back. If they were wall mounted as surrounds it would be less significant being rear ported. They do include a port plug, but this will change the lower frequency range of the speaker.

I demoed the Elac Debut 6.5 and Bowers and Wilkins 600 Series. The Elac's seemed to have very good balanced sound and were similar to the BW600, but the BW 600 seemed like their treble boost may get fatiguing. I also see that JBL studio 590 model is on sale, for a good price, should I consider those?

Thanks,

I have Polk RTI Towers right now and the Elac bookshelfs put them to shame, so I am a bit hesitant on going polk again.

Perhaps post your concern in the Polk thread and see what others have to say to compare your RTi's to the LSiM. LSiM is their top of the line and are very nice for music or HT.

If you liked the Elac 2.0 over your current Polks, you should definitely consider them, though it maybe a good idea to go listen to other brands as well.

All these from Amazon for under $1,000

NHT C-3 front left and right $330 each
NHT SuperOne surrounds $100 each
NHT SuperCenter $145

Here is a review of the C-3. I have an earlier version of these and they are terrific.

Add a sub for $500 (many good ones at this price) and you will have a system that will last for years of pleasure.

Oppo UDP-203, Dish VIP722
NHT C4 front speakers, NHT C LCR center spkr
NHT Classic 3 surrounds

If you liked the Elacs keep your powder dry as they have gone on severe discount the last 6 months twice.

Many happy Elac owners and as you've heard them a safe bet.

Would allow for a better subwoofer purchase as even at full msrp they are quite a bargain.

Any recommendations of bookshelf or wall mountable that sound good at lower volumes? My wife wants something that will sound good at low and high volumes. I have a Yamaha TSR-7810 to power them. Wife wants the towers gone, and is willing to spend up to $1000 on just the 5 speakers (i'll buy the sub separately). The Ascend CMT340 peaks my interest, but I'm not sure they would do well a t lower volumes.

Ascend is amazing at any volume. While my experience with the 340 is limited - just a short session in their listening room - it left me impressed.

How about 5.1 for $1199?

Free returns if not happy.

Or 5.0 for $900.

I need to read through your entire thread, but I'll direct you here for now. Chane A2.4s would fit the bill nicely, and they are affordable.

7.2 system: Chane A2.4 center, Chane A5.4s L/R, Chane A1.5s surround, Kenwood KS-505HTs rear
Subs: Klipsch R-120SW and Kenwood SW-35HT (8"); HiVi Swan X3 monitors (laptop)
Onkyo TX-RZ620, Samsung 4k 43NU7100, PS3, Nintendo Switch, Sennheiser HDR130 headphones
Protection: Tripp Lite Isobar 8 Ultra; VCE SP250-2P
And don't forget - JVC HR-S3900U Super VHS - the last working VCR in America??
