Best Center Speaker under $500

What are some of the best center speakers for under $500?

I am more interested in getting crisper dialogues in movies...so getting the best center speakers makes sense, right?
Oh btw, I will be using the HT for mostly movies - No games / songs.

Klipsch RP-250C @ $250 (or $140 when they usually have promotions)

JBL Studio 520 @ $150 (Reg price $350)

Definitive Technology Procenter 1000 @ $200

MartinLogan Motion 8 @ $280

Any others that you think are great center speakers?

The Klipsch one out of those.

But it also depends on what your mains are...

It need not be amongst the ones I listed...those are the ones I have heard about

Also, I haven't gotten my mains yet, so that is open too if you can suggest both the mains as well as the center.

Whatever mains that go well with the best center under $500. I am open to all options.

So far, all I got is the Onkyo TX-RZ830 AVR, Epson 5040UB, Monolith 12" Sub.

For a theater situation you can’t go wrong with the Klipsch RP.

I’d be looking at the newer updated line though.

Of course the old line is being discounted as you’ve seen.

Cannot recommend DefTech, ML, or that JBL Center. All too small woofers. Produces tinny sound, and won’t last long when pushed hard.

The best center channel is exactly identical to your left and right speakers.

3 competent matching speakers across the front soundstage is the proper way to design your setup. (I'd argue all speakers should match - from my experiences - but that's not as important as having your front three match IMO.)

I agree that the Klipsch is probably the strongest in your list. I personally am a JBL person. I have the JBL S Center and upgraded to the JBL LC2 center. The LC2 is a much larger center and that is important for dialogue and such. Many people just get another speaker as their mains for their center.

JBL has announced the discontinuation of the Studio 5 series and the introduction of the Sutdio 6 series. The center channel looks better than anything on your list, but no one knows the pricing yet.

Any center channel speaker can only take you so far (dialogue intelligibility). What you really need is a receiver that has dialogue enhancement circuit. The top 2 Denon (X6500 and X8500) have it.

I have heard that many times (3 identical speakers). But if the use case is 100 percent 5.1 audio and most sound comes from the center channel in 5.1 audio, wouldn't it make more sense to buy the best center channel speaker and then much cheaper left and right and surround speakers?

Not arguing, just trying to learn.

you don't necessarily need a center speaker .. you could get a pair of bookshelf speakers and a single of the same type for the center(if you have room vertically)...klipsch is a good place to start .. jbl , emotiva , martin logan and polk s series or lsim series as well

I understand your point, and you are correct that skimping on a center channel is NOT a good idea. But part of what make the 5.1, 7.1, etc sound field work is voice matched speakers, especially across the front.

Years ago I had a Dolby Pro-Logic setup with Sony 3-way 12" front ported front left/right an Infinity center with some Radio Shack surrounds.... I thought it sounded fine.

Later I got a pair of jbl s38iis (front left/ right) and a jbl s center.... WOW what a difference! The entire front stage became seamless because my front speakers were voice matched.

I now have JBL Studio L series all the way around and the LC2 center is a big sucker.

The Klipsch RP-250C. And even better than the RP-250C (5 1/4 inch woofers) is the discontinued RC-62II (6 1/2 inch woofers) at a better bargain https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-RC-62.../dp/B0040QS8R2

You are 100% correct. The center channel gets 80% of a movies soundtrack. Yes, purchase the best center channel speaker you can afford, then buy their matching L/R speakers. If not identical, then buy from the same manufacturer and series.

The "best" will vary depending on who you ask. If you listen at reference level, Klipsch RP, HSU HC-1 MK2 , Chane A2.4. If you don't need theater volume, Emotiva T1 & C1 would be an excellent value/ performance option.

Your “absolutely correct” affirmation would indicate you have hard objective facts on the 80% figure and lots of subjective experience listening to both types of setups (identical LCR vs non-identical LCR to back up your unwavering confirmation.

I actually mis-read the OP’s statement. I disagree on purchasing “cheap” L/R speakers. I stand by my recommendation to purchase the best center channel you can afford, but, then I would also recommend purchasing two more of the same for L/R. I would also suggest your speakers be designed to be oriented vertically; including the center.

Agreed. For the OP, best strategy will be to buy the best center and then voice match it to cheaper left, right, and surround speakers from the same brand.

For example buy R2C or Q200c from Kef as the center speaker. And then get Kef Q100 or Q150 as surround and left and right speakers. They are all sonically matched but R2C and Q200 are much better quality speakers.

what is missing from this conversation is driver layout and/or type of driver... ultimately, what works/sounds best to your ears, only you can tell. most traditional center are a MTM (horizontal ) layout. many of the higher end centers use a Wt/mW ( where the tweeter is above the mid-range). some are a standard tweeter over woofer laid on it side.

other: Co Axial ( highly regarded for off axis response)

other considerations: woofer size , ported v sealed, aesthetic and space considerations I would try to get a larger woofer v 4" or smaller.

there many quality speakers in all designs, many in your price range -

MTM : Ascend acoustics cmt 340 SE, RSL CG23, or the new CG 25

wt/mw : emotiva C1 ( C2 is currently unavailable)
